Pigskin Brewing moving into retail, signs sponsorship with Ohio Machine

Pigskin Brewing Co. is marking two years in business with new cans and a new partnership.  The Gahanna craft brewery celebrated its second anniversary Feb. 18 at its Creekside brewpub.

Year three already is shaping up to be a busy one.  The brewery is tapping mobile canner Buckeye Canning to get its Laces Out hefeweizen and Undefeated IPA into cans later this month, the first move into retail for Pigskin.  Co-owner Mike Rockwell said the cans will be available at the brewpub after the first week of March and at select retailers.

Pigskin also signed a three-year deal with the Ohio Machine, which will make it the official beer of the Major League Lacrosse franchise.  A special Helles lager was being brewed this week and will be on tap at Pigskin’s concession stand in time for the Machine’s May 6 home opener at its new stadium, Fortress Obetz.

Have a sense of adventure? Off-the-beaten path cidery opening a taproom

Mad Moon Craft Cidery is ready to welcome in the public.

Owners Peter Moon and his wife Sally Carroll started selling cider in October 2014 and operate out of a 2,500-square-foot space at 2138 Britains Lane in Linden near the Northern Lights Shopping Center. The cidery is building out a modest taproom in hopes of opening a few days a month so folks can come in and taste the cider straight from the taps.

Here's how much BrewDog paid for its Franklinton bar site

While BrewDog USA Inc. has been plenty busy at its new home in Canal Winchester, it's getting ready to make a bar in Franklinton come to life, too.

On March 1, the Scottish craft brewer closed on the purchase of a pair of small parcels and a 4,200-square foot building at 463 W. Town St for $475,000. Last fall, co-founder James Watt identified 463 W. Town St. as the chosen spot for its Columbus bar.

BrewDog adding bars, seating, staff to meet demand at its DogTap bar, restaurant
By JD Malone, The Columbus Dispatch
Updated: March 6, 2017 at 12:49 PM

Open just two weeks, DogTap has drawn huge crowds and some consternation.  "Waiting times, availability of food, beer selection and the level of customer service in these first couple of weeks have not quite been at the level we aspire for them to be at," the company wrote in a blog post published today.

Reviews on Yelp point to some problems with food quality, spotty service and long, long waits, but reviewers also praised BrewDog's beers, the restaurant's design and atmosphere. ... DogTap has seen twice the traffic that the Scottish craft brewers planned for.  The company estimated 14,000 people had stopped in and the bar had served more than 10,000 pints of its flagship Punk India pale ale since it opened on February 20.

To resolve things, BrewDog plans to add "a lot more staff," a bar with a growler filling station and additional seating near the entrance to alleviate crowding in the restaurant.  More seating and an additional bar are planned on the mezzanine, which overlooks the restaurant and part of the brewery.  Also, a third new bar, built out of a shipping container, is planned on the patio outside.

Central Ohio's next new craft brewery is...

A former Damon’s restaurant is getting new life as – what else – a new brewery.

Husband and wife John Ream and Kristin Ream plan to open Trek Brewing Co. in the 9,000-square-foot former rib restaurant at 1486 Granville Road in Newark this fall.

Craft brewer revamping its look to go with new name, signs with distributor

Kindred Beer now really will be Kindred Beer. The year-old Gahanna microbrewer has tapped new leadership, is offering food to its tasting room and barrel house visitors and is expanding to a second taproom with plans in Clintonville. But also as part of its makeover, the brewer has renamed itself — formerly it was Kindred Artisan Ales — and rebranded its beers.

Combustion Brewery hopes to be gathering spot for all with large, family-friendly space

Combustion is more than just a name to Keith Jackson.

The owner of the soon-to-open Combustion Brewery & Taproom picked that moniker because the creation of fire evokes feelings of warmth and community — think of barbecues and bonfires. It’s that sense he hopes to bring to Pickerington when his brewery opens April 15.

oh no i had no idea they stopped the tours, what a shame. when i first moved to columbus, i lived in the continent briefly. before going out we used to walk over to the brewery, run through the tour trail ignoring it all, which was a walk through type tour you could do at your own pace, and get to the beer tasting room at the end. they gave you one or two drafts for free. believe it or not there was always a fresh dark bud that was pretty good, at least there at the brewery. i dont think i ever saw it elsewhere. come to think of it, i can see why they gave up the tours! ha.

BrewDog's first Ohio beers expected out by summer

It may have taken longer than expected, but the first of BrewDog’s Ohio-brewed beers will be released by summer.  The Scotland-based craft brewery, which calls Canal Winchester its U.S. home, has the first batches of Punk IPA in its tanks.  It has been importing its beer from the Scotland mothership so far.
( . . .)
The company updated fans on its progress via its blog - https://www.brewdog.com/usa/lowdown/blog/brewdog-usa-is-a-go.  The blog also noted that the keg line is completed and the canning line, capable of 32,500 cans an hour, will be up and running in the next few weeks.

A new brewery is coming to Newark and it'll have food trucks, lots of space for outdoor activities and a huge patio

Licking County is developing into quite the brewing hub.

Add DankHouse Brewing Co. to the “coming soon” list of local breweries. It’s yet another setting up shop in the county at 161 Forry St. in Newark. Pending license approvals, it should be open by July or August.

Loose Rail Brewing opening this weekend in downtown Canal Winchester

Loose Rail Brewing Co. is prepared to toot its own horn.

Though plenty proud of the beers it will be serving when it opens at 37 Waterloo St. in Canal Winchester May 5, this horn tooting will be quite literal. The brewery and taproom boasts a train whistle for use at last call or after a good tip.

Grove City's new craft brewer expands production capacity, hours and unveils full gastropub menu

Grove City Brewing Co. is done being quiet.

The craft brewery at 3946 Broadway in the suburb from which it takes its name has been open since late 2016, hosting events and maintaining some soft opening hours, but with the expansion of hours, the arrival of Columbus Craft Beer Week next week and an official grand opening party set for May 30, the 5,700-square-foot operation’s owners are ready to be more public.

1487 Brewery starting to land accounts, ready to start selling beer in June

The launch of 1487 Brewery isn’t going according to the original plan but, being a startup, that's par for the course.

Founder and CEO Ben King spoke about the ups and downs of developing and starting his Licking County craft brewery Friday at Columbus Startup Week. When I spoke with King last December about his motivations and plans, the hope was to have a beer garden opened in the Columbus area later this year to accompany the Alexandria pilot brewery (which also happens to be his house).

New owner of Zauber Brewing space switching to new brand next month

Here’s something new for the Central Ohio craft beer scene — an acquisition.

Scott Talmage and a group of investors bought the equipment and lease of Zauber Brewing Co. at 905 W. Fifth Ave. for an undisclosed sum and will rebrand as a new brewery possibly as soon as next month in that space near Grandview Heights.
