The largest Russian military exercise since the Cold War? In concert with China? Oh, good.....   :(

Russia is rehearsing for a global war, and giving early warning to the West

What are we to make of Russia's Vostok (East)-2018 exercise? From September 11-15, Russia's Far East will host Vostok-2018, the largest Russian military exercise since Zapad (West)-1981.

According to Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, this latest exercise will engage some 300,000 Russian troops, over 1,000 aircraft, the Pacific and Northern Fleets, the entire Airborne forces, including 30 aircraft and fixed-wing helicopters, and Mongolian and Chinese troops.

These forces will allegedly exercise in something approaching real combat conditions. Observers have naturally focused on the exercise's size and scope, and on China's participation, but there are also other dimensions.

Clearly Russia is rehearsing a large-scale war. But since Russia is not demobilising in the West against NATO and the Ukraine, Vostok-2018 will likely stress and thus test Russia's steadily developing capability for mobilising the entire panoply of reservists and multiple militaries at its disposal, along with the civil administration.

Russian Gen. Valery Gerasimov: "Nothing sensational" about Vostok-2018 war games with China, it's just 300K troops, 1K aircraft, 36K vehicles, 80 vessels testing their combat readiness.
https://twitter.com/Lucian_Kim/status/1037674306636001280

Valery Gerasimov: "I'd like to emphasize that the maneuvers are not directed against other countries and are in line with our military doctrine, which is defensive."

Asked about scale of Vostok-2018 exercises, Gen. Gerasimov says it's part of a "yearly cycle" of exercises; no other subtext.

Hailing "traditional Russian adherence to principles of predictability, good will and openness," Gen. Alexander Fomin says 91 observers from 57 countries confirmed for Vostok-2018.

Enjoy with a heaping serving of salt. Gerasimov qualified many of these numbers by saying "up to," and no outside observers will be at multiple ranges to count.

One of the most reliable signs that an aggressor is about to launch a new attack is his replacement of local people who might resist his effort with carefully selected outsiders who can be counted on to support or at least not actively oppose any new aggression. According to people in the Donbas with whom US-based Russian journalist Kseniya Kirillova has spoken, that is exactly what has been happening in the days since the murder of Oleksandr Zakharchenko, the so-called “head of the DNR.” Her report should set off alarm bells in Kyiv. One Donbas resident speaking on condition of anonymity says that...

Associated Press has accepted a Russian demand to change an article that referred to the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany as 'former allies' who had 'carved up Poland' together. Russia argued there was never a formal alliance between them and AP accepted this https://t.co/JpCx9CTTzO

Reality....

Soviet Union:
-Signed a pact with Nazis
-Invaded Poland with Nazis
-Had victory parade with Nazis
-Signed German–Soviet Border & Commercial Agreement in 1940 to supply Nazis with war material
-Sent Hitler note of congrats for swift conquest of France

Russian Pussy Riot activist hospitalized in grave condition; poisoning suspected

Russian news reports say that a member of Russian punk protest group Pussy Riot has been hospitalized in grave condition for what could be a possible poisoning.

Ekho Moskvy radio and online news portal Meduza reported Wednesday that Pyotr Verzilov has been in emergency care since late Tuesday. They quoted a fellow Pussy Riot member, Veronika Nikulshina, as saying Verzilov's symptoms included losing his eyesight and ability to speak.
