Mt. Sterling (pop: 1,856) may have a misleading name (the town is quite flat), but there is a good reason. The Madison County village is named after the Kentucky home of John J. Smith, who filed the plat in 1828. Downtown has a good set of businesses and residents enjoy close proximity to Deer Creek State Park, which is just six miles from the town core.
