Next chapter coming for Akron's Urban Eats
By Dan Shingler
June 02, 2017

Akron's getting some new Urban Eats.

The little restaurant that could punch above its weight — and did — shut down in mid-May when its founders, chef Jason Scala and partner Liz Tyran, moved to Key West, Fla.

But it won't be closed for long. Landlord and downtown Akron developer Tony Troppe said he's already found some new Akronites to reopen the restaurant. He said that will happen sometime later in June.

Akron food trucks may get more freedom by next year — and restaurant owners aren’t happy about it
By Theresa Cottom
Beacon Journal staff writer

Every Wednesday afternoon, food truck offerings bring the sleepy corridor on Main Street to life during Cascade Cucina, where professionals from surrounding businesses converge on the green in Cascade Plaza to eat and socialize.

But for some surrounding restaurants, the event leaves business on Wednesday afternoons quieter than ever. Since the weekly city event began in May, Johnathan Hamad, the owner of Hamad’s on Main, said he’s lost hundreds of dollars every Wednesday to the competition directly across the street.

http://www.ohio.com/news/local/akron-food-trucks-may-get-more-freedom-by-next-year-and-restaurant-owners-aren-t-happy-about-it-1.778674

“I’m all for new businesses, but Akron in general already has enough restaurants,” Hamad said.

/\/\/\
And yet he just opened a new place downtown.  :wtf:

Local food trucks are finding new avenues
July 16, 2017 Updated 3 days ago
 By JENNIFER KARPUS-ROMAIN

Food trucks are again lining up in downtown Akron throughout the summer for the city's Cascade Cucina event on Wednesdays.

While that no doubt brings delight to food lovers and the business operators alike, street events only tell part of the story as an increasing number of mobile food operations see private events as a big source of income.

By Rick Armon

Missing Falls Brewery really will be missing a falls.

The brewery once slated to open in Munroe Falls is shifting gears and will now be located in the giant Canal Place complex in downtown Akron.

It also will be a lot bigger than first envisioned.

Missing Falls came onto the local scene in late 2015, with plans to open in a small shop at 10 N. Main St. in Munroe Falls.

These guys are really starting off on a pretty big scale - nothing in the story let on about how much brewing experience they have between them. That's a lot of space and equipment for a start-up.

It may work out though - since R. Shea is also putting a production brewery at Canal Place, it could be the start of a little brewery district near downtown. It will be interesting to see if, over time, they can get another one down there - or maybe talk an existing out-of-state brewer to expand there, too.

They have been brewing at setting up at local events for a couple years. Nothing commercial that I know of.

This Akron coffee shop is percolating mightily.

When the new Whole Foods Market 365 opens Sept. 14 on the city’s west side, Akron’s Artisan Coffee Shop will have a coffee bar inside.

Also, we bring you news about a change in Portage Lakes scheduled for early next month: Prime 93 in New Franklin — the former Anthe’s — will become Bricco Prime.

Ohio Brewing Co. leaving Akron for Cuyahoga Falls;
Updated on October 23, 2017 at  1:15 PM Posted on October 23, 2017 at  1:14 PM
By Marc Bona, cleveland.com

AKRON, Ohio - Chris Verich's wanderlust spirit has struck again: Ohio Brewing Co. is moving to Cuyahoga Falls to allow for increased distribution, and the brewery has planned a customer-appreciation party for Saturday, Oct. 28, to say thanks and farewell.
But craft-beer fans in the area shouldn't fret too much: The new tenant will maintain a strong emphasis on craft beer and will look at brewing down the line.

I think they had a deal in place before they moved. Barmacy is going in. Probably going to be worse unfortunately.

Lock 15 Brewing plans to be destination in Akron
Published: February 20, 2018 - 1:41 PM | Updated: February 20, 2018 - 4:00 PM
 By Rick Armon

Joe Karpinski and Colin Cook figure they have the perfect destination spot for a brewpub.

Their upcoming Lock 15 Brewing Co. – located at 21 W. North St. in Akron on the bottom floor of the Cascade Lofts building – is just steps away from the recreational Towpath Trail. And, as you might expect, it’s also just stroll from lock 15 along the Ohio & Erie Canal and the historic Mustill Store.

Thirsty Dog opens new Taphouse; Medina Beer Fest set; Girl Scout cookie-beer pairing
Published: March 6, 2018 - 6:25 PM | Updated: March 7, 2018 - 8:41 AM

Remarkably, no customers have ever been run over by a forklift at Thirsty Dog Brewing Co.

Before you laugh, it’s not that far out of the realm of possibility.

The Thirsty Dog tasting room is smack in the middle of the production brewery and a forklift sometimes beeps on by the bar.

Akron Dish: Opening dates for City Barbeque, Pick’s at PLX; tastes of Portland; West African, German dinners
Published: April 3, 2018 - 6:39 PM | Updated: April 4, 2018 - 2:28 PM

I have a full plate after a week off that included some feasting in Portland, Ore., considered one of the country’s best food cities.

I didn’t go there to graze; it was a trip with my hubby (retired Beacon Journal reporter Jim Carney) to see family. But ya gotta eat, and when in Portland, do what the Portlandians do — eat good food. More on this later.

Akron's Lock 15 Brewing Co. aims to open in June in historical, natural setting
Updated Apr 25; Posted Apr 25
by Marc Bona, cleveland.com

AKRON, Ohio - A strong sense of history is fueling Lock 15 Brewing Co., which plans to open in Akron this summer.
Lock 15 Brewing Co.

The brewery, in the shadow of the Y Bridge, is in the Cascade Valley Metro Park. It's a mix of old, new and nature: Trails wind through the area and its montage of historic buildings, rushing water and electrical towers. Soon, Colin Cook's vision and restaurant background, Tony Troppe's development acumen and Joe Karpinski's brewing know-how will converge to open one of Akron's newest breweries.
