I'm embarrassed to say that I've never actually been to Sterle's. Last time I was in Cleveland I drove down St. Clair and thought how great it would be if they developed the area around 55th. Glad to see there is some movement on that.

Using hammers and muscle, a half dozen hard-hatted architecture students from Kent State University College of Architecture and Environmental Design tore rotting plaster and lathe from the studs of a vacant, 82-year-old Cleveland house as part of a gut-and-remodel job.

It was the second Friday in June and members of a new KSU summer class in construction were digging into the dirty work of making architecture happen.

They're also exploring ways in which at least some houses abandoned in Cleveland after the mortgage foreclosure crisis and recession in the last decade could be re-used instead of demolished.

Over a two-month period, two groups of a half-dozen students each will get credit for remodeling a vacant but structurally sound two-story brick house in the St. Clair Superior neighborhood on the east side of East 67th Street, just south of St. Clair Avenue.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland's first creative reuse center opens for regular hours this week, after a special weekend launch. Fittingly, the Upcycle Parts Shop is in one of Cleveland's most exciting neighborhoods in transition.

"I have been a reuse artist for a couple years and have gotten connected with a broader community of upcyclers," says director Nicole McGee. "It's about caring about the environment and wanting to be creative.

"I was trying to come up ways to bring this to Cleveland, and that's when (Executive Director of St. Clair Superior Development Corporation) Michael Fleming and I talked about doing this in St. Clair Superior."

At Upcycle, you'll find: a selection of upcycled parts for low cost to transform into art; workshops, open studios and craft parties.

Business are encouraged to donate their unwanted scraps and waste materials in the cause of art.

"This is really exciting," says McGee. "The dream is coming true."

The Upcycle Parts Shop is a part of St. Clair Superior Community Development Organization's Upcycle St. Clair project. Upcycle St. Clair was funded in June 2013 by the ArtPlace America funding collaboration

Hours: Noon – 6 p.m. Wednesday and Friday, noon – 8 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday.

This didn't get posted back in September, but there's a new bi-weekly market event in St. Clair Superior, at the site of the future Hub 55 Project.  Two market events have already been held, with another this Thursday.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Rick Semersky and the St. Clair Superior Development Corporation's dreams for East 55th Street are one step closer to reality.

Semersky, owner of Sterle's Country House and the upcoming Hub 55 market-brewery-restaurant complex, and Michael Fleming, executive director of the St. Clair Superior Development Corporation, revealed plans Monday for the first concrete step towards Hub 55's opening. A bi-weekly pop-up food and artisan market will begin Thursday, October 9.

More than a dozen vendors are already lined up for the market, which will launch at Sterle's (1401 East 55th Street) and move next door to its permanent home at Hub 55 (1361 East 55th Street) in January.

"The Thursday market is a way to tie the whole Hub area to the future market that will be there," says Fleming. "We want to start to get people thinking about the Hub as a place where people can get fresh produce and food and locally made goods."

"There will be a food focus, but also hyperlocal focus to it. This is a very small beginning we can ramp up over winter as the completion of the Hub gets closer."

The St. Clair Market, as it will be named, will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. every other Thursday.

...and out today is more information on Hub 55, specifically who has been tapped to be head brewer for the brewery going in.  It's Joel Wagner, Pub Brewer at Great Lakes.  This should bring instant excitement to this project and to this growing area of the city!

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Hub 55/Sterle's Country House owner Rick Semersky looked nationwide for a brewer for his developing Goldhorn Brewery – but he found who he was looking for right here in Cleveland.

On Monday, Semersky announced that Joel Warger has been named Head Brewer for the 10,000-square-foot brewery with a 100-seat tap room slated to open in 2015 at Hub 55 on East 55th Street. Warger is currently the Pub Brewer at Great Lakes Brewing Co., where he has worked for 14 years.

"I couldn't have found a better Head Brewer for Goldhorn then Joel," says Semersky. Warger will also be a minority owner in Goldhorn, with a hand in every aspect of the brewery and restaurant as well as the beermaking.

"I was looking everywhere, I had talked to people outside the Cleveland market, but Joel is just a great find. He's very excited about what we're doing for the neighborhood. We're on the same page for the brewery and the restaurant and he's very passionate about area."

