http://www.dispatch.com/news/20180724/butter-christmas-story-sculptures-to-greet-visitors-as-ohio-state-fair-opens

One of the iconic parts of the Ohio State Fair is the butter cow sculpture in the Dairy Products Building.  The traditional butter cow is joined by new guests at every new fair.  This year, the 2018 Ohio State Fair is honoring the 35-year anniversary of “A Christmas Story” - the now famous movie that was released in 1983 and filmed in Cleveland.  The highlights include a butter sculpture version of Randy in his snowsuit, Ralphie in his bunny outfit, a Christmas tree with working lights and the leg lamp (of course):

Although I think my favorite is the butter sculpture of Flick with his tongue stuck to a frozen flagpole, along with a butter calf with its tongue stuck to the frozen flagpole:

The National Urban League had been holding its 2018 national conference in Columbus since August 1.  The four-day conference that runs though August 4 is expected to draw 20,000 visitors:

Copied these notices from the Dispatch's Thursday Weekender section - was struck by the eclectic mixture of venues and the bands playing at nearly the same time on Saturday:

Music, beers and a hotel preview on tap for BrewDog event

BrewDog USA is amping up its annual meeting.

The craft brewer will hold its third AGM (Annual General Mayhem) event on Aug. 25 at its Canal Winchester brewery, and it’s a big leap from the first one two years ago when the brewery consisted of a 100,000-square-foot empty box with a makeshift stage and some beer tables.

The music bill this year is headlined by California rockers Cold War Kids, lovelytheband and Joywave alongside a slew of locals including Angela Perley & the Howlin’ Moons and Parker Louis.

(Been meaning to make this Pelotonia post this over the past two weeks, but just getting around to it now:)

Over the weekend of August 3-5, Pelotonia celebrated its 10th anniversary: http://pelotonia.org/about/history/

"Founded in 2008, Pelotonia was established with the objective to fund life-saving cancer research.  Pelotonia is a three-day experience that includes a weekend of cycling, entertainment, and volunteerism.  Through its first nine rides, Pelotonia raised more than $157 million for cancer research.  Thanks to its generous funding partners, Huntington Bank, L Brands Foundation, Peggy and Richard Santulli, American Electric Power Foundation, Harold C. Schott Foundation, Lilly Oncology, Cardinal Health Foundation, Diamond Hill Capital Management, and Nationwide Insurance, Pelotonia is able to direct 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar to cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute."

Here is a slideshow of Pelotonia over the years:

It started out in the center of Downtown Columbus next to Columbus Commons:

For better logistics and to accommodate the growing number of riders, it moved over to the Arena District in later years:

Riders gather in the Arena District on Friday for opening ceremonies - some camping out at McFerson Commons park - before starting their routes on Saturday:

These are the routes for the 10th anniversary 2018 Pelotonia.  The number of routes has expanded over the years to include some non-Columbus routes in Central Ohio, including a Sunday only non-Columbus route.  Funds are raised by each rider based on the route they choose:

$157 million has been raised for cancer research over the first nine Pelotonia's.  This chart shows the money raised from the 2018 Pelotonia to date:

Here are the riders outside the big city and on the rural roads:

Sometimes the rural buildings point the way:

Remembering what Pelotonia is for:

Remembering how Pelotonia gets done:
