Short North’s Branch Rebranded into Third Westies Location

Short North’s Branch, formerly known as Biscuit & Branch, has undergone another rebrand, this time as Westies Gastropub (under the same owners). The locally-based restaurant has two other locations in the area, in Clintonville and the Brewery District, and will open in the Short North on Friday, May 4.

Westies first opened in the Brewery District in 2014. Since then, says a press release, owner Tony Selimi has been looking to expand the brand, which finally happened in March with Westies’ Clintonville opening. With an “overwhelming response from the public and the success of both locations,” Branch is gone, and Westies now has expanded further into a third location at 685 N. High St.

Campus pizza restaurant Adriatico's moving a block away, adding wings and draft beer

No need to worry, Adriatico's-faithful. The pizza place won't be leaving Ohio State's campus anytime soon.

Adriatico’s New York Style Pizza, a campus staple, is moving just a block away because a university health sciences building will take over the space where the restaurant now is.

Adriatico’s is moving from that 1,046-square-foot space at 11th and Neil avenues to a 3,075-square-foot site at 10th and Neil avenues, which is a former Aveda salon.

Tio’s Tacos and Tequila Now Open Downtown

After months of construction, a new taco shop has opened up Downtown. Occupying the space once held by DeNOVO, Tio’s Tacos and Tequila has opened its doors at 201 S. High St.

Tio’s offers a diverse menu anchored by their house specialties, such as their steak vallarta, a grilled rib-eye steak stopped with grilled shrimp, onions, mushrooms and pineapple; their gordo especial, a grilled steak with poblano pepers, pico de gallo and shredded cheese; their enchiladas de lechuga, combining grilled chicken, peppers, onions, tomatoes, “Tio’s sauce,” queso fresco and avocado slices all inside four lettuce wraps; and much more.

The next new Condado will be opening in ...

Condado Tacos is adding another Central Ohio shop.

The Columbus-based taco eatery and bar is the latest to commit to Dublin’s Bridge Park as it continues its rapid expansion in Central Ohio and beyond. The company said it expects to open in September or October in that ever-expanding mixed-use project, which just added The Avenue Steak Tavern to its roster of restaurants last week.

https://www.columbusnavigator.com/the-blue-danube-is-closing-after-decades-of-service/

http://www.dispatch.com/business/20180507/thats-end-blue-danube-to-close-its-doors-on-fathers-day

The Blue Danube, a University-area hangout since 1940, will go dark June 17 as the landlord embarks on a major renovation of the building.  According to the media reports, the property owner, Margetis Investments, plans to take at least two months to renovate the space at 2349 N. High Street and replace it with something similar.

This would be the first time in 78 years that 'The Dube' was not open for business (an impressive run).  According to the Dispatch article, the restaurant got its name from the Hungarian couple who founded it.  The original owners sold it in 1947 to Tess Sicaris, who re-made it into the casual hangout that it remains today.

Sicaris hired three nephews to help him run the Blue Danube.  The lone remaining nephew, George Margetis, continued running the restaurant until 1995.  Margetis then sold the restaurant business to Bob Swaim, a customer of the Dube and former owner of Lane Avenue Travel.  Margetis retained ownership of the 2349 N. High Street building through Margetis Investments.  Margetis' son, Steve, now runs the family business.

Hopefully the Dube doesn't stay closed for long and re-opens as a refreshed version of an old classic.

Arena District eatery doing more than just cheesesteaks

Having cheesesteak in the name doesn’t just mean a Philadelphia influence.

Sandman’s Cheesesteak is broadening its menu with cheeseburgers and hot dogs, including the new Sandman Original Greek Coney Dog, which uses a family recipe coney sauce that goes back 100 years and hails from Buffalo, New York.

Poké Bros. Opening in Westerville, Debuting Expanded Menu

After opening their first two Ohio locations in 2016 and 2017, Poké Bros. will soon add its third regional location in three years, this one at 599 S. State St. in Westerville. Owner TJ Wellman said the new store’s grand opening would coincide with some menu changes that he hopes will appeal to a larger demographic, particularly families.

Along with Poké Bros.’ typical menu of poké bowls, salads and desserts, each of the restaurant’s locations will begin serving additional items, including hot sliders with chicken and brisket, beans, and coleslaw with pineapple. The chicken and brisket can be added to bowls, too.

Viiza Opens Downtown, Offering Pizza in a Cone

Offering a “revolutionary approach” to pizza, Brooklyn-based restaurant Viiza opened the doors of its first Ohio location on Wednesday, May 16. Located Downtown at 4 E. Broad St., Viiza’s main offering is pizza in a cone, designed for on-the-go eaters.

Viiza has more than a dozen of its own signature pizza cones to choose from, categorized into two types: classic and Asian. The former includes a Hawaiian cone with pineapple, onion, and sausage; a vegetarian option with mushrooms, brocooli, olives, onion, and peppers; and a spicy cone with pepperoni, onion, corn, jalapeńos, and banana peppers, among others. The Asian varieties include a Peking duck cone; a spicy lobster cone; and a seafood deluxe cone that’s packed with shrimp, squid, crab stick, pepper and corn.

Two Local Businesses Team Up to Open New Café in Franklinton

A new partnership has formed between two Downtown neighbors. One Line Coffee, a roaster with roots in Heath, Ohio and cafés in the Short North and on Capitol Square, and MMELO, a boutique confectionary neighboring the North Market, are bringing a collaborative experience to Franklinton by next January.

