Topic: Fairborn Theatre may gain historic designation

I don't have any pics, but I believe the theater is in kind of a run-down state.  From the 4/8/05 Dayton Business Journal:


Fairborn Theatre may get historic designation

The Fairborn Theatre soon may be listed among the country's significant historic places.

The Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board is scheduled to meet April 15 to determine whether the theater, as well as nine other sites around the state, meet the criteria for the National Register of Places.

Interesting.  My family and I used to enjoy going there to see the cheap second-run movies; it was very disappointing when it closed.

That is an understatement.  That theatre is an absolute DUMP!  People in Fairborn are too occupied with sprawl and competing with Beavercreek for any cheesy chain while Fairborn's downtown continues to spiral to the ground.  Seriously, this needs to be saved and restored.  It is a vital part to downtown Fairborn.

It happened.  The Deeds Carillon won the designation as well.  From the 8/22/05 Dayton Business Journal:

Two local landmarks have been added to the country's list of historically significant places.

The U.S. Department of the Interior added The Fairborn Theatre and the Deeds Carillon, the large 57-bell tower that is the centerpiece of Carillon Historical Park in Dayton, to the National Register of Historic Places.

It does need to be saved and the city leaders are too concerned with competing with larger cities.  But saying that the theater is a dump is a little harsh.  Comments and viewpoints like that is what causes old buildings to be torn down.  Do you and your friends frequent downtown Fairborn businesses?

Vectren donates $500 for Fairborn Theater
RAINEY HOWARTH
Staff Writer

FAIRBORN -- Under the marquee of the Fairborn Community Theater, a representative of Vectren gave a donation to the Fairborn Performing Arts & Cultural Association Wednesday.

The $500 donation will help with the next step in the renovation process, fixing up the front lobby area, said FPACA Board President Raleigh Sandy. Old seats are still being sold to make room for new theater seats.
