I realized a while back that I've always referred to Ukraine as "the Ukraine" but in recent news articles I've read, I noticed that it's just Ukraine. I wondered if I had just made that up but at the same time, felt that I must have heard "the Ukraine" from somewhere. Apparently, "the Ukraine" is what Russia referred to them as, during soviet times. I wonder why. Why would any country have "the" before the name? That's pretty weird, right? Maybe someone on this forum knows more about it.

@KJP should know

^^^^^^that's what I always thought it was too. Likewise I always thought Congo was "the Congo." I'm sure everyone referred to it like that ages ago, but it's fully Democratic Republic of the Congo, so I guess that's where to confusion comes in.

@David

It's Ukraine. Enjoy....

http://time.com/12597/the-ukraine-or-ukraine/

"Taylor has another linguistic pet peeve that he fought to eradicate from the government’s vocabulary during his time as ambassador: spelling Ukraine’s capital as Kiev, rather than Kyiv. Kiev is the Russian transliteration, while Kyiv is the Ukrainian one. "

Wow.

But see, we in America pronounce it with two syllables as "Key-ev" while in Ukraine they pronounce it with on syllable as "Keeve" -- I'm going with the native pronunciation.

It seems weird to me that there are different names for countries in different languages. In some cases it seems to make sense -- I don't have a problem with dictionary words like "United States" being translated to "Estados Unidos" in Spanish -- but for countries that are an actual name, why do we come up with a different name? Why don't we just call Germany, Deutschland? Why do Spanish speakers call that country Alemania? That would be like if I went to another country and they were like, "Yeah, here we're going to call you Brian instead of Travis."

The Italian word for Germany is Germania - makes sense.  But the Italian word for German is Tedesco. - huh?

That would be like if I went to another country and they were like, "Yeah, here we're going to call you Brian instead of Travis."

I just asked Google how Germany got it's name.

"From the Old High German diutisc meaning "of the people" (e.g. Deutschland). From Latin Germania, probably meaning "neighbor" (e.g. Germany). From the name of the Alemanni tribe (e.g. Allemagne). From the name of the Saxon tribe (e.g. Saksa).Jan 1, 2011"

Once again, the dead and increasingly irrelevant language of Latin is responsible for things that don't make any sense to us, in these linguistic discussions.

I know some people think it's trivial and don't care but I try to call countries/places what their own inhabitants call it. I just think that should be done, out of respect. If Ukrainians say that it's "Ukraine" then that's what I'm going to call it.

We say, "Moss-cow," whereas I've noticed Russians and other Europeans like my Scottish uncle, say "Moss-coh" and I've chosen to pronounce it as "Moss-coh" since I was probably 15, after realizing the difference in pronunciation.

Where did that unnecessary W at the end come from, anyway?

I spent 20 minutes deciding between a jalapeno cheddar bagel and an asiago bagel. I chose the former but am now second guessing the decision.

^^^ According to the CIA World Factbook, the US Department of State, the Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World and the Permanent Committee on Geographical Names for British Official Use, The Gambia is one of only two countries whose self-standing short name for official use should begin with the word "The" - the other one being The Bahamas.

I'm really indecisive, too.

That's how I am at those fancy coke machines with the touch screen, where you can ultimately choose from like a thousand flavors. I go through all of them and think about mixing this and that but I always end up just getting Coke.

Whenever I'd go to Skyline Chili, they ask me if I need a menu and I say, "Yeah." I go through the whole menu and end up ordering a large 3-way every time.

Is this required watching, at all, in Law School? If not, I'd argue that it should be. What an amazing scene, right? I'm surprised that it isn't more highly regarded in cinematic history.

Speaking of court, I'm dealing with quite a family disaster.

One of my brothers just got an OVI... basically a DUI. They seem to change the acronym a lot. It's his second one so he was actually sentenced 20 days in jail. His charges and sentence seem really excessive to me but it happened in a podunk town in Lafayette County. Maybe that makes a difference,  I don't know. Looking online, in addition to OVI, unsafe vehicle (broken tail light) he also had a CCW charge from this incident, which is weird because I know for a fact he doesn't own a gun. The only thing I can think of is that he might have had a pocket-knife in his pocket that somehow qualifies as an illegal concealed weapon.

I'm going to have to pay his rent until he's out of jail so that all of his stuff isn't thrown to the curb.
He's already lost his job. It's crazy how drinking while driving can essentially just ruin your life. Honestly, I've driven many times after having a couple beers and I just didn't think much of it. Some cops will only nail you if you're clearly sh!tfaced and some cops will just try to get you on anything they possibly can, apparently.

They impounded his car and I've tried to get it out for him but the guy at the impound lot said my name would have to be on the title for me to get it out. I informed him that the person who owns it is in jail and by the time he gets out, he'll have racked up far more in storage fees than what the car is worth. I told him that car actually has a LOT of sentimental value, believe it or not, even though it's a clunker and I REALLY need to get it out for him before you end up junking the car. He told me that if I get ahold of the title and get him sign it over to me, then have it notarized, he'd give it to me. I said, 'how the hell do I have someone in jail sign a document and go get something notarized with them?' He goes, "there's a shady notary in town by the *******. They'll just give him a call and then stamp it." I said, 'again, HE'S IN JAIL.'

I don't want to have to worry about finding the title (though it may just be in his car,) switching the title to me and then back to him and paying all of those fees for switching the title back and forth.

If I have time tomorrow, for what it's worth, I'm going to print out the most all-inclusive Ohio Power of Attorney document, march up to the frickin' county jail, see if there's any way they're able to hand the document to him and let him know he's signing it to recover his car, then take said document signed by both of us to this alleged shady notary in town, where I'm going to have to go in there and be like, "LOOK... I was referred to you buy this impound lot guy and the other party isn't present..." Explain the whole situation and hope to God for a damn stamp.

Then take it to the impound lot.

Well, that was surprisingly easy, to get the car. I ended up going down there to the Sheriff's office and explained the whole ordeal and how I was trying to help my bro out. They just had to make a phone call to the local police department (across the street...) since they were the ones who arrested him, and the police department then made a phone call to the towing company, saying relinquish the vehicle to David; he's authorized. Man, I love small-town politics.

I can't imagine that this was a unique circumstance.   I'd say it was the lot operator who was shady, looking to add a couple days of storage fees.   He may have been getting a kickback from the notary.
