Atlanta Doc #3: Midtown
« on: August 29, 2007, 08:35:25 PM »
Midtown is probably my favorite part of Atlanta.  Cool vibe, lots of young people, one of the most walkable areas in the city (that I've experienced), has some good bars/clubs, unique shopping/restaurants...and is just overall a cool place.  I'll spare you the lengthy dialog and just get to the pics.

Great pics!

The first building is lacking something, but the rest of the area looks very appealing!

Someone was right in the heart of "gay land".  Did you go inot BullDogs?  I pray you didn't.

Those metropolis apartments have got to be the smallest and most plain apartments.

I've always loved that apartment building on 9 or 10 & cypress across from the bank.

That street has come along way.  It was worse than pre 83 prospect avenue in downtown cleveland.

^Funny you mention that...I picked up on it my second day down here.  I was driving down Peachtree and started seeing businesses with rainbow flags and the like.  It was especially noticeable since their was a big gay pride parade that weekend.  I don't know if that is why the neighborhood is neat/cool, but in any case...it's my favorite place thus far.

between North ave and 10 Street and Peachtree/Piedmont.  Is the gay stroll.

However, Peachtree, Cypress, Piedmont don't have many pedestrians, and you would think they would.  Even the streets bordering the park see little pedestrian activity.  Its weird.

Well that area is very much walkable, but it is essentially surrounded by areas that are not.  So if you don't live within that area, that is walkable, then you'll probably drive.  Also what really hurts Atlanta all over is that its urban core has developed in a linear fashion along Peachtree.

In other cities you could walk around a 8 square block area and have tons of stuff (in most people's sub-conscience they would rather walk 10 blocks scattered around in a cluster than 10 linear blocks)...in Atlanta there are pockets of that, but you typically are oriented along a long corridor (Peachtree in Buckhead, Midtown & Downtown...and the Virginia Highlands area) which can be quite intimidating to traverse as a pedestrian.

I totally agree with that!  Just make sure you're not out on the streets in that 'nabe at night. It's kinda iffy.

Cool neighborhood, but it looks a little sleepy.  Am I to take it from the preceding conversation that is about all the pedestrian activity the area sees, or was this an off time?

It was about 6:30pm on Monday night when I took those pics.  I'm normally not a big people shot photographer, and to be fair, there were a good amount of people out and about.  Now for the amount of density and shear number of people living in the area...you could expect more.  But overall it's pretty decent.

Which ones were Peachtree?  Shots 6 through the end?  It actually seems like a pleasant urban neighborhood main st.

1-4 are on Peachtree Place...5-15 are on Peachtree (the main drag)...16 is on 6th (I think)...and the rest are on Juniper right around 6th.

It's definitely better than I would have expected from Atlanta.  #'s 9 and 13 are very nice looking streetscapes, like something out of the Pacific Northwest.

Well as of yet, I haven't had much positive to say about the ATL...and to be honest there are some nice things.  I thought I should include some good stuff about Atlanta as well.  There will be both more positive and negative stuff coming soon.  You can probably expect some more Midtown, a little Virginia Highlands and some other random stuff that I don't know yet.  I plan on packing in some photos before I leave in about 2 weeks.

BTW, I did a brief write up on a few of my major observations of Atlanta on UrbanCincy.

I love it when people come into a message board and immediately begin to mix it up.  I mean, Jesus, at least say hello!  Do you walk into a room full of strangers, pick a random woman, and tell her she's fat? - buildingcincinnati

11/12 has to be the most bland building I've ever seen.  Some of those bars look cool though.
