Get a peek inside Cameron Mitchell's new Short North deli-inspired restaurant

Cameron Mitchell Restaurants’ new deli-inspired eatery will serve up both the traditional and the non-traditional.

Harvey & Ed’s opens at 698 N. High St. in the Short North June 12 and while it’ll have a counter where customers can take away a platter of smoked fish or a pound of pastrami, it’ll also have the sit-down full-service atmosphere that is a hallmark of Mitchell’s restaurants.

“There’s nothing like this in our portfolio,” General Manager Jill Armstrong told me on Thursday. “This exists, but there’s nothing like it in the market. It’s deli-inspired. It’s very East Coast.”

Short North White Castle Reopens Today

After being closed for nearly two years, the brand new White Castle reopens today in the Short North, with a unique drive-thru experience and exclusive menu items. Sitting at 965 N. High St., it’s part of the greater Castle Development by Borror Properties, an eight-story building complete with a combined 23,000 square feet of retail and office space.

“We’ve been at that site since 1968,” says White Castle VP Jamie Richardson, “so to be reopening in our 50th year is great.”

It’s the week of re-openings, with the latest being Planks Bier Garten in German Village. In a post on Facebook, Planks announced that they’d open their doors once again on Sunday, June 17.

New Local Restaurant Brekkie Shack Headed for Grandview Yard

A new local restaurant concept is coming to Grandview Yard, along with a few other tenants announced today. Brekkie Shack, owned by sisters and Columbus natives Lisa and Lindsey Rusch, will open in late summer at 1060 Yard St., in the new Manchester building.

“Growing up in Columbus, we knew we wanted to bring something to the area that didn’t previously exist,” Lisa says. “This is the ideal community for our casual-cool restaurant experience, and Grandview Yard was the perfect place to start our business…”

New menu, new name for Clintonville Greek restaurant

The owner of six local Greek eateries is streamlining his marketing and his menu.

Ferdinand Cela rebranded and remodeled one of his oldest restaurants, the Acropolis Gyro Palace at 5328 N. High St. in Clintonville as Greek Express.

“I felt a little sad,” he wrote in an email. “But I did it for marketing purposes.”

Inside the new Mikey's Late Night Slice: a secret bar, Pizza Hut and Vigo the Carpathian

Mikey’s Late Night Slice is growing up – sort of.

The Columbus pizza purveyor is in year nine of business, having started with a small walk-up window in the Short North, grown through food trucks and concession stands, and expanded into full bars and restaurants of its own.

Its newest addition – across from the Greater Columbus Convention Center at 457 N. High St., part of the old Yankee Trader building – represents a step forward in business maturity, though Mikey’s hasn’t lost the sense of humor that helped build the brand.

“This is the accumulation of nine years of work,” co-founder Mikey Sorboro told me. “This is what we want to build more of.”

It's gratifying that Bon Appetit is catching on to the culinary wonders of the Saraga International Grocery Store at 1265 Morse Road - particularly the Nepali dumpling restaurant Momo Ghar that is located within the store.  Saraga and many other immigrant-owned business in the Morse Road corridor have been mentioned here at UO in the Business section back in 2010 - when researchers from Ohio Wesleyan University coined the term "immigrantification" to describe how older strip centers in this area have been revitalized by businesses started by first- and second-generation immigrants.

It was also eye-opening to see that the Bon Appetit writer also considers Morse Road to be "on the outskirts of Columbus"(!)

https://www.bonappetit.com/story/saraga-international-grocery-store-dreams

From the Bon Appetit article:  "Saraga is the International Grocery Store of My Dreams.  In a former Toys “R” Us, you can buy Nepali dumplings, get your eyebrows threaded, and pick up merguez sausages . . . on the outskirts of Columbus, Ohio."

First Look: Pecan Penny’s Opening Next Week

The time is nigh for barbecue lovers to hit Pecan Penny’s, the latest restaurant and bar from the group behind the Walrus and Olde Towne Tavern. Occupying the building that was the Ray Johnson Seafood Market for nearly a century, Pecan Penny’s will start serving up central Texas-style barbecue on Friday, June 29.

The transformation took nearly a year, but they managed to achieve the clean, simple look they were aiming for, says co-owner Kevin Burns.

RAM Restaurant & Brewery Closes Short North Location

After less than two years in the Short North, RAM Restaurant & Brewery closed its doors permanently on June 18. A RAM employee confirmed the closure earlier today, though no reason was given. The restaurant’s Dublin location will remain open.

RAM officially opened its doors on Halloween in 2016, the Seattle-based company’s first break into the Columbus market. Occupying two floors and 9,000 square feet of space at 906 N. High St., the Short North RAM offered a downstairs brewpub focused specifically on beers, as well as an upstairs restaurant and full bar with a rooftop patio.

^^ Were you thinking this was that former Wendy's in the two-story building at the corner of Spring & High in downtown.  This is a new building completed two years ago at 1st & High in the Short North.  Previously there was a suburban-style Donatos on the property.

^ I did wonder if you were referring to that old two-story downtown Wendy's location.  The RAM exterior kind of reminds me of the way that building looks now (after another restaurant renovated the building).

Kind of strange that the RAM Restaurant & Brewery closed its Short North location but kept its Dublin Bridge Street location open.  Makes you wonder if the on-going streetscape construction in the Short North was the reason.

The former Columbus Brewing Co. restaurant has chosen its new name

A bustling Brewery District restaurant is going through some changes — though its fans shouldn’t be too worried.

Oxbow on Short will be the new name of what's now the CBC Restaurant (and more colloquially Columbus Brewing Co.) at 525 Short St. The restaurant will close after July 4 for renovations and reopen at a to-be-determined date with a refreshed look and that new moniker.

