Ecuador plans a mile-high skyscraper near equator





Not far from Ecuador's capital, tourists flock to a line etched in the ground and straddle it so they've got one foot on either side of the equator.

A 100 foot obelisk marks the spot. Now, the provincial governor, thinking much bigger and grander, wants to build a mile-high skyscraper there.

Didn't the Mayans build something like this, too?  (Do the Ecuadorans intend to use it for similar purposes?)

Hey the architect is the same guy who did the Cleveland Museum of Art expansion:


A first draft model of the proposed new building more than twice that height has been done by Uruguayan architect Rafael Vinoly.

more info on the link below of this badly translated blog from ecuador. its supposed to start construction in january 2014 and be completed in 2017. however, it looks like they dont quite have the investors lined up yet so who knows?
