The 60 story Massey Tower under construction without taking a lane of Yonge St. When will Columbus contractors figure this out?

This just in... Toronto is awesome.

The city shifts east: 290 hectares of "found" land unlocked with the remediation of the Don River. Now advancing with $1 billion in funding. https://t.co/v3IYJjphuU

Toronto is having a park boom and people are taking notice

Multiple new parks have opened in the past few weeks and Torontonians are flocking to them.

Well, Toronto has historically been terrible at parks so that is no surprise whatsoever.

Idk I think Centre Island, most of the lakefront, and Trinity Bellwoods are all pretty great.

Compared to other cities it's historic size, it is mediocre, at best. Sure, the Islands are nice, the lakefront was general terrible (Ontario Place alone is horrendous) but has improved, and Trinity Bellwoods can be found in small-town Ohio.  Toronto's main "grand" park, High Park, is fine but nothing of note.  It is clear Toronto needs better parks in order to reach another level of world-class stature.  American cities (and Montreal) are blessed to have had abundant riches in the late 19th/early 20th century when parks were made.

It doesn't matter how much development your city is seeing. It doesn't hold a candle to what Toronto is building to keep up with population growth.

In Metro Toronto, there are 68,638 housing units under construction right now. https://t.co/SnsnLS0uEq

Residential, no doubt. I think there's more commercial construction going on in the DC area than Toronto though. Capital One is just finishing their 600 ft. tower in Tysons and there is plenty of new office construction throughout the entire region.

Yeah, Seattle and DC probably eclipse Toronto in office construction.  Toronto is killing the residential tower game, though Panama City is probably the king of that, per capita, on this continent.  It's popping up out of nowhere...like a Latin Dubai.

for more comparison, sort of, there were 23,247 new units built in nyc in 2016. no idea about the metro. at least double no doubt. so likely still below metro toronto's booming se florida coast of the north. overall, there are 3.5M total residential units in the city.

Not everything in Toronto is 60-story apartment "box towers".....

This is a perfect example of a typical warehouse building that we're told has *no* heritage value. Restoration just takes...vision. #NewGem

A co-worker of mine, who is from Hawaii originally, recently took a vacation to a Chicago, Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa, and Toronto. He's an urban planner and works in historic preservation. I asked what his favorite and least favorite cities were, and without hesitation, he said his least favorite place of the trip was Toronto. He said it seemed incredibly sterile, and much of the city looked indistinguishable from other parts. By contrast, he loved Chicago, and said it felt like a much bigger and more interesting city.

I just thought this was interesting, given how much love Toronto seems to recieve here and on other urban fourms. I've also heard these same complaints from multiple people who have recently visited Toronto. Kind of a, "yeah, it's a big city, but it's just kind of bland and lacking in character." I must say, from photos I've seen of the place, I don't feel compelled to visit.

^100%! yes, Toronto is a big, dynamic place and all that, but with all of it's racial and ethnic diversity (and there's a lot, rivaling New York's), it's like everyone has bought into the same bland (as you put it) middle class lifestyle.

It's true. It does have alot of bland parts. That said the diversity is amazing, the city is pretty clean, and the city feels so much more safe than American cities.

I think Chicago is much more bland. I suppose there are a lot of same-y glass towers in Toronto but the neighborhoods are beautiful and incredibly lively.

Yeah, it's kinda weird hearing that Toronto is "bland" but Chicago isn't.  With that said, I can see both sides of the argument (both being bland / both not being bland).
