Another regional city is doing some good things.

STEAM Park

"Unveiled at Greater Fort Wayne Inc.’s annual meeting Thursday, the $180 million park’s name stands for Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math. Current plans call for a saltwater and freshwater aquarium and an IMAX theater, as well as buildings designed for fun educational children’s programming. The whole thing would be connected to Lawton Park by a land bridge to provide easier access to Science Central"

New project shows Ash Brokerage head not done improving downtown



The gleaming Ash Skyline Plaza opened in June as the anchor of a $98 million office, retail, residential and parking complex. But Ash Brokerage CEO Tim Ash apparently isn't done reshaping downtown.

A group headed by Ash this week bought the adjacent Fifth Third Metro Center from developer Bill Bean and plans to redevelop the eight-story office building at Berry and Harrison streets, according to Tony Brita, spokesman for the new owners. What that redevelopment might look like will be determined in part by incentives and grants available, Brita said, but he acknowledged speculation the building could be reconfigured to include residential and commercial spaces and possibly an elevated walkway to the Ash building across the street. Some tenants have said they are already looking for new offices.

Riverfront pavilion plan unveiled



The Fort Wayne Parks Department on Thursday unveiled its vision for a performance pavilion that would anchor proposed riverfront development.

The $1.5 million futuristic-looking structure, with indoor and outdoor seating and a swooping triangular roof line, is tentatively called Compass Pavilion. The pavilion would sit on as-yet-unacquired property across the St. Marys River from the Wells Street bridge.

At Thursday morning’s board meeting, Steve McDaniel, deputy director of park maintenance, displayed an architect’s rendering of the pavilion. He said dimensions, materials and design details might change slightly.

But if the project is approved “it’s pretty much going to look like that,” he said.

Construction begins on Skyline Tower downtown



Construction crews began work to add on to one of downtown's newest buildings. It's a project that's been nearly a decade in the making. Dirt is being moved on the west side of the Ash Skyline Plaza. When the 12-story Skyline Tower is complete, it will be the tallest building built in downtown in decades.

"It's probably the most investment in a project downtown in my lifetime," says the city’s director of community development, Greg Leatherman.

The $40 million Skyline Tower is the second phase of a $100 million development at the mixed-use ash Skyline Plaza, which will ultimately incorporate an entire block at Harrison and Wayne Streets.

New plans for The Landing redevelopment unveiled

The vision for “The Landing” has been unveiled and we’ve learned that one building will be torn down in order to make room for another. The big news was revealed at The Landing Unveiled event downtown at the Arts United Center.

The plan is to mix in with all the old is something brand new: a multi-story mixed use building. Restaurants and retail on the 1st floor, a 2nd floor office space, and remaining floors residential. In order for that to happen the Rose-Marie building at 111 W. Columbia will have to come down. The idea is not just to revitalize Columbia street, but to reinvent it.

“[It’s] restored historic architecture,” said Steve Smith, President and CEO of The Model Group. “It was beautiful when it was built so really we want to restore that beauty. There will also be a new construction component that will not attempt to mimic the historic rehab. In fact you wouldn’t want it to.”

Upscale 'boutique' hotel coming to downtown Fort Wayne in 2019



The co-founder of Vera Bradley is teaming up with an Oregon company to develop a boutique hotel in downtown Fort Wayne.

Barbara Bradley Baekgaard, chief creative officer and director of the Fort Wayne-based women's handbag company, was expected to announce Tuesday Provenance Hotels of Portland will open a 120-room facility in 2019. Baekgaard and Provenance are working with the city and Greater Fort Wayne Inc. to select a site, possibly along Harrison Street.

Updated plans for proposed downtown arena revealed

Although a decision about whether to build a downtown arena still hasn't officially been made, the design of the proposed $85 million facility is coming into focus.

Interior and exterior plans obtained exclusively by The News-Sentinel indicate the so-called "event center" will contain three levels, with the ground floor containing restaurants and bars and the third level luxury suites. The seating, which has been projected to accommodate up to 6,000 spectators, would be in a "horseshoe" shape and open on the western end, adjacent to loading docks, storage and service areas. The main entrance and ticket office would be on the east side of the building off Webster Street, and the arena would be connected to the adjacent Grand Wayne Convention Center by an elevated walkway.

Really liking all these CDM project updates from these cities in neighboring states (like Detroit & Indy).  Especially interesting how even smaller cities like Fort Wayne are getting some good urban projects as well.

Plus these Fort Wayne updates bring back memories of late great forumer Robert Pence.  He would really be proud of these updates to his hometown.

GE Broadway campus in downtown Fort Wayne gets developer for $300 million project

The GE Broadway campus, once a sign of vitality in Fort Wayne, is getting a breath of life.

Greater Fort Wayne Inc. announced Monday there is a new developer for the campus. Cross Street Partners of Baltimore was selected to purchase and redevelop it.

The campus was the site of a major job provider in Fort Wayne. At its zenith in the late 1940’s, GE’s Motors Division supported more than 10,000 manufacturing jobs in the city. Those days ended and by the time the company announced it would be leaving Fort Wayne there were only 30 workers reporting to the 1,000,000 square foot complex.

