Damon's appears to have a buyer

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Damon's Grill could become the third central Ohio restaurant chain in less than a week to have a new out-of-town owner.

Or maybe not.

Response to 'Dispatch' story
Damon's says businessman isn't buying

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The owner of Damon's Grill said the restaurant chain will not be sold to a Pittsburgh businessman who recently agreed to buy Max & Erma's.  In a story published Thursday, sources told The Dispatch that Damon's was close to being bought by Gary Reinert Sr.  The sources were familiar with the situation but did not want to be named because they're not authorized to speak for the company.  But William Burk, Damon's chairman, said the information was wrong.

Trio of restaurant veterans filling 'void' for Italian dining in Clintonville

http://columbus.bizjournals.com/columbus/stories/2008/05/12/newscolumn1.html?b=1210564800^1633307

The restaurant replacing the R Bar in Clintonville doesn't have a name yet, but it has three known names backing it.

George Tanchevski, owner of five Aladdin's Eatery restaurants; Giuseppe Mangano, owner of Giuseppe's Ritrovo in Bexley; and John Skaggs, former chef of RJ Snappers and the Northstar Cafe, hope to open their Italian-inspired eatery by month-end.

Taverns fuel owner's love: civic involvement

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The thing about Elizabeth Lessner is, she cares.  And when she cares, she acts.  "What I've always sought is the power to cause change," said Lessner, 34.  Lessner has three successful restaurants: She started with Betty's Fine Food and Spirits in 2001, and followed up with the Surly Girl Saloon in 2005 and the Tip Top Kitchen and Cocktails in 2007.  She just took possession of the former Queen Bee Restaurant, 248 S. 4th St., and plans to turn it into Dirty Frank's Hot Dogs by mid-July.

And she's putting together the Ohioanna All-Star Market, an Ohio-only convenience store that is expected to open later this year two doors north of the Surly Girl in the Short North.  "Liz's not old and traditional; she thinks outside the box," said Randy Sokol of RCI Restaurant Consultants Inc.  "And her passion is to do the right thing in her restaurants and in the community.

Dirty Frank's Hot Dogs opening downtown in July

Dirty Frank's Hot Dogs, a casual hot doggery and neighborhood bar is set to open mid-July in Downtown Columbus, Ohio bringing another fun and affordable lunch option to downtown workers and dwellers. Partners Elizabeth Lessner and Harold LaRue look to bring quality hot dogs and some whimsical sizzle to downtown Columbus.

"Columbus has hot dog envy. People visit New York and Chicago and eat at some of the finest restaurants in the world but come back raving about the hot dogs," says Lessner, current CEO of Betty's, Surly Girl Saloon and Tip Top Kitchen and native of Chicago, famed for their outstanding "slap your forehead" scrumptious red hots.

Dirty Franks will feature delicious all-beef Vienna franks, Polish sausages, Kielbasa and Tofu dogs served in steamed poppy seed buns topped with fresh ingredients prepared to order. Sides will include Corn on the Cob with Chipotle Butter, Sriracha Cole Slaw, Roasted Sport Pepper Mac 'n Cheese, India Pale Ale Dredged Onion Rings, and Hot Dog Cornbread. Salads and a few casserole dishes will also be available.

To complement your dog, locally brewed Frostop Root Beer on draught, plenty of Pabst Blue Ribbon and the house specialty drink, Dirty Frank's Bloody Mary which contains Sport-Pepper Infused Vodka with Celery Seed Bloody Mary mix.

OSU chef makes shift to place of his own near Clintonville

Bill Glover is ready to go public after nearly six years of serving private diners.

Glover, most recently executive chef of the Faculty Club at Ohio State University, is venturing out on his own with the Sage American Bistro, expected to open June 10 at 2653 N. High St., south of Clintonville in a building formerly occupied by the Kitchen Lounge.

Cleveland's Garage coming to Columbus' Arena District

Jeff Allison knows hundreds of eager eaters and drinkers regularly walk past the building where he is opening his bar. The trick is getting them inside, something two previous bars have been unable to do.

