It was stated upthread that the crane should be in the sky in August

I don't think that's the case anymore. I think we're looking October-November.

I would expect to see concrete walls/foundation floors in place before that. In fact, I don't think they've even put the foundation pad in place yet, have they?

Not to my (limited) knowledge

As much as I don't like seeing threads going off topic, I think the following photos of the Hilton construction might help put things in perspective.

March 7, 2014
End of the "moving dirt around" phase, note how the site is smoothed out (Lumen site isn't at this point yet):

April 17,2014
Caisson drilling equipment has been set up:

May 9, 2014
Caisson drilling well underway:

July 16, 2014
We finally see the first portion of the tower crane (far right of photo), and by the end of July the first phase of the tower crane was in place:

That was on topic...and depressing! So we could be looking at December or January before the tower crane makes its appearance?

Are they using caissons or a pad to support the Lumen?

This article also provides remarkable detail on the complexity of the project's capital stack and public subsidies...

The article also states that Cleveland new construction costs are equal to Chicago?

That's probably true. Is there a way to reduce them? Probably deserves its own thread.

I'm not sure if I believe it. Chicago has some interesting building codes that add costs to construction. But construction is not my area of expertise.

From the Lumen webcam, it looks like the next phase of construction is beginning - caisson drilling!   :)

5 months for excavation is much longer than I expected. Crane might be up by the end of the year?

I remember they were thinking August for the crane to be constructed. Doesn't look like that's going to happen

"Were not building on farmland, were building on structures in an incredibly active section of Euclid Avenue during the late 1800s and early 1900s, he says. Its not a surprise that youd find something left. Its a matter of what you will uncover."

And that's on *top* of the issues with construction/excavation when it comes to downtown (glacial sediment, till, etc.) - our forumers in the geotechnical field are welcome to chime in.

I walked by today because I'm overly nosey and why not... one of the guys walking to Corbo's told me they think they'll start actual construction in early October with the crane coming somewhere near Thanksgiving to Christmas

How long will the crane stay up at the beacon? Will we have two cranes in the air at the same time?

I dont understand this obsession with cranes. Its the finished product that counts.

Because they look like progress

I read an article about a year ago about the psychological impact cranes have on investors. They had a cool anecdote about Austin, when people came into town, they felt they were in the right place because they could see a crane in every direction, and felt more confident investing.

Quick question for the construction experts....if you look at the Lumens web cam, it looks like they are done drilling the caissons?  Everything is cleared out?