"The styles of beer and the overall concept for the brewery along with Goldhorn's presence in the St. Clair-Superior Neighborhood, made it an easy decision to sign on," says Warger.

Goldhorn Brewery is slated to open next spring, with plans to brew 500-600 barrels in his first year.

The brewery will concentrate on traditional European-style beers, says Semersky - lagers, pilsners, ales and Hefeweizens.

Here in Cleveland, our thriftiness is a large part of our charm.
 
It seems that at some point in the gradual course of our renaissance as a city, we made the collective decision to embrace the term “Rust Belt.” It doesn’t seem long ago that the phrase was thrown around to categorize us as a postindustrial city with a chip on its shoulder.
 
Now, it almost comes as a relief that “Rust Belt” is ingrained into the titles of dozens of thriving, local, independent businesses as a term of endearment and a testament to our authenticity.
 
Although thriftiness is one of our defining characteristics, a little over a year ago, Cleveland lacked a monthly flea market that unifies handmade items with vintage vendors, upcycled goods, antiques and local food.

The federal government is helping to create an oasis amid one of Cleveland's food deserts -- an area with a shortage of fruits and vegetables because of a lack of vendors to provide them.

The Department of Health and Human Services has extended an $800,000 grant to the St. Clair Superior Development Corp. to help establish a new farmer's market for locally grown produce, an affirmation of the private dollars already invested toward that end.

The market will go inside Hub 55, a complex being developed on East 55th Street, just south of St. Clair Avenue, by Sterle's Country House owner Rick Semersky.

Wow!! This is a significant investment in the neighborhood and an amazing re-use of an amazing building! I'm mildly disappointed they are demolishing more than the rear half of the existing building. But I think they are making up for it with the rest of the project's investment.

It's a Cristo Rey Catholic high school, currently on Lausche Ave. The school has been around for 10 years or so

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The wheels of progress continue to move forward at the ambitious Hub 55 project on East 55th Street. Developer Rick Semersky, owner of 60-year-old Sterle's Country House and the visionary behind the Hub, has hired a new GM and executive chef. Jeff Jarrett, formerly executive chef of Amp 150, will head up Café 55, The Taproom at Goldhorn Brewery and the soon-to-be-announced restaurant that will occupy the historic former LakeShore Banking and Trust space at the corner of East 55th Street and St. Clair Avenue.

"With Hub 55 coming online, I knew that I needed someone to join me in making sure that our growing portfolio of restaurants stays true to themselves while also working together to be successful," says Semersky.

"After meeting with Jeff and sharing my vision for St. Clair, knowing of his past successes and his love for the city, I knew I had found the right person."

"It's a fantastic opportunity and a logical next step in my career," says Jarrett. "Rick offered me the opportunity to do so much more than just running another restaurant. His passion is addictive, and I'm excited about being a part of that."

Jarrett will also be overseeing Sterle's restaurant, food truck and catering business.

I brought this over from the Midtown page since it's in the St. Clair Superior neighborhood.  Cafe 55's opening is the 2nd retail offering at Hub 55, a game changing mixed use development for the St. Clair neighborhood and part of the larger redevelopment of East 55th and St. Clair.  Stay tuned throughout the year...

I wish these folks a lot of success. A renaissance in East 55th could really mean a lot to the city:

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Kresge Foundation of Troy, Michigan, has made a $735,000 grant to the St. Clair-Superior neighborhood to show how redevelopment efforts involving art and food can benefit long-term residents, not just newcomers.

The grant, described in detail exclusively to The Plain Dealer by the nonprofit St. Clair Superior Development Corp., will support "Ag|re|culture."

The initiative is part of a revival of interest in equity planning, a practice aimed at making sure everyone benefits from urban redevelopment, not just those who already enjoy advantages.

In St. Clair-Superior, the focus is on helping low- and moderate-income residents partake directly in the the neighborhood's cultural projects and local food movement by supporting cooking clubs, neighborhood ambassadors, gardening mentorships and other programs.

Café 55 part of larger project to create new core in St. Clair Superior neighborhood

On a recent Thursday during the lunch hour, the newly-opened Café 55 in the  felt like a bit like a cafeteria for all of Cleveland.

