I haven't been to this place yet, but several of my friends have and one of them even works there: There's a place in Hudson now called the Malted Meeple, specializing in craft beer, milkshakes, and board games:

I hope I get to go soonish. :-)

Food notes: Mexican street food coming to downtown Akron; wine dinner at Papa Joe’s; singles event at Acme; win a year of fine dining

El Gato Taqueria is the name of a small Mexican “street food” joint set to open around September in downtown Akron, next to the Lockview, across from Lock 3 park.

Danny Basone, owner of the Lockview at 207 S. Main St., known for its wide selection of grilled-cheese sandwiches, said he’s always wanted to open a second place, and the vacancy next door kept calling him.

The space in Akron’s Merriman Valley has earned a reputation as a spot that just can’t hang on to restaurants.

This time around, nearby residents and foodies are practically gleeful that yet another venture is opening up in the space in the strip plaza at 1375 N. Portage Path, tucked behind the BP gas station at the intersection with Merriman Road.

Akron's new El Gato Taqueria already planning expansion

Restaurateur Danny Basone opened El Gato Taqueria, a street taco restaurant, in late December, but he’s already making plans for warmer weather and bigger crowds.

El Gato, at 209 S. Main St., currently is a deep, narrow, 40-seat eatery, but construction is currently underway on an additional 60-seat room in the back of the restaurant, with a separate bar, set to open in April.

Food notes: Restaurant boom in Montrose; Cellar 59 wine dinner; Seven Courses of Kent
By Katie Byard Beacon Journal staff writer
Published: February 23, 2016 - 06:36 PM

Montrose is home to a boomlet of regional restaurant groups.

The latest to reveal plans to come to the party are Hospitality Restaurants, the Fairview Park-based group behind Rosewood Grill in Hudson; and PizzaFire, the Medina County-headquartered chain that plans to open some 20 locations in the next year.

The new restaurant owned by the Rosewood Grill folks will focus on seafood, and business partners are still considering possible names. It will likely open in June or July, in an existing building on “Restaurant Hill,” off state Route 18 (Medina Road), in the Copley Township portion of the Montrose area west of Akron.

Food notes: Whiskey Ranch, 35 Brix coming to Green; West Point update; vote at Niko’s Sandwich Board

The plan is now to open a permanent spot downtown — Vernon said that because of ongoing negotiations he can’t say where — in a space that already has a kitchen. That would supply a Fairlawn location; again Vernon wouldn’t disclose specifics.

He hopes to get both open later this year, and notes that he is keeping managers on the payroll. And there’s no longer talk about “interim” or temporary sites.

Starbucks confirmed

Work progresses on the new Starbucks in the former China Gourmet, across from Ken Stewart’s Grille on West Market Street in Akron.

Notice I didn’t say “rumored Starbucks,” as I’ve said before. Frank Licata, president of LRC Realty in Akron, confirmed Tuesday that the site is indeed going to be a Starbucks, with a drive-through. The China Gourmet, a onetime Wendy’s, closed last year. Previously, Licata had only been willing to say that LRC did have plans for a “specific tenant” at the site.

Have no fear, Melt Bar & Grilled is really, really going to open in Bath Township in the not-too-distant future. We’re looking at June now, says Matt Fish, the owner/founder of the popular Cleveland-based chain.

And also in the Montrose area, Bomba Tacos & Rum, which is part of the Beachwood-based Paladar Restaurant Group, is set to open May 13 in the former Hudson’s at Cleveland-Massillon Road and state Route 18 in Copley Township. A day before the grand opening, you can get a sneak peek at a fundraising event for Stewart’s Caring Place, a Fairlawn-headquartered nonprofit that offers services to people with cancer.

Bomba Tacos & Rum brings sophisticated tastes of Latin American

Bomba Tacos & Rum does not fit into a standard restaurant category. When you think of tacos, you likely think Mexican food. And when you think of rum, the Caribbean might come to mind.

But Bomba is neither.

Akron Dish: Sugar & Slice to serve pizza and doughnuts near UA; Nervous Dog celebrates a decade; season finale for Food Truck Friday; festivals and wine dinners coming

You’ll soon be able to get a sugar fix and a pizza slice near the University of Akron.

Sugar & Slice is the name of the pizza and doughnut shop that hopes to open late next month at the corner of Grant and East Thornton streets near Akron’s main post office.

This won’t be a sit-down spot. Rather, it’ll have a walk-up window, a drive-thru and delivery service.

Chill Ice Cream dishes out unique attitude and flavors
September 24, 2016 Updated 21 hours ago
 By JENNIFER KARPUS-ROMAIN

Chill Ice Cream Co. hosted its downtown Akron location's grand opening earlier this month, and while the company's first spot in Medina has been booming since April 2015, the origins of the artisan shop goes much further back.

And the future may hold even more growth.

When brothers Zachary, 27, Jeremy, 24, and Patrick Jaworski, 19, were growing up in Valley City, they got sick of traditional ice cream flavors. They truly enjoyed ice cream but wanted something more than just vanilla, chocolate and strawberry.

Yes, High St. Hop House had their soft opening. Looks like Friday open to the public.
Akronym is less than a block away and then Lock 15 Brewery will be in the Cascade Lofts a couple blocks away.

You have to hand it to former Mayor, Don Plusqualic. He never did cave in to the powerful and corrupt food truck lobby.

One of the biggest downfalls of Akron and the former cabinet is that they were too afraid to try any, because "what if..."
Their logic for not having the food trucks was that it would put the brick and mortar places out of business.

Crave Cantina finds a home in Cuyahoga Falls and a Latin concept
May 21, 2017 Updated 2 hours ago
By JENNIFER KARPUS-ROMAIN

Aaron Hervey thinks he has found the ideal location for his newest venture, Crave Cantina.

No matter that the site for the new restaurant, which will feature globally inspired tacos and Latin fare, lies right in the middle of the construction zone as Cuyahoga Falls works to open up Front Street to traffic. The work will be right outside Crave Cantina's front door beginning in July, said Hervey, who owns the new spot and the original Crave in Akron with his wife, Dana.

Crave Cantina is set open on Tuesday, May 23.

The new Administration has certainly been a breath of fresh air when it comes to commercial and retail development opportunities. Food Trucks are a perfect example. I've had friends on City Council for years - and for the longest time, I could only ever roll my eyes at their ongoing excuses for justifying their inactivity or fear of trying anything new. Anything remotely "trendy" - whether it had been proven to be successful or not - was often brushed aside.

^Agreed. Mayor Horrigan as well as Jason Segedy as the city's planning director have particularly done well in bringing a fresh perspective to Akron's governance that has been badly needed for years.

We still have a long way to go, but the difference between the current administration and the previous one is that it is possible to see the way forward now and realistically envision what one or more constructive end outcomes could be for the city.

Plusquellic and his admin weren't all bad by any means, but there is also such a thing as staying in the game too long. He really should have moved on about 10 years earlier than he did.
