Marion (pop: 35,318) is the birthplace of Warren G. Harding and the Popcorn Capital of the World. The seat of Marion county, it is home to one of architects David Gibb's twin courthouses; the Marion County Courthouse is nearly identical to the courthouse in Fayette County in Washington Courthouse. Union and Henry Counties also share identical Gibb's designs. Marion was home to the Marion Steam Shovel Company whose shovels dug the Panama Canal. Downtown has seen some hard times in recent decades, but has much potential with a good supply of sturdy, ornate buildings.