Recipes for success lie in Latin American origins
Thursday, May 29, 2008
BY BILL EICHENBERGER
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

If you insist on knowing what everything is on your plate, perhaps you had better pass up El Arepazo Latin Grill.  The proprietor, Carlos Gutierrez, isn't trying to offend anyone; he just -- well, as he put it:

"With all due respect," the entrepreneur said recently after closing the Pearl Street shop for the afternoon, "we go out of our way not to Americanize our food."

With good reason.  "I use almost all my mom's recipes," he said of Victoria Gutierrez, formerly of Venezuela and currently of Spain.

Del Mar's filling a niche with fish tacos
Tuesday, June 3, 2008
BY BILL CHRONISTER
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Fish tacos are invading central Ohio.  They established a beachhead in Canal Winchester on Thursday and they're expected to pop up in New Albany in July.  By the end of summer, Zanesville, Groveport and perhaps Circleville might be feasting on Del Mar's Baja Mexican fast-casual fare.

Greg Walker, co-developer for the region with Tarek Monowar, said he expects to have at least eight more Del Mar's open across Ohio by the end of the year.

The store is based on the Subway and Chipotle model, with food made to order as customers walk along an assembly line.  The highest-priced individual items are Mondo Burritos, at $5.49, with platters including rice and refried black beans, pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole for $5.99.

Pie-maker gets his pizza hand ready again
Wednesday, June 4, 2008

This Week News

Bill Yerkes is at it again.  After a brief hiatus from making traditional Napoli-style pizzas, Yerkes is again ready to put a pie in your face.

Yerkes is subletting Eleni-Christina Bakery in the evenings for his latest pizza enterprise, bonoTOGO (as in “to go”) — just in time for the Gallery Hop on Saturday.  Although the place’s address is 641 N. High St., the storefront actually faces Russell Street, about 60 feet west of the main drag.

Former High Street Wendy's getting Latin makeover
Friday, June 13, 2008
by Dan Eaton
Business First of Columbus

Sam Horner told Columbus Business First when he and his father bought the old Wendy's on High Street in Columbus two years ago that he hoped it could be turned into a restaurant with a Due Amici feel.  He'll get his wish.

Horner, a real estate appraiser, is teaming up with Jeff Mathes, the owner of Due Amici in the city, to open a Latin eatery there by fall.  Mathes said Barrio will cater to the same high-end casual crowd as Due Amici, his Italian restaurant on Gay Street, but with a South American flair.

Donatos upgrading area restaurants
Thursday, June 19, 2008
By Monique Curet
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Donatos will spend $5 million this year to convert company-owned stores in central Ohio to its new look.  The new design features an open kitchen, which allows employees to greet customers right away, and a smaller dining area.  The design is a departure from the larger restaurants the company was building when it was under the ownership of McDonald’s Corp., which sold Donatos back to the founding family in late 2003.  Donatos has 51 company-owned stores in central Ohio, and a handful already have been upgraded.

Five Guys planning 20 local restaurants

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

A burger joint known for its pared-down menu and rave reviews plans to open 20 restaurants in central Ohio in the next three or four years.  Five Guys Burgers and Fries offers just four main menu items: burgers, hot dogs, veggie or grilled-cheese sandwiches and french fries. The restaurants have been included in the venerable Zagat food guides and have earned kudos in many other publications.

Deep Wood review at Columbus Alive
Already in Deep
By G.A. Benton
June 26, 2008

My evidence is paltry yet overwhelming.  But if my raw restaurant numbers are lacking — open two nights and six dishes tried — my cooked results were prodigiously delicious.  Aiming for an accommodating setting, DeepWood has heavily overhauled the former Abbracci space.  Now the place is bright and open, with lots of blond wood, windows overlooking the Greek Cathedral, a striking oak plank floor and a dramatic mid-room dome that integrates weight-bearing function with foresty form.  The dome is painted like the canopy of a great woodland tree, and it separates the tavern area from the dining room.
