Downtown (61 images)

Downtown Toledo holds one of the best streets in Ohio for architecture, Madison Ave. From the beautiful COSI Science Museum inside the old Portside Mall to the Valentine Theater, downtown Toledo is teaming with life. The 1936-built all-glass Owens-Illinois Glass Company eventually led to the International style of architecture. The 5/3rd Ballpark, home of the Toledo Mudhens, sits in the Erie Street Market District while skyscrapers line the Maumee River. Across from downtown is a wonderful restaurant complex called Restaurant Row, which faces the gleaming skyline. The Anthony Wayne Bridge connects the east and west sides of Toledo while I-75 skirts around the downtown.

Located west of downtown near Madison Ave, Old West End is the home most architectural styles including the claim of the most Late Victorian and Edwardian styled homes east of the Mississippi. The neighborhood's most famous resident is the Toledo Museum of Art, one of the best art museums in the country. Also, the University of Toledo is nearby.

Eastside (47 images)

East Toledo is like a separate city from the rest of Toledo (due to the wide Maumee River). The home of Tony Packo's, a hot dog restaurant made famous by Toledo native Jamie Farr, East Toledo is mostly Great Lakes residential architecture, beautiful churches, eastern European ethnic enclaves, and some commercial vitality. Birmingham, eastside's largest neighborhood, is mostly Hungarian. The eastside is also the home of many factories, the Sports Arena, and Riverboat Row, a restaurant complex across from downtown.

Vistula (20 images)

Vistula is Toledo's oldest section. Rowhouses, strong brick housing, and some factories make this area stand out in Toledo. Vistula (and where downtown Toledo is today, Port Lawrence) is the original town/settlement until around 1833, when a merger occurred and Toledo became a combined city.

Maumee (22 images)

Maumee (pop: 15,074) is one of Toledo's historic suburbs (as a matter of fact, it's older than Toledo!). Lying along the Maumee River (go fig), Maumee is the site of the Battle of Fallen Timbers (1794) and was a major point for river (and Wabash & Erie Canal) trade. It is currently a business center with over 30,000 employed jobs. Maumee has wonderful historical homes (including the Wolcott House) along with a wonderfully intact downtown.

Landmarks (32 images)

Toledo Landmarks include the Anthony Wayne Suspension Bridge, the nation's largest mosque in Perrysburg, the Valentine Theater, the home of the Toledo Ballet, and the University of Toledo carillon. The Ohio State/Michigan flags photo is a testament to the city's divided heritage. But remember, it is south of the border. One of Toledo's most notable attractions is the USS Willis B. Boyer Museum, with a fine collection of memorabilia of the Great Lakes ships.

<![CDATA[Toledo]]> http://www.urbanohio.com/gallery/index.php?album=Northwest%2520Ohio/Toledo/ Toledo

Toledo, an 81 sq mi city of 309,106, is Ohio's fourth largest city and sixth largest metropolitan area (behind Akron, Dayton, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland) at around 620,000 and, including the Fremont area, around 700,000. Built inside an old swamp, the city, although flat, has wonderful lakefront access and is one of the largest inland ports in the country. The Glass City is home of some of the most ornate and elaborate architecture in the state, with a world famous art museum, zoo, and Tony Packo's, the city's signature restaurant along with other various cultural institutions, the University of Toledo, Fortune 500 companies, the humongous Jeep factory, and even the country's largest mosque. A city of contrast, Toledo will continue to grow and impress visitors to the hub of Northwest Ohio!
