^^Sweet pics
I think we're on our way to having a healthy downtown. The magic number that would give us this is 25,000, at least according to Frank Jackson. We have a few years to go before we have that many people living downtown, but I don't believe it to be too far off into the future. When developers and investors see the success that the Pinnacle and District Park will have, we will see new housing construction sites popping up not just in the WD, but also in Gateway and other parts of downtown. With more people downtown, there's a good chance that run-off development will spill into the neighborhoods which need it. It will take time, but I believe right now we are a part of the city and the regions rebirth. As far as the political scene in this town... it's a good thing that the old power structure is getting older (Miller, Ratner, and the other billionaires that controll our politicians like puppets). Now we might actually get something done here LOL

Keep in mind that, when Mayor Campbell and others say there's X-thousand people living downtown, they actually count an average of 2,000 people or so "living" at the Cuyahoga County Jail!
Having 25,000 people living downtown would make a huge difference. But to have a truly healthy downtown, a better goal is to have 10 percent of the mother city's population living in the core -- or about 50,000 people. Obviously, we're a long way from that. Best to make 25K the interim goal, then once that's achieved, the momentum would be there to help move us toward doubling it.
I'm not sure where all these people would be employed, though. Gotta get the jobs here....I hate chicken-and-egg situations!

I agree it's a total chicken and egg situation. You need jobs and amenities such as groceries and pharmacies to get people to live downtown, but you need "critical mass" of people living there before developers will move in. Hopefully as the more adventurous developers continue to create apartments / condos and people move in, we will get closer to that critical point, and soon.

we are getting a grocery store in the WD. hopefully that will bring some more people into the area. It seems as though theres tons of places to eat downtown, the place is bustling on the weekend with the places to eat. Just a few weeks ago i checked out the WD and thats exactly what i encountered, but as far as checking out stores there... well... the porn shop on W 6th(or W 9th?) was kinda interesting...? lol

i could not even tell that was a parking garage. nice trick! ground level retail or whatever business space is mandatory. good show by the planners to think ahead too by making the structure flexible for housing.
to the doubters, i'd say this kind of minor infill building is among the most important activity that can go on in a healthy city. i'm sorry building construction is not happening on some people's timeline but the important thing is it is happening and cranes are in the sky in cleveland. it wont be long until the rehabs are all rehabbed and more new construction starts at a faster rate. keep supporting it by buying into it and it will continue exponentially!
for now yay lets hear it for cool creative parking garages!

I think I went into that porn store one time when I went to the Flats. This was probably 8 years ago, though.

Anybody have any idea who the developers might have in mind to occupy the 11,000 (?) SQ of retail on the ground floor? I'd imagine they should have an easier time now with the addition of the HOB accross the street.
I apologize if there already is a topic regarding this, but I noticed on my last trip downtown that it appears some of the building between the Colonial Arcade and E. 4th have had their old facades stripped off. Curious if there's any news regarding that strip of buildings.
The closer we get to the opening of the HOB the more excited I get to see what else they might have cooked up for this stretch. A few things that might be cool for the area on Euclid right near E. 4th:
-A Rainforest Cafe (would be pretty cool to help complement some of the other themed venues in the area
-H & M (I know that Westlake is already adding one, but I can't help but hope. Just seeing how packed all of the NYC ones are keeps me dreaming)
-That rumored Virgin Megastore
-Margaritaville (I know Cleveland's not exactly tropical, but I think we have enough Parrotheads up here to keep the place jumping)
Just all this talk about HOB keeps me hoping, feel free to add to the list of what you'd like to see happen around E. 4th and Euclid.

Well, personally I am not a big fan of corporate restuarants, but I think I remember some talk of making the may company building an ESPN Zone. It would have enterances on Public Square and Prospect facing Gateway. I think that would be OK.

I too agree that I'd love to see more locally operated restaurants go in, but one can't deny the drawing power of these large chains. What comes to mind for me is the River North neighborhood of Chicago. They seemed to successfully combine chains (Rainforest Cafe, Hard Rock) and locally owned restaurants (Gino's East Pizza, Harry Carey's) to make a very unique setting. I'd love to see locally owned restaurants prosper in that area, but I think even local restaurant owners would agree that unique chains help to bring more people (and money) to the area.

I go by it usually once a day during the workweek - the main core is up and they're working on the ramp. It's up to about the 3rd level of parking level concrete but I imagine the weather has slowed progress.
The buildings across the street look like they may be restored to their original facades but the weather is probably affecting that as well.

I can confirm that they're restoring the facades of the buildings on the south side of Euclid - they've cleaned the former McCrory Building and the others seem to be awaiting the same fate.
Another update of 515 Euclid:

Hmmm.... a new design? I read somewhere recently that it was 7 stories instead of five, and what we've seen with the elevator shaft and those new renderings confirm it. I guess that means that the article was probably right about the condo tower being 17 stories (instead of 20) as well.
The new rendering looks much more "finished" than the old one, as well, although more conservative. Looks like an echo of one of the old dept stores that lined Euclid. Thanks, MayDay.

It sounds like the 17-story apartment building doesn't count the 7-story parking deck. In other words, 24 stories total. Am I right?
Why not just build the apartment tower and the parking deck at the same time? I would think the parking deck couldn't be used while construction of the apartment tower is going on, thus they will be paying the financing for the parking deck without the revenues to retire it? Unless, the apartment tower is some years off in the future and the developers believe the parking revenues will help get them started on financing for the tower? Just musing what their thinking might be on this....

This project still confuses me.....is the tower portion of the project being built soon, or is it something that may happen in the distant future? Height wise, how does the proposed tower compare to the Federal Courthouse tower? (that's the lastest skyscraper in CLE right?)

It is about the same height as Fed cths Tower. Size wise, it looks comparable to 5th Third. It is being built in the future. The 10 story parking garage is being built now.
