I went to Cilantro 2.0 last night.  It's basically the same, except they got rid of the TV above the bar.

As Starbucks shrinks, Michigan coffeehouse plans Cincinnati expansion

While national coffee giant Starbucks is closing stores across the country, a Michigan-based coffee house is expanding its footprint in the Cincinnati region.

Biggby Coffee, an East Lansing-based chain with 250 stores, primarily in the Midwest, is expanding with five new Cincinnati coffeeshops by April 2019. The first of those will pop up at 732 Middleton Way in Loveland this October.

"We want to be a place for people to meet and gather, and we want to support the community in every way we can," Biggby area representative Shanna Novosel told me.

Demand prompts Pendleton restaurant to expand

An establishment in Cincinnati's fast-growing Pendleton neighborhood that originally intended to be more of a bar that served food is expanding its kitchen to keep up with demand.

Nation Kitchen + Bar opened at 1200 Broadway St. in summer 2015. At the time, co-owner Andrew Salzbrun told me, it expected to be a kitchen that happened to serve food.

Here's what Funky's Catering has planned for the former Celestial space

The owners of Funky's Catering plan to capitalize on one of the best views of the city's skyline as they convert the Celestial Steakhouse into a private event space.

The Celestial, at 1071 Celestial St., hosted its last dinner service on July 21 in order to update the space and make way for an event center run by Funky's Catering. Demolition on that space began July 30, and the View – named for its panoramic views of downtown Cincinnati and the city's riverfront – will open by March 2019.

Longtime Over-the-Rhine bakery closes

A popular bakery that has been serving up fresh bread and pastries in Over-the-Rhine for more than two decades has closed its doors for good.

Shadeau Breads at 1336 Main St. has closed, according to Sibcy Cline Realtor George Verkamp, who is currently marketing the commercial condominium for sale.

Shadeau was opened in 1993 by Bill Pritz. Pritz retired and sold the bakery in August 2017 to his accountant of 10 years, Brett Arnow. Arnow, when reached for comment, declined to give any details of the closing.

Cincinnati restaurateurs embrace new dog patio law (although illegality was a surprise)

Cincinnati restaurateurs are wagging their tails over a new law that allows diners to take their canine companions along to dinner on their outdoor patios.

Believe it or not, it was generally illegal to have pets on the premises of food service operations or retail food operations with the thinking that it protects against food contamination. It's something the Ohio Department of Health didn't allow.

Downtown restaurateur opening lunch spot, market

A downtown restaurateur known for his upscale European fare is opening a lunch spot that will also serve as a market for fresh food and produce.

Jackson Rouse, the executive chef of Bauer Farm Kitchen in the basement of 435 Elm St., is opening Bauer Markt on the first floor of that building. Rouse hopes for it to be open by the end of September.

"Really what we're trying to do is obviously flip that spot into something that is fresh and new," Rouse told me. "I like it because it seems like it's in the 1980s, but we're going to breathe new life into a diner that's served for a long time."

Philly cheesesteak window coming to Over-the-Rhine

A new walk-up window in Over-the-Rhine will soon serve up Philly cheesesteak sandwiches and loaded sides to the lunch crowd and late-night revelers.

The 13th Street Alley is opening at 126 E. 13th St. across from the Old St. Mary's Church in Over-the-Rhine by the end of August.

...Blah blah blah, let's get to the point, Brownfield...

Gammouh knows purists insist on Cheez Whiz on their Philly's, and he said he'll offer it if there's a demand but he doesn't think that has mass appeal.

"Cheez Whiz is more like an acquired taste. We've tried it in the past, but a lot of people here like the taste of provolone," he said.

Does Cheez Whiz even go bad? It seems like something easy to offer. If hardly anyone wants it, then just buy a jar every few months or whatever.

OTR wine-centric small plates restaurant sets opening date

A Louisville-based restaurant focused on Southern-inspired small plates and an extensive wine list has set an opening date for its Over-the-Rhine location.

LouVino, which opened its first location in Louisville in 2014, is set to open at 1140 Main St. in Over-the-Rhine on Aug. 21. It will be the restaurant's fourth location.

LouVino specializes in small plates with a Southern twist, like bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with Stilton blue cheese; steak and hoe cakes with pobalno tomato sauce and roasted tomato jalapeño salsa; crab and lobster cakes with lobster custard and pea shoots, and confit chicken wings with red wine barbecue sauce or sherry buffalo sauce and blue cheese coleslaw.

Group behind Pendleton's Nation expanding with new restaurants

The group behind Nation Kitchen + Bar in Pendleton is expanding its restaurant reach, planning new locations to open in the next year.

The Hickory Wald group owns Nation, Rhinehaus in Over-the-Rhine and Hannaford at Pike & Madison in Covington. It also operates Three Points Urban Brewery, which neighbors Pendleton. The group just hired a new culinary director in Dave Taylor, a Ruby alum and the chef who opened La Poste in Clifton.

That is a step toward the group's aim of opening two new restaurants in the next year: a second Nation location, this time in Westwood, and a new fried chicken concept called CHX that will be attached to Three Points in Pendleton.
