Ill Mannered Brewing Co. Breaks Ground on New Facility Next Week

Construction on Ill Mannered Brewing Co.’s new facility will finally begin next week, following an initial announcement last summer. The brewery, which first opened roughly two and a half years ago, will be developing a new brewery and taproom just east of its existing location at 30 Grace Drive in Powell. The goal is to open before their third anniversary in late August.

Growing craft brewer could be in its new space by end of summer

Ill Mannered Brewing Co. expects to be in its new brewery by late August.

The Powell craft beer maker announced its expansion plans last summer. It is hosting a groundbreaking celebration at 4 p.m. Wednesday to mark the start of work on that new facility.

"This day has been a long time in the works and we couldn’t be more excited,” co-owner and head brewer Tom Ayers said in a release. “We’ll be delivering fresh, local, hand-crafted beer here for a long time to come.”

New craft brewery to call Lewis Center home

A new craft brewery expects to be open in Lewis Center by summer.

Olentangy River Brewing Co. is opening a production facility and taproom at 303 Green Meadows Dr. near the corner of Rt. 23 and Powell Road and Highbanks Metro Park. Renovations on the space start this month.

The ownership group includes Ryan Wilkins, Sarah Wilkins, Scott Schweitzer and Bethany Schweitzer.

Lewis Center Soon to See Opening of Olentangy Brewing Company Facility & Taproom

Renovations are beginning soon on a new brewing facility opening later this year in Lewis Center. Olentangy River Brewing Company, started by local entrepreneurs Sarah Wilkins, Scott Schweitzer, Josh Vogel, and Enrique Iglesias, will take over an old warehouse near the corner of Route 23 and Powell Road. It’s located at 303 Green Meadows Drive South.

The warehouse offers enough space for a production brew house and a taproom with an outdoor area.

Trek Brewing now open for limited hours in Newark

Trek Brewing Co. is open – now it has to keep up with demand.

The Newark brewery is the latest new addition to the Central Ohio beer scene and is open for limited hours at 1486 Granville Rd., a 9,000-square-foot former Damon’s restaurant.

“When we first started looking, there was nothing in Newark and now there are three taprooms,” co-owner John Ream told me. “There’s a clear demand here.”

BrewDog taking on gender inequality with rebranded beer

If women are going to be paid less for work, BrewDog says they should pay less for beer.

The craft brewer on Tuesday announced its latest mission/promotion – a “Beer for Girls” that rebrands its flagship Punk IPA as Pink IPA and replaces its blue label with a pink one. That pink pandering is part of the point.

“This is our overt parody on the failed, tone-deaf campaigns that some brands have attempted in order to attract women,” BrewDog USA CEO Tanisha Robinson said in a release.

Licking County craft brewer adding capacity to meet demand

Dankhouse Brewing Co. is encountering a problem common to many new craft brewers – nothing is ever enough.

Husband and wife Josh and Heather Lange opened the Newark brewery in November at 161 Forry St. in a 2,400-square-foot building on a 8.5-acre wooded lot.

“We’ve definitely had to expedite some things,” Josh Lange told me. “Everybody tells you to go big at the start, but we had no idea about the response we’d get.”

Wolf’s Ridge Brewing Will Add Event Space This Year

Wolf’s Ridge Brewing (215 N. Fourth St. - Downtown) is on the road to expansion.  The five-year-old brewery and taproom is absorbing the adjacent 3,700 square foot space on the northern side of their building.  The first week of April, work will begin to build out an event room and kitchen.  An opening is expected by late fall.

The space itself has been vacant for more than a decade, but Wolf’s Ridge co-founder Bob Szuter said that, already occupying 17,000 square feet, they’d never given thought to a purpose for the extra 3,700.  That’s since changed as they look to grow the events side of the business.
( . . . )
Wolf’s Ridge’s takeover will change up the aesthetic of the space, both inside and out.  They’re adding more signage and two floor-to-ceiling windows to the Hickory Street-facing wall.

Here are some details on the 2018 Columbus Craft Beer Week collaboration

As has now become tradition, Central Ohio craft brewers put their collective minds and abilities toward a special beer to commemorate Columbus Craft Beer Week, which returns this year May 11-19.

This year’s brew is Confluence IPA, a New England-style IPA made with a pilsner base to give it a light body, a New England yeast strain and an experimental hop called BRU-1.

Confluence IPA will rollout for Columbus Craft Beer Week and will be on tap at Six One Pour: The Ohio Craft Beer Fest, which is set for May 12 at Huntington Park.  The fest will feature 50 Ohio craft breweries.

New microdistillery now selling; bottle shop coming soon

Central Ohio’s newest microdistillery wants to bring new flavors to the market.

Bottles of Noble Cut Distillery are now out in a few bars and restaurants around Columbus, and a bottle shop should open in the next few weeks at the 750 Cross Pointe Rd. distillery in Gahanna.

“We’re pretty product agnostic,” co-founder Ben Vause told me.

Brewer anniversaries highlight the next couple of busy beer weekends

What better day to mark an anniversary than National Beer Day?

If you’re looking for a venue in which to celebrate this occasion, Kindred Brewing in Gahanna is having a two-year anniversary party Saturday at its 505 Morrison Rd. taproom.

