Is that white rapper with the I-71 tattoo still going?  Or did he move back in with his mom?

Machine Gun Kelley has festival dates and a supporting slot on a Fall Out Boy tour coming up.   He was also just cast for the roll of Tommy Lee in the Motley Crue "The Dirt" movie being produced by Netflix.   I hate to say it, but the kid has a nice little career forming.

Anyone remember him getting arrested for starting a flash mob at southpark mall in Strongsville? I think that was his big breakout stunt. Pretty funny since his whole shtik is of a hard dude. Good for him though, has more money than me.

CLE's music scene is 100x better. After all, they have the Rock Hall and they're the birth place of Rock and Roll!

Is that white rapper with the I-71 tattoo still going?  Or did he move back in with his mom?

Score one for gatekeeping and the A&R men of the past.

I think it's actually harder than ever to get "discovered" now.  If you weren't on the Disney Channel as a kid or didn't have some sort of video go viral, you're doomed.  There is no mystery anymore, no urban legends.  Bands can't possibly have a mystique when you can look up the individual members on Facebook and see them at their cousin's First Communion cookout.

I remember the magical outlaw years of the internet, say 2000-2004, after AOL died off but MySpace and Facebook hadn't hit. Everyone was just an e-mail address. Bands got to be really mysterious if they chose since the only channels were basically a website (which someone had to make) and an mp3.com page. One genre that does get to be mysterious is Synthwave since many of the acts exist only on YouTube (with only art as the visual) and Soundclound/Bandcamp. I've seen one picture of the Lazerhawk guy ever.

Keith Richards sez Taylor Swift's music sucks.  Because it does:

Has anyone run into these young musicians who try to make arguments for Swift, Lady Gaga, Bieber, etc.?  Sorry, they're all rehashes and they their music sucks.

Personally, I don't see how you could put Bieber in the same sentence as Swift and Gaga, but I'm not going to try to convince you because I can tell you feel strongly about this.

Gaga did a Led Zeppelin cover.

Obviously this was before she was Gaga and put through the MK Ultra program / illuminati mind control and whatnot. Regardless, she's the real deal, imho. I like her. She's a good singer, dancer and can play instruments. I'm sure she writes at least a lot of her own music.

Swift and Bieber are obviously garbage.

I agree with you about Gaga and Bieber, you are wrong about Swift. You may not be into blonde girls singing country songs about endless breakups, but she's the real deal too. She's a tremendous songwriter, writes all her own stuff, and also plays instruments. I'm not crazy about her latest album, but I enjoyed most of her first two pop albums too.

Girl-pop is so much better today with Gaga and Swift than it was when I was growing up during the Britney Spears era.

Yeah, I first heard this song late at night on WSM 650AM when I lived in Nashville about 20 years ago.  It is hilarious!  That station still played all of the old country music, all of the time.

the latest singing sensation in the subway is a group called Blac Rabbit, twin brothers who do Beatles songs (not bad considering the atrocious acoustics)

New favorite song right now (the lyrics are fine but the video is probably NSFW because of the violence):

i saw an acoustic show by david j recently. that would be david j haskins of bauhaus/love&rockets aka the goth father himself. just him and his guitar. there were like 40 ppl in the house at this intimate brooklyn venue and i was probably the only non-musician. in the middle of his set he talked about taylor swift and played her song new years day. he said you can tell if a pop song is a great song after you strip the production gloss off of it and see it for what it is. musicians know musicians.

It takes a musician to tell you that Black Sabbath's "Children of the Grave" and Blondie's "Call Me" are actually the same song. If you know how to play one you know the other.

Wow, this is so lame.  This guy goes on tour and talks about seeing some people grilling on the Lake Erie waterfront.

No drugs, no brushes with the law, no fights.  Talks about coffee.  Yeah, I'm sure this band's music is pretty damn lame.

I looked them up.  Yep, pretty weak.  We're all just wondering who's tagging the singer.

A professional drummer posts 90 minutes of practice:

This guy is a little annoying but he has a point.  A lot of musicians, after an initial period of taking formal lessons, just practice songs they like, and so don't get any better.  I started playing drums after a 10+ year hiatus a year ago and I barely practice songs or beats.  I just run through drills for like 45 minutes, play one weak Buddy Rich imitation for about 6 minutes, then call it a night.

Practicing on your own as a drummer seems like it's completely different than it is as a guitarist, piano player etc. I imagine that just playing along with a Motley Crue song or with Perfect Strangers by Deep Purple isn't going to get you very far once you've been playing for a little while, whereas playing along with the record is very important for a guitar or bass player as practice in all stages of their career.

I remember a drummer telling me "I don't need to practice that song" in the week before we played it out. He was right.

The difference between me and most of the hacks out there is that I was introduced to high-level small combo jazz at the tender age of 15 or 16. I watched those guys at the Blue Wisp when I was 15-16 and I was like I'm never going to be able to do that.  So I didn't waste my time trying to get that good because I wasn't ever going to get that good and there's no money in it even if you do get that good.

I remember going to that place as a teenager and hearing this hot blast...and the band literally didn't get paid.  The guys got $10 if they were lucky.  You literally made WAY more money just pouring drinks at that place:

i saw mbv last night at the hammerstein.

i was close to the front in the middle. the traditional ‘you made me realise’ finale holocaust section is really something else. i dk how to describe it exactly, the video below certainly doesnt do it justice, but its like a long melodic white noise section, until they kick back in to close out the otherwise catchy song. its very physical, it waves into your body and the hair on my arms and legs stood up. its kind of like a live rocket launch at cape canaveral in florida, if you have ever experienced that, except instead of momentary it goes on. ours was for like 15min, but i believe the mbv record is 28min of white noise bliss. needless to say, you need earplugs during the show.

They're ghosts now. But I've been loving this song lately, a track that's been sorta hiding in plain sight of me for 30 years.

It starts off with a very (very) Byrdseque riff, you have to dig that distinct Rickenbacker sound. Dual Rickenbacker's, now that's like cheating. It's a beautiful and familiar ring. But then something gradually happens that's so cool, the song gracefully exits the 1960's and takes on a life of its own. It becomes a kind of a slackerish and edgy rock and roll song that's, dare I say, unique for its time.

Vocally Tom Petty has historically mimicked either Roger McGuinn (again, Byrds!) or Bob Dylan. He's not the only one guilty of this obviously. But on "Waiting" his voice sounds distinctly to me like Tom Petty. Plus the lead vocal melody is simply outstanding, it just flows effortlessly. Petty's voice is doing nearly all the heavy lifting too. I'm not hearing too much background vocals at all. The lyrics are straightforward and it all just seems to fit.

Finally, I really enjoy this cheesy video. Here is a band with great chemistry, that's clearly not sick of each other yet, about to hit their stride. It's a fun thing to watch.

^ aw yeah, that is from the hard promises album, the only tp record i ever owned. i was never a fan, not that i disliked tp, they just got by me i guess, but i really loved one tp song, kings road, and it was on that album so i bought it. its still the only tp song that does anything for me.

i just went to see these goddesses, oshun, at moma of all places. i really like them, they are at the forefront of an afrofuturism hiphop revival, which is great, and i hope they keep growing and go far. if you like older stuff like de la soul and tlc waterfalls u might like them.

i took this at their soundcheck and insta gouache-d it:

Ooh - the sniffle at 4:27:

This guy was always a drumming monster.  That band had two average guitar players, a terrible bassist, and then the best guy in town on drums.  The guy is lucky to still be functioning at age 50~ after decades of sniffling.
