UK parents back corporal punishment in schools

Half the nation's parents would like to see a return to corporal punishment in schools, according to a survey out today. A poll of more than 2,000 parents revealed that 49 per cent of them wanted to see a return to the days when smacking and caning were allowed in schools. A separate poll of 530 children currently at secondary school revealed nearly one in five of them (19 per cent) would like to see its return to bring more discipline to the classroom. The polls, commissioned by the Times Educational Supplement, come at a time when the Education Secretary Michael Gove is launching a crusade to improve discipline in schools on the theme that children have to know "who's boss".

The parents agree with him on the need for more discipline in schools – 93 per cent believed teachers should be given powers to demonstrate more authority in schools as did 68 per cent of the pupils. Under Mr Gove's reforms, teachers will be told they have a carte blanche to use physical restraint in schools and to confiscate items such as knives, mobile phones and drugs. However, both Mr Gove and Labour's Education spokesman Andy Burnham stopped short of endorsing a return to corporal punishment in their reactions to the survey. Mr Gove said: "As well as signalling to teachers they are freer to use their own judgement, we are taking every step to back up the exercise of their authority." Mr Burnham added: "Teachers need the authority to maintain disciple and promote excellent standards of behaviour in our schools."

I was the beneficiary of some serious thrashings at a township school through 8th grade, and whatever I got at school, I got double when I got home. Look how nice and respectful and well-behaved I am!

I pity the teacher who strikes my kid.... and the cellmate that would have to deal with the gas build up from a prison diet.

I think students should be beat!  They think they are equals with teachers.  Hell if their parents had been beat, we would have the amount of single family homes we have today!

As much as a Fascist as I am, I am not really in favor of classic corporal punishment in school.  Now, I don't have a problem if the jym teacher/football coach throws a student against a wall, but I think it is the parent's domain to determine how, or how not to discipline their children.

The school's rememdy for students that can't be socialized should be limited to expulsion- wich should be used routinely-followed up by prison without parole.

^I am favor of corporal punishment but opposed to the example you just gave.  Such behavior is usual exhibited in the heat of the moment and is unfair and potentially dangerous.

Swats in the vice principals office is the way to go.  I recall the corporal punishment  in my day had a significant element of due process.  Also, you were usually given the choice of detention or swats.  Most guys choose swats (and boy they were swats...believe me)...I guess it showed you were a man.

How hard to they get to swat?  Can they break skin?  When does it become excessive?  Seems like a can of worms to me, regardless of your personal feelings on the true effectiveness of physical abuse as a form of punishment.

It also doesn't make sense to me that teachers in school would be given greater latitude than prison guards dealing with convicted felons.

Swats instead of detention was always my choice!  Plus, the Vice Principal who administered the swats new why most of us chose the swats!  We didn't want to deal with our fathers when we got home!

I don't like the idea of giving the Government explicit authority to do much of anything. Especially where personal liberty is invloved, unless of course you are a convicted criminal.

There was a hole in the wall from the coaches office into the junior high girls shower room.  The gym teacher would allow you to look at the naked 13 year old girls, but it would cost you a swat!

Could you imagine what would happen to that gym teacher today?  Jail for sure!!
