Pomeroy (pop: 2,000) is one of Ohio's most classic Appalachian towns. The county seat of Meigs County, Pomeroy has a very interesting downtown, with shops, restaurants, a nice courthouse, all built between the Ohio River and two blocks north...cliffs. Stunning scenery, a beautiful riverfront park, and bikepaths make this town down right awesome. UrbanOhio recommends a trip down to Pomeroy to see quintessential Appalachia Ohio. Pomeroy, where riverboats still pull up to the town docks, and boats travel down Main Street, may be the only city listed in "Ripley's Believe It or Not" twice. The three-story Meigs County Courthouse in downtown Pomeroy, which has a ground-level entrance on every floor, is responsible for one listing. Pomeroy appears a second time because of its lack of cross streets. Main Street runs parallel with the Ohio River, making cross streets impossible. Not bad for an old coal town and also being the home of Ohio's only Civil War battlefield.