Downtown office workers and neighborhood employees chatted at shared tables in the bright, airy room, which has concrete floors, large windows looking out over East 55th Street and high ceilings with exposed ductwork.

Diners munched on build-your-own lunch bowls that were made to order with fresh ingredients, sandwiches and salads, clearly enjoying the new healthy, fast-casual restaurant. Part of the appeal of the setting is that it is at once accessible and urban yet removed from the hubbub of downtown.

Seeing Café 55 bustling with customers makes Rick Semersky, the 42-year-old owner of the café and CEO of VIP Restoration, very happy.

“We knew we had a great concept, but were people going to show up?” he said. “Our lunch business has been fantastic, even better than we expected.”

Events are helping fuel the resurgence of the St. Clair-Superior neighborhood

Night Market organizers expected about 2,500 people to show up and celebrate Asian heritage at the inaugural open-air event held in June in Cleveland’s AsiaTown and Campus District neighborhoods.

Actual attendance doubled those projections. Subsequent social media photos showing the bright-colored costumes, crowds swarming ruby red tents and vendors dishing up xiaochi (small eats), all beneath strings of white lights, enticed event followers. Attendance surged to 11,000 in July, and then to 15,000 in August.

“We were pretty surprised,” event organizer Brendan Trewella said. “I needed a couple people’s hands to count how many times I heard, ‘Cleveland has an AsiaTown?’ at each event. But we drew the downtown office crowd leaving work, and then later into the night, we saw more families. There were strollers all over the place.”

Night Market is the latest fusion of culture and small business to pop up in Cleveland’s resurging St. Clair-Superior neighborhood.

At least that is the last time that I was interested in Tyler.

Funny, cause I have thought the same thing for a long time.  Even south of St. Clair in sections.  I would love to see a street scape plan developed here, because there is some decent commercial stock.

This study will look at St. Clair from East 55th all the way to the Euclid border.  The first round 2 public meeting was held in Collinwood last week.  There will be a future meeting in the St. Clair Superior neighborhood.

The 10,000-square-foot brewery and 175-seat taproom in the Hub 55 development on East 55th Street will open to the public at noon Saturday, July 16. Day one will feature a party with live music and the Sterle's Food Truck outside until 10 p.m.

Goldhorn will open for its regular hours Tuesday, July 19. Those will be 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays to Thursdays; 3 to 10 p.m. Fridays; noon to 10 p.m. Saturdays; and noon to 6 p.m. Sundays.

One of the coolest old industrial complexes in Cleveland. Like the nearby W.S. Tyler Inc. wire complex, this could be a neighborhood unto itself...

All that corrugated metal was windows at some time, and the blue portion of the wall looks like a recent addition, so I would bet you'd see windows installed and that blue portion of the wall probably removed and replaced with something historically accurate- though what that is I wouldn't know for sure.

Hub 55, Sterle's owner launches new development in historic St. Clair-Superior building

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland developer Rick Semersky is extending his reach in the St. Clair-Superior area beyond East 55th Street.

The developer of the Hub 55 complex and the Lakeshore Banking and Trust building and owner of Sterle's Country House has purchased the historic American Gas Association building on East 62nd street.

Long-term plans call for turning the 50,000 square-foot-warehouse into a small-business incubator, in conjunction with Cleveland's Snap Digital company. Designs call for permanent anchor tenants on either end of the building, and flex space for smaller business in the remaining space.

6235 St. Clair is being auctioned by Chartwell on November 16, with a reserve price of $75,000.  The property is partially leased to Citizens Bank and was nationally advertised in the WSJ today, the first Cleveland property I've noticed in a while in that paper.  It should be a nice test of the neighborhood.

I agree--that entire area bounded by St Clair, the tracks, 55th and the Innerbelt would make some amazing lofts.   There are actually a few sprinkled in there--if you drive around at night I've seen some that look like people are doing a live-work thing.     Unfortunately, very few of the buildings are abandoned and most house long-functioning businesses.

St Martin de Porres is getting a good bit of cooperative help from St. Ignatius H. S.  I think they have a good future ahead - for the students and the neighborhood.

What appeared to be a strip club opened just across the street about a month ago. I wondered if this was legal so close to a school. The wording of the sign has changed to indicate the establisment is now a video store. The silhouette of a lady with her legs in the air remains.
