Mingo Junction (pop: 3,631) is one of Ohio's most storied small towns. The home of Deer Hunter and other movies, Mingo Junction is an old Appalachian steel town in Northeast Ohio (which seems more like Southeast Ohio in appearance) and is the home of famous pop-culture icons Wild Cherry ("Play That Funky Music, White Boy"). George Washington once surveyed this area, and the town still has a dense, long downtown (with a looming steel factory) along with extreme topography and blue-collar atmosphere. If there is any city in Ohio that is "steel city, Appalachian, blue collar, and damn proud of it," it's Mingo Junction. It even has a fascinating website devoted to it.
