^Very interesting.  I can only guess what that other project was...

In all seriousness, I wish I had tried to organize a group of investors a few years ago when the Dollar Bank bldg was on the market for only a million bucks.  With the ECP underway and the historic tax credits (helpful for nearby buildings) working their way through the legislature, Euclid was only going to get hotter.

I think simply... everyone was afraid that some loud cry for preservation of the dollar bank building would have jeopardized the project.  And no one wanted to jeopardize this project... and i did heare some "concessions" were made on another project that basically made everyone swallow their tongue on this one.

Are you implying there could have been a large parking lot in place of 668????  I think I may have puked and moved to Medina.

No  :)

they presented (as developers always do) as... we have to do it this way or it won't work.  I think everyone was afraid if they pushed the preservation of dollar bank too much they would have walked away from the project and 668 would still be for sale, rotting, and holding both Euclid and Prospect avenues ransom with it's horridness.

I can't help but ask, why are they tearing this down now that Euclid is reopening versus when it was closed?

because they didn't close on the building until june.  i think they only waited this long, because they needed the sidewalk on the north side open to divert traffic.

So are they gonna start working on the 668 facade after the Dollar Bank building is demolished?  I seem to recall mayor mcc saying something about them wanting to finish before winter???

Man, that thing's looking ugly...knock it down already!  Is it safe to assume they're saving the stone facade,by the way they are taking it off??

Thanks for the pics Mayday!

When was the Dollar Bank bldg built? I ask because I was expecting to see a semi-cool and/or historic facade under the present hideous one, but that's not the case.

I saw Mayday lurking at lunch and I think it's safe to say his pictures are going to be waaaayyyyy better than mine... so at least i can be first.  :-P

Needless to say, demolition has intensified:

1. I believe this very large crane is about to spell the end of the dollar bank building.
2. Sections of the canopy are being removed, all that natural wild plant life going to waste.
3. Dollar Bank Building (or what's left of it)
4. Up close and personal.
5. I still think it's too bad this building had to go.
6. One of the three Bobcats I saw roving around wreaking havoc inside 668.  When I saw them rolling around in the dark of the building with those headlights, I kept thinking of the opening scenes of the original terminator.
7. These are some MEAN Bobcats.

You guys are like UO's projects paparazzi!!

I see what you mean about the bobcats and those claw-like apparatus. I believe they're marketed as Cyberdyne Systems Model 668.  :-D

Awesome!  A track crane sitting on the new Euclid Avenue ready to tear it to shreds.  I know, it's all for progress, but man I wich this could have been done 6 mos ago.

Awesome, thanks!  Your photo updates (and everyone else's) are always enjoyed!

I wonder how many of those construction dumpsters this project is going to fill?  That is one major gut job.

They've set up some plywood boards in front of the BRT Station so nothing damages the glass.

Apparently there were multiple UOers in the crowd and we didn't even know it.  I was passing by about 5 yesterday when I saw them fixing the bucket and wrecking ball to the crane.  I walked over and asked one of the foremen when they were planning on starting (expecting to here something like 7 or 8am tomorrow) and he said "about 2 minutes".  So I planted myself in front of the Nat City Investments building watched for about an hour and took some pics.  My personal favorite was when Suzy Suburbanite came wandering by looking for someone to share her wisdom with... she chose me.  "How much do you want to bet they never build what they're planning there... and they destroy that worthless new bus station in the process."  I thought momentarily about throwing her into oncoming traffic on Euclid Avenue, but alas the Health Line won't be running till October.  I shook my head and walked away... Here's the pics:
