Cincinnati Art Museum to feature ancient Chinese artifacts, many not seen before in U.S.

Tickets for one of the Cincinnati Art Museum's most highly anticipated exhibits are now on sale.

"Terracotta Army: Legacy of the First Emperor of China," which runs April 20-Aug. 12, features 120 pieces showcasing the formation and influence of China's Qin dynasty, including life-sized terra-cotta warrior figures, jade ornaments, arms and armor, and ritual bronze vessels.

Its Cincinnati curator says the exhibit contains artifacts from "the most important archaeological discovery of the 20th century." The works, which date from 770 to 206 B.C., are among the oldest Asian artworks ever shown at the museum, and more than 40 of the items have never been displayed before in the U.S.

Cincinnati Art Museum presents an Italian Baroque ‘first’

The Cincinnati Art Museum announced Tuesday that it will present a rare collection of Baroque masterpieces for the first time.

“Cagnacci: Painting Beauty and Death” will be on view March 23-July 22. This free special exhibit brings together a select group of Italian Baroque paintings for the first time: three works by Guido Cagnacci and one by Bernardo Strozzi.

“Cagnacci: Painting Beauty and Death”will introduce guests to the 17th-century painter Guido Cagnacci. The centerpiece is the oil on canvas “Death of Cleopatra” (1660-62), which is on loan from the Pinacoteca de Brera (Brera Paintings Gallery) in Milan, Italy.

Rarely seen terracotta treasures reveal legacy of China’s first emperor in Cincinnati

The terracotta infantryman wears body armor and stands at attention with a fierce expression. He appears ready to leap into battle. His hair is swept into a topknot, wrapped by a ribbon that shows vestiges of red paint added 23 centuries ago.

The stunningly lifelike figure is one of 8,000 ancient terracotta warriors and horses discovered by local farmers who were digging a well in 1974 near the city of Xi’an in Shaanxi Province, China. The army was meant to accompany China’s First Emperor, Qin Shihuang, into the afterlife.

Nine of the warriors, as well as a cavalry horse, arms and armor, works in gold and silver, ancient vessels and a spectacular, life-like replica of a chariot and rider with four horses will be on display in Cincinnati Art Museum’s “Terracotta Army: Legacy of the First Emperor of China,” April 20-Aug. 12.