The day’s festivities kick off early, at 9:45 a.m. to be exact, with a yoga class hosted by Thank Yoga Studio. The $16 ticketed event includes a free beer. The taproom opens up at 11 a.m.

Ohio brewer's Columbus facility to supply the state

A northeast Ohio craft brewery is coming to Columbus, but its focus is statewide.

Ohio Brewing Co. is plotting a production brewery and taproom at 421 E. Second Ave. in the Milo-Grogan neighborhood. Work is underway now at the 40,000-square-foot former Blue Box Co. packaging company warehouse just east of the tracks separating Milo-Grogan from Italian Village.

“This is going to be most of our production,” co-founder Chris Verich told me. “This will enable us to be in Columbus in draft and cans and expand distribution statewide. It’s going to let us do a lot more new beers.”

Can someone recommend a BrewDog beer to me that will help me understand the hype? I most like sours and IPAs. I've had Elvis Juice, hated it; and Punk IPA, it's fine but really generic IMO. I'm open to other styles, though white ales and Belgians are my least favorite.

Taps and corks: Marysville winery now brewing beer, too

Dalton Union hopes it is as good at mashing barley as it is smashing grapes.

The Marysville winery opened three years ago and while plenty of vino is still on the menu, owners Tonya Mabry and Dale Mabry added a brewery to the operation earlier this year.

Dalton Union is one of six new additions to the Columbus Ale Trail Vol. 4, a 41-stop tour of Central Ohio breweries, which kicked off last week. It’s the first and thus far only stop in Union County.

How Wild Ohio Brewing moved from making kombucha tea to specialty beer

Owner Russell Pinto's Wild Ohio Brewing tea beers are proudly niche, aimed less at dedicated beer connoisseurs and more at the lighter imbiber. It also may be a rare unique product.

Here are the details on Land-Grant's collaboration with Jeni's

Land-Grant Brewing Co.’s next new beer isn’t so much about replicating flavor as enhancing it.

The Franklinton-based craft brewery is playing host to Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams’ annual Strawberry Jam event, which celebrates the peak strawberry season and the release of the ice cream-maker’s popular Strawberry Buttermilk ice cream. The event is June 2 and, in addition to the beer and ice cream, will also have summer and strawberry-inspired foods from Hot Chicken Takeover, Fox in the Snow Cafe, Dough Mama and Ray Ray’s Hog Pit. (More on that next week).

Grandview’s High Bank Distillery Opening Soon

The wait is almost over to check out High Bank Distillery in Grandview Heights, Columbus’ first distillery to open with a restaurant and bar. With renovations finally nearing an end, co-owners Adam Hines and Jordan Helman said High Bank would host some soft openings next week before opening officially on Monday, June 4.

High Bank’s building at 1051 Goodale Blvd. offers 17,000 square feet and encompasses a lot. The bulk of it is production space, which, sitting behind 14-foot windows, will be visible to High Bank patrons. On the bar side, there’s enough seating for 200 guests, who have their choice of bar, booth, or patio. Though, with plenty of activities like shuffleboard, bubble hockey, foosball, life-size Jenga, and cornhole, standing and wandering is also an option.

Lancaster's newest brewery a fit for downtown

Double Edge Brewing is another example of being not just a local beer, but the local beer.

The craft brewery opened up in downtown Lancaster in March, taking over a 3,300-square-foot building at 158 W. Chestnut St. that had been numerous things over the years, including a printer repair shop, a diner and a filing station.

Brewery, restaurant, offices coming soon along Parsons Avenue

The gradual revitalization of Parsons Avenue will get a heady addition this year.

Parsons North Brewing Co. could be crafting up some beer and pouring by late fall. The venture, co-owned by Nathan Klein and Seth Draeger, will take 4,700-square-feet at 685 Parsons Ave. in the East Public project underway on that block.

The multi-building development also will include the Commune restaurant in the southernmost building, Sidecar Creatives design studio and office spaces for Compton Construction in the northernmost building.

Seventh Son Brewing now open seven days a week

Fans of Seventh Son Brewing now can celebrate at the Italian Village taproom on Mondays, too.

Opening seven days a week is among a number of recent changes at Seventh Son. In April, the building finished an expansion that includes a second-floor patio and bar with a retractable roof.

"When we were going through the expansion, we used to use Mondays as a home projects day, where we'd work on the building," said co-owner Colin Castore. "We realized now that we have enough room to work on projects in the back, and keep the bar open in the front."

Powell craft brewery is tapping into its new facility

Ill Mannered Brewing Co. is ready to show off its new space.

The Powell craft brewer will cut the ribbon Wednesday at its 3,000-square-foot new taproom and brewery at 38 Grace Dr., a stone’s throw from the tight quarters it has called home since opening in 2015.

“We’ve built our brand around quality, fresh, local beer, an intimate taproom and making our guests feel welcome,” saidTom Ayers, Ill Mannered's co-owner and head brewer. “Carrying that experience to the new facility while providing more options and space is truly exciting.

New meadery opens on city's east side

Columbus is home to another mead maker.

Uprising Meadworks is now open at 687 N. James Rd. on the east side. Partners Nate Rhone and Jenn Ganoe began developing the business almost two years ago and began the mead-making process in May. Those first batches now are bottled, on tap and ready to drink.

“It takes that long,” Ganoe told me.
