That was a big win last night. All 3 bigs, who are first year players here, played well. Another big game Saturday against VCU.

^ VCU rammed UC on Saturday.

But you can forgive the Bearcats for the sub-par performance.  Just 90 minutes before the game, 43-year-old head coach Mick Cronin told his team that he would not be on the sideline.  Cronin was diagnosed with an unruptured aneurysm and will be sidelined indefinitely while doctors decide how to treat it.

The report about this at http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/12056548/cincinnati-bearcats-coach-mick-cronin-aneurysm contained this tweet from Coach Cronin:

Mick Cronin - @CoachCroninUC
I want everyone to know I am going to be ok!!  I just can't coach for precautionary reasons with my medical condition.

Bearcats currently up 17 points against NC St. An odd start time of 4 pm on ESPNU. Just came across it.

That was one the better games I have seen UC play in some time. They dominated that game and shut down the leading scorers for
NC State, on the road. If they can make open shots they are going to win often. Cobb and Deberry were steals via the JUCO ranks.

UC's Mick Cronin is out for rest of season

Quote
University of Cincinnati men's basketball coach Mick Cronin will not coach his team in practices or games for the rest of the 2014-15 season for health reasons, UC announced Friday at a press conference which Cronin attended.

Cronin will stay with the team in an advisory role that includes directing the coaching staff, game planning and recruiting.

UC announced Dec. 20 that Cronin had a brain aneurysm, and the coach has missed three games since. Friday, the update from UC on Cronin's condition was that he has a non-life threatening vascular condition known as arterial dissection. His treatment and recovery includes rest, medication and keeping a normal blood pressure.

Cronin's condition was discovered in mid-December during a routine workup scheduled after a complaint of lingering headaches. He has missed three games since, with UC going 2-1 under associate head coach Larry Davis.

Mick is lucky that this was caught by the doctors. Hope he fully recovers.

Despite missing Cronin, UC is doing pretty well. They are 11-3, and 2-0 in conference play, which is enough to get them a 39 RPI ranking. They are giving up just 54 points per game on average, 7th best in NCAA.

Nice profile of the UC vs X rivalry. Even if the writer is a tOSU guy.

"...Cincinnati is located pretty much where Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky meet ... Itís as if Cincinnati, in its early days, had a citywide meeting to decide which state to associate itself with and the residents picked none of the above and decided to just do their own thing."

UC really needed that win.  I know they're probably going to get destroyed by UK, but advancing past a good and very big Purdue team without Ellis was a huge accomplishment.  The Bearcats seem to be like the Bengals these days.  Consistently good enough to get to the post season, but they never do much when they get there.  This program has an excellent history, and I've been looking for them to make the next step back to excellence for a while.  Wins like the one last night certainly help.  Go UC!

This is obviously not official but the seeding predictions could create an interesting first two rounds for local teams:

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/bracketology

The prediction is Xavier as a #2 seed facing UAB, and should they win they'd face the winner of a game between 7 seed Dayton and 10 seed Cincinnati.

UC is currently #6 in the country and their KenPom rank is #4.  With Auburn's loss tonight, the Bearcats are projected to be a 2 seed.  This could be the year they finally have some tourney success!

I'm sorry, but the ranking is inflated. They have not beat a top 25 team.

UC's resume does not look too shabby on the NCAA's team sheet as of now (page 8 of this PDF):

https://extra.ncaa.org/solutions/rpi/Stats%20Library/Feb.%207,%202018%20Team%20Sheets.pdf

Cincinnati is 4-2 in Tier 1, and those 2 losses are their only loses. It's hard to argue that a team like Purdue is any better than Cincinnati right now. The City of Cincinnati might very well have two top 5 teams next week. It's possible the city ends up having two number 1 seeds in the tournament.

You haven't been watching them if you think that.  Or you're a Xavier fan.  :P

In today's "pre-selection" show, UC was picked to be a 2 seed.  Just keep winning!

One of the most overrated teams in basketball.  One of the first real teams the Bearcats faced, and they lost at home.  Two in a row, and one to an unranked team.

^ Well, given the events of the past week they're, at most, the second most overrated team in the state of Ohio.

^The Buckeyes aren't even worth mentioning.  They never should have been ranked to begin with, but same goes for UC.

^ Well, they both should be ranked somewhere. OSU is a top 20 team and UC is a top 10 team, IMO. The entire top 25 is a sea of mediocrity this year, which should actually make for a good tournament. I'd have to look back, but it seems to me like top 25 teams lost almost as many games as they won this week.
