The Sideshow (D8N)
« on: September 16, 2007, 08:30:53 PM »

This artist is an Iraq War vet, and had a show at the Convention Center gallery.  This was more of an installation for him, and first use of a lot of color, compared to the B/W woodcut/stencil things he had on show at the Convention Center.   Reminds me of the political art of the Weimar Republic.

The photo tree was by Kitty, who is a waitress at the OE, but does a lot of photography, too.  She did some band/music photography at last years Dayton Music Fest:

I liked this one.  Lots going on here.

I dislike rap and avoid it if possible, so this was my first live rap act.  This guy was rapping about life in Dayton, and also about Fela.  More of a political/social angle to his rhymes (think Gil-Scott Heron or the Last Poets) compared to conventional rap.

Brokendayton.com….this is a WSU BFA grad, who does photography as well as sculpture and painting..

(they seem a bit like HATCH up in Detroit…more of a “street”/”edge”/”urban” thing going on with them, compared to some of the other artists in town)

Nice!
I love it when people come into a message board and immediately begin to mix it up.  I mean, Jesus, at least say hello!  Do you walk into a room full of strangers, pick a random woman, and tell her she's fat? - buildingcincinnati

yeah, actually it was!

What was interesting about this was that seemed to be a fairly unpretentious and "open" vibe going on here as well as the aspect of social comment in some of the art.  I've been to art events in Louisville where there is a sort of unspoken self-conscious hipster "we're cool and your not feel or attitude…one didn't see much "attitude" at all here, and the crowd wasn't all this 20somethingish demographic, though I think most of the artists are younger.  It was all very positive!

Having lived here for nearly 20 years now, what's been interesting is watching the visual arts in Dayton become more and more visible, though there was performance art here too.
