Cleveland Museum of Art's opening of the East Wing is an important milestone in the expansion
by Steven Litt / Plain Dealer Art Critic
Sunday June 21, 2009

The floors are polished, the paintings are up, the labels are set and the lights are focused. The new galleries of the Cleveland Museum of Art's East Wing, wrapped in sawtooth facades of granite and marble stripes, are ready for the public.

Everyone from museum director Timothy Rub to security supervisor John Williams is poised for one thing: how Clevelanders react when the new wing opens Saturday. Trustees hope a positive response will help them raise the remaining $138 million needed to finish the $350 million project, which they consider vital to the city's future...

I agree with those last two quotes in bold.

CMA is an incredible jewel in Cleveland .. and not only to Cleveland, but to the rest of the US, for sure. It's definitely one of the best art museums I've ever been to, and I'm incredibly excited about this expansion/renovation project.

Now, if we could just get some steam behind MOCA .. :)

Cleveland Museum of Art OKs second phase of expansion, says it's raised over $200 million for construction

The Cleveland Museum of Art blew past a major milestone Monday on a 10-year, $350 million expansion and renovation it's calling the largest cultural project in Ohio history. The museum's board of trustees announced it has raised $204.5 million for construction since 2002 and voted unanimously to go ahead with the second and final phase needed to finish construction by 2012.

http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2008/06/cleveland_museum_of_art_oks_se.html

So I am assuming that another vote is needed because the endowment dropped in value?  It seemed from the above article last year that proceeding on Phase 2 was already a go.... errrr.... I mean a "hell yes!"

The west wing would be nice to have built, but I just really hope nothing happens to the plans for that atrium.  That was the key component of this whole expanstion IMO.

This project is definitely good for the Cleve, and I agree that this project will do more for the city than a championship.  This is an example of a perception changing project, which the city needs.

When the museum decides to ask residents, I will gladly contribute.

There's a little blurb in the NY Times Travel   section today about Cleveland and St. Louis:

Cleveland Museum of Art

Cleveland Museum of ArtBoth Cleveland and St. Louis have proven their dedication to the visual arts with the recent openings of new — and free — exhibition spaces.

Yesterday, the Cleveland Museum of Art opened the East Wing. the first of three new wings, all of which will add 200,000 square feet to the property when they are completed in 2012. The East Wing, made of granite and glass and designed by architect Rafael Viñoly, connects the museum’s original 1916 beaux-arts building and Marcel Breuer’s 1971 addition. It will provide the exhibition space for the museum’s modern and contemporary art collection, which includes paintings like “Marilyn x 100” by Andy Warhol, “La Vie” by Pablo Picasso, and “In the Waves” by Paul Gauguin (www.ClevelandArt.org).

And on July 1, a new two-block, three-acre sculpture garden called Citygarden will open in downtown St. Louis. A project of the City of St. Louis, which owns the land, and the Gateway Foundation, which provided the funding, the garden will feature two dozen works, including sculptures by Fernand Léger, Keith Haring, Aristide Maillol and Laura Ford. There will also be a 102-jet “spray plaza” that will emit colorful patterns and in which children may play. Citygarden will be within walking distance of the Gateway Arch and the Mississippi River.

It wasn't all that crowded, especially in the "older" part of the museum.  In fact, my family and I were the only people in the armor area.

I was in the museum from about 11-1:30pm, mostly in the east wing, so maybe it was a bit early for people.  It really is a wonderful area, and I can't wait until 2012!

I spent a good portion of the afternoon there yesterday.  Absolutely stunning.  Everything... just stunning.  There are no words to describe how excited I am for the atrium.  The place was jam packed yesterday by the way.  Great to see.

I was there later in the afternoon on Saturday, around 3:30ish, and it was crowded up until closing at 5.

McCleveland sums up my thoughts fairly accurately...it was indeed stunning.

Cleveland Museum’s New Wing Makes the Case for Further Expansion
By Steven Litt
Published: July 1, 2009

CLEVELAND—Few architects would tell a potential client to rip down half of a house before remodeling and building an addition.

But that’s exactly what Rafael Viñoly told trustees of the Cleveland Museum of Art nine years ago when he interviewed for the job of designing the institution’s massive expansion and renovation. Impressed, the trustees hired Viñoly, and, judging from the fine results so far, they were right to do so...

Article in today's WSJ about the Museum expansion

MUSEUM
A New Wing, a New Direction

By JOEL HENNING
Cleveland

This city's Museum of Art has accomplished Phase I of an eight-year, $350 million renovation and expansion that—if completed as planned in 2013—will be the largest cultural project in Ohio's history. The first phase includes an impressive renovation of both the original 1916 beaux-arts building and Marcel Breuer's modernist 1971 addition. It culminated in June with the opening of architect Rafael Viñoly's first of two proposed gallery wings.

Hell yeah, best place in all of Ohio if you ask this guy!  When they put the atrium over the courtyard it will knock the socks off of all those who come to visit.  Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has NOTHING on the Museum of Art.

the CMA is one of the last free art museums in the country, and despite recent cutbacks, remains committed to completing this renovation.  step right up and join, donate, etc.  as a fellow clevelander, I am asking you.

Ditto.  Also it's tax deductible, access to other museums and you get the free parking on certain days.

Interim director chosen to take reins

Cleveland Museum of Art hires Deborah Gribbon as it searches for current supervisor's successor

Published on Thursday, Aug 20, 2009

The Cleveland Museum of Art must be breathing a sigh of relief after announcing last week that former J. Paul Getty Museum Director Deborah Gribbon will come on board Sept. 14 as interim director, taking the reins from Timothy Rub, who leaves Sept. 21 to become the director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Gribbon has agreed to lead the Cleveland Museum of Art for about a year as it searches for a successor to Rub, who is leaving after only three years to succeed longtime Philadelphia Museum of Art director Anne d'Harnoncourt, who died last year...

That area is where the new main atrium is being built but I thought that was not supposed to be finished until like 2012. Perhaps they are starting it which would be nice.

can't start the atrium without the other side of the building.  that will likely be in the final phases.  the previous wing started with the two towers.  I imagine that is next, and probably also the loading dock.

From Litt:

Cleveland Museum of Art seeks OK from probate court to use art endowment income for construction
by Steven Litt / Plain Dealer Art Critic
Tuesday August 25, 2009, 3:20 PM

The Cleveland Museum of Art wants to fill a gap in funding for its $350 million expansion and renovation by dipping into one of the deepest pockets in town -- its own.

On Tuesday, the museum petitioned Cuyahoga County Probate Court for permission to tap up to $75 million in income over 10 years from two funds in its endowment and two outside trusts normally restricted to the purchase of art.
