I believe this building will not have pilings but will be placed on a “floating” concrete slab. This is a typical foundation for Cleveland buildings that are 400 feet or less. Taller buildings must be placed on pilings driven to bedrock. However, I believe, the Hilton Hotel was built on piles. In the 400’ range, the foundation could be either except pilings are much more expensive.

It's already been stated that The Lumen will be built on caissons to bedrock.

Well so be it! Foundation technology has advanced the slab foundation to carrying taller buildings. This makes it a choice for whatever reasons. The master of skyscraper foundations in Cleveland, Mr. Lewin, told me that at the excavation for the National City Bank Building many years ago as he was supervising the pour of the slab.

Construction progress on Lumen, the 34-story apartment tower in Playhouse Square. They're pile driving the walls for the basement foundation. And a lot of kids were out in force in PHS.

For reference, KJP's third picture shows the Keith Building across Euclid from The Lumen construction.  The Lumen is expected to be 34 floors, but The Keith Building is only 21 floors.

I heard today that they're expecting to have 10-12 floors done by the end of August. Am I the only one that thinks that's overly optimistic??

Excavators have uncovered something while removing dirt for the foundation of the new Lumen tower. Lots of speculation on Twitter...

I love watching the construction across from my office and find it fascinating. Not everyone gets it, but can we all agree that today’s discovery is wildly exciting?! What have they uncovered?! I like to think it’s the hatch from lost and Desmond is down there keeping us alive. https://twitter.com/KateWarrenCLE/status/996808236736098304

@KateWarrenCLE
Other possibilities:
-The actual crypt of Marcus Hanna
-A vault or secret treasure trove of some kind
-A time capsule
-Most realistic option: something to do with HVAC
Now accepting submissions for what this thing could be! We may never know for sure!

@TomHorsman
It looks like that was the old location of a Central National Bank branch. Perhaps a vault of some kind?

@thiswascle
I dunno, maybe George Willey had a basement Ziggurat?

@inthewabe
It could be the foundation of the annex building that was demolished in 2012.

The vault under the former Jewish Community Center (where the Edge now sits) was MASSIVE. I remember it took them 3-4 days just to excavate it

When they were building the new WKYC-TV3 building on Lakeside, they were pouring concrete for a foundation. But the concrete kept pouring and pouring and pouring. Finally they stopped to look and see what was going on and found that they were filling in a massive, brick-lined underground vault for a old brewery that hadn't been there since the 1800s. So they kept on pouring more cement until it filled in. Someday, someone is going find this huge concrete underground slab structure lined with old bricks and be very confused.

There may be an @mjarboe article about this discovery. Excavators also found an old foundation wall along East 17th. Interesting because this section of East 17th was built only about 10 years ago.

There's a Cleveland connection to his disappearance, which I posted here: https://www.urbanohio.com/forum/index.php/topic,31786.msg913671.html#msg913671