Owners Doug Griggs and Mike Campbell remain the same. They also own Milestone 229 downtown.

Harvest: Bigger menu in Bexley, Grandview coming soon

The name Harvest Pizzeria is the same, but that doesn’t mean the menu is.

Grow Restaurants opened its fifth restaurant under that moniker at 2376 E. Main St. in Bexley last week and while the core pizzas and other assorted items such as the pimento cheese remain the same, owner Chris Crader lets the chef at each of those restaurants bring their own touches to the menu.

In Bexley, that means some new salads, (such the Commons, which has pulled chicken and hot-pickled carrots among its ingredients) and sandwiches (such as a grilled trout or whitefish salad) are included. Entrees include a steak, half chicken and a daily fish selection. Starters include a charcuterie board and small plates such as poke tuna and a crab roll.

More on CBC Restaurant changes, including a longer time line

CBC Restaurant is getting a small stay of rebranding.

The 20-plus-year old Brewery District restaurant, known first as Columbus Brewing Co., announced on Monday that it will rename and remodel this summer to become Oxbow on Short. The initial plan was to close after July 4, but the owners now will wait through the summer, instead deciding to close Aug. 31 for the rebrand and renovation.

“We don’t want to rush it,” General Manager Rusty Scarberry told me. “We want to invest time to make every thing right. We have an opportunity here to create a new concept, our own identity.”

Growing soup-and-salad brand adding in Columbus

Where once there were burgers and shakes, there now are salads and grain bowls.

Northstar owners bring Mediterranean-inspired restaurant to Bexley

Bexley is sprouting a trio of Central Ohio-grown food and wine establishments.

First up is Brassica, which opened last week at 2212 E. Main St. in a space previously occupied by a Cosi restaurant. It’s the second Brassica for Organic Trails Cafe LLC, the Columbus restaurant company started by Kevin Malhame, his wife, Katy Malhame, and brother Darren Malhame.

The first opened in the Short North in 2015. A third is under construction in Upper Arlington at 1442 W. Lane Ave.

Short North Original Philco to Open Second Location in German Village

After putting out a slew of unique restaurants and bars, including Club 185, The Rossi, Little Palace and El Camino Inn, local restauranteurs Tina and Randy Corbin are ready for their first duplicate restaurant. Philco, which first opened in the Short North in 2013, will open a second location this fall in the former Happy Dragon building in German Village.

“German Village can really use a restaurant like this, with a great location, something that does breakfast, that’s low key, reasonably priced. A family type restaurant,” says Tina Corbin.

An Updated Mac’s Opens Tonight

The Mac’s: A Proper Pub makeover is almost ready for a public reveal. The Scottish bar and restaurant closed last month for renovations and a total menu overhaul. It’ll reopen for service on Thursday, June 28.

After 30 years in the Short North, co-owner Pat Melick said it was time for Mac’s to change with the neighborhood. What guests will find at the grand opening event is a restaurant that’s shaken its dive persona and taken on a more upscale feel featuring warm tones, wood paneling, and restored brick, all accented with a plaid motif.

Long-time Short North pub reopens with renewed emphasis on Scottish roots

A long-time Short North tavern has a new look and a re-commitment to its overseas origins.

Mac’s at 693 N. High St. is now subtitling itself as “a proper pub” after reopening last week.

A redesign returned the the former Mac's Cafe to its Scottish roots. That goes for the menu, too, which got a makeover with Scottish cuisine in mind, according Doug Sexton, a consultant working with Mac’s on the project.

Take a look inside Pecan Penny's – downtown's newest BBQ joint

The newest addition to downtown dining aims to please those looking for a bite at lunch or more of a night out.

Pecan Penny’s recently opened at 113 E. Main St. in the space once occupied by Ray Johnson’s Fish Market, which closed in 2006 after more than 30 years there. The 4,000-square-foot building has been vacant since.

“We’ve had our eye on it for at least six years,” said Kevin Burns, who is a partner with Brad Hobbs and Krista Hobbs in the Olde Towne Partners restaurant group.

First Look: Oshio Sushi Kitchen & Bar Opening This Week

A new sushi bar is opening soon in Grandview. The concept comes from the Kim family, who’ve given rise to other local restaurants like Mr. Sushi (Song Kim), Rishi Sushi Kitchen & Bar, Moshi Sushi Bar, and Pokébap (David Kim).

Oshio Sushi Kitchen & Bar, owned by Daniel Kim, will open this week inside the building once occupied by GoCupz, at 974 W. 5th Ave.

GoCupz closed quietly and abruptly in April, Kim says, and he was able to move in on May 1. They’ve since had a soft opening and are gearing up for a grand opening this Thursday, July 5.

The 1126 Sushi Bar & Restaurant Takes Over Old Parlor Room Space

After a year of vacancy, a new tenant has entered the old Parlor Room space at 1126 N. High St. in the Short North.

The 1126, a bar and restaurant serving up a sushi-centric menu, opened its doors last week, introducing its new offerings in a relatively unchanged building. Swensons looking at Polaris site between Ikea and TopGolf for restaurant

Swensons Drive-In is looking to join Ikea and TopGolf in the Polaris area.

The Akron-based burger chain has chosen a site next to the popular Swedish retailer for what would be its second Central Ohio location. The site at 2200 Ikea Way is also in the shadow of the upcoming TopGolf facility, which is expected to be a major draw when it opens this fall.

Swensons is seeking a parking variance for the Polaris site, which is on the Columbus City Council agenda for Monday evening. Swensons serves car-hop style – runners taking orders at your window and running them back out on a tray for customers in their cars – so it needs plenty of parking.
