Congrats to Case Western Reserve's football team on a statement win, moving to an undefeated 9-0.  Next stop, Pittsburgh, against their arch nemesis rival Carnegie Mellon, who is 7-2.  Game is known as the Academic Bowl.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_Bowl_(college_football)
And congrats to Coach Greg Debeljak on his 100th win of his head coaching career.
BTW...finally, some fantastic media coverage on the only NCAA team in Cleveland city limits:

Case Western Reserve in title chase with 41-10 win over Westminster (photos)

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Case Western Reserve University won, in dominating fashion, the football game it had to win to make its next game crucial.
The Spartans, keyed by Jacob Burke's 160 rushing yards and three touchdowns, routed a strong Westminster team, 41-10, in a Presidents Athletic Conference game at DiSanto Field on Saturday.
Case Western (9-0, 7-0), the nation's 16th-ranked Division III team, closes its regular season with a visit to Carnegie Mellon (7-2, 5-2) next Saturday. A win would likely earn a national playoffs berth for the Spartans, while a loss would probably keep them out of the postseason.

Case Western football team routs Westminster, eyes 10-0 season next week at Carnegie Mellon

It’s taken a while for the Case Western Reserve football team to come full circle, but here it is.
With one game to play this season, the Spartans are on the cusp of a 10-0 regular season, and a likely spot in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

The victory was Debeljak’s 100th of coaching career, and his players delivered the milestone win in impressive fashion. Westminster entered the game 6-2 and this week was regional ranked by NCAA.com.

Case Western Reserve football: Winning big where it counts -- Terry Pluto (photos)

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Here's what it's like to play football at Case Western Reserve University.

It's players pulling all-nighters ... because they have to study for tests.

These guys are after the big time: Admission to medical schools, engineering schools and schools that offer MBA programs.

It's the team facing the biggest game of the season Saturday, but 15 players were excused from Tuesday's practice. They were attending a session called "Special Instruction" to prepare them for exams in Chemistry and Physics.

It's where the guys majoring in corporate and international finance are viewed as taking the "easy courses" by the future engineers and doctors.

CWRU football's spring football game is against the Milano Rhinos in Italy next week, one of the top teams in the Italian Football League (IFL)...not too bad of a spring game.

CWRU SPARTANS TO DEPART FOR NORTHERN ITALY AND SWITZERLAND

The CWRU Spartans, who put together possibly the most successful and certainly one of their best seasons of college football in their university’s history, will be departing on Friday for Europe.  Over a nine-day, eight-night journey they will take in the breath-taking beauty of Lake Como, Italy and equally impressive sites in Switzerland consisting of Lucerne, Interlaken, Bern and Zurich, Switzerland.

Early in their journey the Spartans will play an international friendly contest against the highly successful and proud Milano Rhinos American Football Club.  The Rhinos were champions of the Italian Football League a year ago and finished second last season.

Three big news stories today for CWRU varsity athletics, repping Cleveland, OH sports very well today:)

1)  First time in the playoffs in 17 years, first time winning the regional playoffs:

CWRU Softball Captures Notre Dame Regional; Heading to NCAA Super Regional
Posted: May 13, 2018

The Case Western Reserve University softball team will be playing in the Super Regional of the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history after sweeping the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears on Sunday in the Notre Dame Regional. The Spartans started the day by shutting out the Polar Bears 5-0, and then won the second contest by a score of 5-1. CWRU is now 35-9 on the year, while ONU finished out its season at 32-11.

The Spartans will now await the winner of the Hope College vs. Calvin College Regional Championship game that is being held in Holland, Michigan tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. The winner of that regional will play the Spartans in the NCAA Super Regional at a site to be determined from Friday, May 18th through Saturday, May 19th.

http://athletics.case.edu/sports/sball/2017-18/releases/20180513sdbntm

2) CWRU baseball sweep the University of Chicago today to end the regular season.

This means, against those fellow nerd research institution, CWRU's series records were:

vs Brandeis 4-0
vs University of Chicago 3-0
vs University of Rochester 1-0
vs Emory 3-1
vs New York University 3-1
vs Washington of St. Louis 2-2

CWRU Baseball Sweeps Chicago to Conclude Regular Season
Posted: May 13, 2018

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team ended its regular season on a high note on Sunday, sweeping a doubleheader against the University of Chicago with a 7-6 walk-off victory in the opening game of the day, and following with an 11-4 win in game two of the doubleheader at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, Ohio.

The wins give the Spartans a sweep of the three-game series against Chicago, as the team ended the year on a four-game winning streak.  Case Western Reserve stands at 29-10 on the season, while Chicago completed its 2018 campaign with a 26-13 record.

http://athletics.case.edu/sports/bsb/2017-18/releases/20180513ph385u

3) CWRU football defeated the Milano Rhinos 41-6 in Italy today, before the game was called for a thunderstorm in the second half

CWRU Spartans Efficiently Dominate in Italy

The Case Western Reserve University Spartans started fast and decisively sprinting to a 28-0 first quarter lead versus the Milano Rhinos then cruised to a 41-6 victory in Limbiate, Italy just north of Milan.   The game was shortened as a thunderstorm struck equally decisively early in the 4th quarter with the Spartans threatening to score inside the Rhinos 10-yard line. The international friendly was a rematch of two clubs that met in 2015.

The Rhinos, who had recently won four games in a row to vault into playoff position in the Italian Football League, were not able to handle the precision and speed of the Spartans who scored on every possession in the first half and added a defensive ‘pick-6’ as well.

CLEVELAND -- Chemistry is far more than just a major at Case Western Reserve University.

For members of the softball team, it is the bond that brings them together in pursuit of the ultimate goal: a National Championship.

The Spartans knew they had the potential for a special season during offseason workouts, and while there were struggles at certain points of the year, they lived up to that promise by advancing to the NCAA Division III Championships, which will be played in Oklahoma City this weekend.

Case Western Reserve Spartans just lost a great man to cancer -- longest tenured athletics department employee:

Longtime CWRU Equipment Manager Hugh Marshall Passes Away
Posted: Jun 15, 2018

Case Western Reserve University equipment manager Hugh Marshall, who touched the lives of thousands of members of the community during his over-30 years of service to the campus, passed away on the night of Thursday, June 14, 2018 at the age of 65 after a battle with cancer.

This past season, on October 14th, Marshall was on the sidelines for his 300th-consecutive CWRU football game, a 63-28 win at Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania, and went on to participate in 306-straight Spartan football games by the end of the year.

"Hugh may have touched more lives on campus than any other CWRU employee over the past 30 years," said CWRU Head Football Coach Greg Debeljak.  "Every Spartan athlete knew and liked Hugh, and he always had a friendly word for anyone who he came across."

He was recognized for his 30 years of service at the CWRU Department of Student Affairs end of year celebration in May.  Hugh's unwavering support of the athletic program at Case Western Reserve helped immeasurably improve the collegiate experience for countless students over the last three decades.

Hugh is survived by his older brothers Bill and Craig, and his younger brother David.  A memorial service open to the public will be held at Horsburgh Gymnasium in the Veale Center on the campus of Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, June 23rd from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
