While the world responds with alarm over President Donald Trump's spontaneous decision to cancel diplomatic talks with North Korea scheduled for next month—which aimed to ease rising nuclear tensions—131 Democrats in the U.S. House joined with the overwhelming majority of Republicans to pass a $717 billion Pentagon spending bill that includes massive expansion of the U.S. nuclear arsenal.

We need more nukes?

So dumb.  We can already destroy the world several times over.  Even if that was some goal, it can only be done once.  This is the absolute epitome of cynical humanity, but also a really stupid, fiscally irresponsible one.

I believe the spending is for modernizing the nuclear arsenal.  I'm not sure if it's safe to keep trying maintain ancient technology on such dangerous weapons.

I was going to say, sight unseen, if it had 131 Democrats on board, the odds are it wasn't just a giant increase in the stockpile.

Also, I actually thought that our nuclear weapons, for odd old reasons, were actually under the jurisdiction of the Department of Energy.  I forget if that was to try to disguise to the Soviets the various portions of our overall nuclear infrastructure that was for civilian and military purposes or how exactly that came about.  Maybe they did away with it at some point in the last decade or so.

The fiscal picture is worse than it looks—and it looks bad
https://www.brookings.edu/blog/up-front/2018/04/11/the-fiscal-picture-is-worse-than-it-looks-and-it-looks-bad/

And it keeps getting worse.
"For the first half of the fiscal year, the shortfall is $600 billion, up 14% over the prior fiscal year’s first six months. The Treasury’s latest release comes after the Congressional Budget Office forecast a deficit of $804 billion for the current fiscal year — and a return to trillion-dollar deficits in 2020."

The fiscal year starts in September, before the tax cuts kicked in.

$147 billion deficit recorded in May.

As a fiscally conservative person this makes me just sick.  I know the Republican Party has really never been truly fiscally responsible, but this is beyond the pale.

It was the largest deficit for a single month since 2009.

“Despite President Trump's declaration that he would eliminate the national debt over eight years, the debt-to-Gross Domestic Product ratio has reached its highest level since after World War II, according to a new report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). And if current law and spending levels remain unchanged, national debt will be nearly the size of the economy by 2028.”

So, The Master Negotiator argues that President Obama is paying too much for Air Force One replacements, THEN repeatedly talks about how much he's been able to reduce the cost, but ultimately ends up paying MORE.  So much for either his fiscal conservativism or his negotiation skills.  Just add that to the cost of the Afghanistan/Iraq Wars that we're still paying for....

And now, Donald Trump has completed his negotiations, coming up with a new price of … $3.9 billion. That’s right. After two years of negotiation, Donald Trump’s price is a billion dollars higher than where he started. No wonder everyone loves to negotiate with Trump.

Deficit projected to top $1 trillion next fiscal year.

It's also funny that Trump is taking a "tough" trade stance with China yet allows those guys to continue to buy our debt! No tough words to China for underwriting our spending/cutting-tax debt lunacy from over the last 50 years. Of course not, his budget is just as bloated as his predecessors.

The Treasury Department announced Monday the federal government plans to borrow $329 billion in the current July-September quarter. That’s the highest third-quarter figure in eight years, as the government faces rising borrowing needs due to higher budget deficits.

Treasury said the projected borrowing is 74 percent higher than the $189 billion borrowed in the same quarter a year ago and would mark the largest July-September amount since 2010.

Deficit projected to top $1 trillion next fiscal year.

That really is awful.  I know the tea party gang has pretty much faded away but I think the Dem's ironically could use this to hammer Trump or any vulnerable republicans for that matter....

Nobody listens to that though. All the Rs have to do is say that they spend less and over 100 million people actually believe them.

The Tea Party has far from faded-away.   They are just true to their intended purpose now--railing against brown people while claiming they care about the debt.