Latest arena design provides almost 6,000 seats and costs $105M

Architects today unveiled the latest renderings and the most complete plans thus far for a new downtown event center just west of the Grand Wayne Center.

Along with the new views and more detailed plans came the new cost estimate: $104.9 million. That price includes an allowance for rising construction costs, but it doesn’t include land acquisition.

As configured now, the arena would include seating for 5,986 for concerts or 5,646 for basketball, according to the presentation before the Allen County Fort Wayne Capital Improvement Board.

Parks board details Phase II riverfront concepts; approves Phase I bidding contracts



The Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department's Board of Park Commissioners unveiled new details for Phase II of riverfront development at their monthly meeting on Thursday.

Phase II will involve the area between the Wells Street Bridge and Ewing Street Bridge and focus on expanding the riverfront promenade and the tree canopy trail that are large parts of Phase I and continue the mission to attract businesses to invest private funds in economic development along the St. Mary's River.

Council approves riverfront development contracts, construction set for July

As expected, Fort Wayne City Council approved multiple contracts for first phase of riverfront development.

The more than $17.1 million in awarded contracts cover a range of projects.

Deal for former GE site closes



The former local General Electric campus is officially out of GE's hands.

RTM Ventures has completed a $5.5 million acquisition of the 39-acre property just south of Fort Wayne's downtown core, officials told The Journal Gazette.

RTM Ventures is a joint venture created by Cross Street Partners, of Baltimore; Greenstreet Ltd., of Indianapolis; and Biggs Development, of Decatur.

The firms and their plans for the campus now called Electric Works were unveiled to the public in February during a ceremony attended by Gov. Eric Holcomb, Mayor Tom Henry and other city and county officials. The $300 million, mixed-use development will be funded with a combination of private and public money.

One-of-a-Kind Hotel Proposed for Downtown Fort Wayne

Mayor Tom Henry joined Barbara Bradley Baekgaard, representatives from Provenance Hotels, elected officials and community leaders today to announce a proposal to bring a 125-room boutique hotel to downtown Fort Wayne.

The $27.7 million one-of-a-kind specialty hotel would be located on City of Fort Wayne property at the northwest corner of Harrison and Main streets. The project was selected by a team of City of Fort Wayne and community leaders after issuing a request for proposals. Plans call for five floors, restaurants, ground-level retail spaces and a rooftop entertainment space.

“I’m grateful to Barbara and Provenance Hotels for their plans to invest in Fort Wayne and bring us a hotel that will rival specialty hotels around the world,” said Mayor Henry. “Their vision will complement the exciting things happening throughout our community, such as riverfront development, and will continue to make Fort Wayne a point of destination for businesses and visitors.”

Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission gives OK to new hotel, huge downtown land buy

Two major downtown improvement projects took initial but important steps forward Monday, thanks to the Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission.

In separate votes, the board approved an agreement that will make a parking lot at Main and Harrison streets available for construction of a 125-room, $27.7 million “boutique” hotel to be operated by Oregon-based Provenance Hotels in partnership with Vera Bradley co-founder Barbara Bradley Baekgaard and agreed to accept ownership of a 28-acre site north of downtown if certain other conditions are met.

$61.7 million housing, retail project planned for Fort Wayne’s downtown riverfront



A Minnesota developer plans to build a $61.7 million residential, commercial and parking project on Fort Wayne’s downtown riverfront.

As The News-Sentinel.com first reported, Mayor Tom Henry on Monday announced Continental Property Group will erect a seven-story building containing about 150 residential units, 20,000 square feet of retail space, green space, 1,000-space parking garage and a 13,000-square-foot “amenities deck” accessible by residents at the northeast corner of Harrison and Superior streets.

Later Monday, the city’s Redevelopment Commission approved a development agreement under which the city would pay annual rent equal to $1.5 million for 25 years, to be repaid through taxes generated by the project. The city would operate the parking structure, receive its revenues and be responsible for operational costs.

Ruoff plans downtown Fort Wayne headquarters



Ruoff Home Mortgage plans to build a new office building in downtown Fort Wayne to house its corporate headquarters, NewsChannel 15 has learned.

The Fort Wayne-based home lender is currently in talks with the city to purchase land at the southwest corner of Jefferson Boulevard and Ewing Street, near Parkview Field and the Cityscape Flats residential complex. Ruoff plans to build an 8-story, 97,000 square foot building at the site, with a parking garage and street-level space for retail shops, company officials confirmed to NewsChannel 15.

The project is expected to cost an estimated $32 million.

Riverfront Fort Wayne Phases II and III underway

A Philadelphia-based firm will head up design and implementation of Phases II and III of Fort Wayne's downtown riverfront development efforts, city officials announced Friday.

City Council will discuss the $2.5 million design contract later this month. If approved, it will be paid for out of the portion of the local income tax increase earmarked for riverfront development. The .13 percent increase was approved last year. Similarly, a contract with Riverworks Design Group for Phase I cost the city $2.2 million.

David Rubin Land Collective was selected to lead the team of architects, urban designers and engineers that will put together the upcoming development.