One Line Coffee & MMELO will open on the corner of Rich and McDowell streets in the River & Rich development, currently under construction. Their 2,500 store allows enough room for MMELO to have their own production space, a much-needed alternative to their shared kitchen at ECDI. That “maker space” will supply the café with MMELO’s unique confections, which include gourmet marshmmelos, teacakes and chocolates. But, MMELO co-owner Paul Freeth and OLC’s Managing Partner for Retail Mick Evans said the partnership will go beyond that and into exploratory recipes that use flavor profiles from both businesses.

Caught this promo of a recent USA Today article about the local coffee scene in Columbus from today's #SaveTheCrew twitter feed (see that Crew flag below in the background at downtown's Café Brioso).  It was a decent article that mentioned older established local places Café Brioso and Stauf’s Coffee Roasters, as well as local newcomers One Line Coffee and Mission Coffee Co.:

http://www.dispatch.com/business/20180521/white-castles-new-ohio-state-area-location-offers-unique-touches

The Dispatch had an article about a new White Castle opening today across from Ohio State.  This two-story White Caste restaurant at 2106 N. High Street - just south of Lane Avenue and across from OSU's North Residential Dorms - is located in a renovated Radio Shack location.  The larger building in the background of the above photo is the five-story Wilson Place development - see more about Wilson Place in this development thread - one of five university-area private luxo-dorm projects being finished for the upcoming Fall semester.

According to the article, this is the first time in the company's 82-year history in Columbus that White Castle has a presence in the Ohio State University campus area(!)

That's somewhat in the area (if you don't mind trekking north about a 1/2 mile from the north dorms or a 1 mile from the south dorms).  But I seriously couldn't believe that this was the first White Castle to be located across from the main campus.  White Castle and college students should go together like PB&J!

That would explain the Dube's facebook post about this early closing reported in the CU article:  “Due to some extreme, and very unfortunate, circumstances beyond our control, our staff was cut to a number that will be unable to manage operations any further.”

German Village's destination deli adding a new restaurant

A classic Columbus food name is expanding.

Katzinger’s Delicatessen will add a third deli in the fall at 7154 Muirfield Drive in Dublin. It’ll be the first, but possibly not the last new addition for the 34-year-old brand, which was founded by Diane Warren in German Village in 1984 and acquired by Columbus-based restaurant group CityBrands in 2016.

“We’ve spent the last two years getting acclimated,” CityBrands President Tim Rollins told me. “Our plans are to get this one open, see how it does, work out the kinks.”

A hopeful update from today's Dispatch about the future of The Dube:

Landlord reveals details for future Blue Danube

The Blue Danube will reopen under new ownership, possibly as early as fall.  But that’s about all that’s certain at this point.

Other details are hazy, such as whether the name Blue Danube will remain, said Steve Margetis, whose extended family has owned the iconic restaurant since the 1940s.  “I would love to open up before football season,” Margetis said. “It would be amazing if I could, but I don’t think I can.”

Margetis said he and his cousin, Jimmy Sicaris, plan to sink an estimated $1 million into a complete overhaul of the building at 2439 N. High Street in the University District.  A new operator for the restaurant has been identified, but Margetis wouldn’t disclose the name because a lease hasn’t been signed.

It isn’t clear just who has the naming rights to the Blue Danube, also known as the ’Dube.  Margetis said it is his intention, if he can keep the name, to use it in some form when the restaurant emerges from the restoration project.  Meanwhile, the interior is going to be completely gutted and new windows will be added to the building.  The exterior will change, too - it will have a brick or sandstone facade, a look similar to the original Blue Danube that opened in 1940.

Roosevelt Coffeehouse Announces Roasting Facility Coming This Summer

After three years of serving up One Line and Stumptown coffees, The Roosevelt Coffeehouse will soon offer a brand of its own. The coffee shop and nonprofit social enterprise, which first opened Downtown on Long Street back in 2015, will add a roasting facility in Franklinton this summer, located at 567 W. Broad St.

Right next door to Defining Skin Tattoo, Roosevelt’s roasting facility will occupy 1,500 square feet of warehouse space at the back of a 6,000 square foot building (the other tenant is unknown). At least for the time being, the space will be dedicated to production and distribution, though Roosevelt founder Kenny Sipes said there’s the potential for more. Conveniently, their location puts them near Defining Skin’s new bar and event space, where Sipes hopes to host some collaborative events.

Swensons update: One restaurant moving forward, no commitments beyond that

Columbus’ first Swensons Drive-In could open in the fall.

The beloved Akron-based burger chain is waiting on feedback from the city of Columbus on its plans for 7490 Sawmill Rd. near Dublin. The development plan for the site was approved in December.

Swensons wants to convert a former FirstMerit Corp. bank into a restaurant and is waiting to hear back from the city on its plans, Ron Dee, vice president of real estate, told me.

“Everything is contingent on the city,” he said, though he noted the hope is to be open by fall, possibly October.

Confirming rumors Columbus Business First reported in April, the cultishly popular burger chain said Tuesday it will add a restaurant at Easton Town Center for its first location in the region.

It expects to open in early 2019. The 3,523-square foot restaurant will feature an outdoor patio and seating for more than 100 guests. An exact address wasn't given.

The picture from the NBC article shows it at the current Tesla showroom; the former McDonald's. An addition, Tesla move, or just a stock photo?
