Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine - Art Academy of Cincinnati
« on: March 04, 2005, 02:30:14 AM »
While I think we all will miss the Barrellhouse Brewing Co., this is a great use for a building that was way underutilized.  The renovation and all the students should really help out the area.

Here are a few pics from the website (http://www.artacademy.edu/whatsnew/building.htm), there are many more.....

Wow, looking good.  Other than The Barrellhouse, was there anything else in the building?

I like the moving around in that area.  I don't miss the Barrelhouse because I never went there and I'm too young to legally drink.  It's good that the site though will be enhanced.

The building looks great from the outside now with the new windows.  With the new garage and condos going in across the street, it is a welcome beacon of investment in the neighborhood.  And a very stark contrast to areas just a block or two away.

I would love to see the Academy sponsor art projects throughout the neighborhood such as murals, sculptures, or maybe even painting some buildings. So many little things could be done to enliven the neighborhood. Hey Kendall, got a paintbrush?

^ First, the pic needs to be saved on your hard drive.  (You can delete it from your HD after you've uploaded it.)

Instead of Quick Reply, reply by using the "Reply" button.  Under the message box is "Additional Options".  When you click on that, there's a box for attachments.  Hit "Browse" and select the file you wish to use.

All images must be under something like 156 KB (auditor's pics are usually WELL below that).

I don't know much about Art Academies, but this facility looks first-rate and it can only raise the institution's stature.  Not to mention the tremendous impact it will have on the neighborhood.

Did anyone catch this letter to the editor in today's (5/28) Enquirer?:

Art Academy move looks like a scary one
Letters to the editor

I have always appreciated and enjoyed the Cincinnati Art Museum's location in Eden Park, and thought how fitting it was to have the Art Academy next door. What a beautiful campus to inspire young artists to a career in art.

I was sad to read in The Enquirer that this year's class was the last to graduate from the academy at this location. I was interested enough to drive down to the Music Hall area to see if I could find the new location for the Art Academy. With a little driving around I found the building.

The people responsible for this move should have their heads examined. I am a 79-year-old ex-Marine, and I was fearful just driving down the street in this area.

William Dean, Mount Washington

http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050528/EDIT0202/505280332/1022/EDIT

WTF?!?  Okay, Mr. Drama!  Could the fact that your so fearful is that you're 79 freaking years old?  Or is it the fact that you live in Mt. Washington, one of the most suburban and white bread neighborhoods in the city?  I mean, Jeebus, he had to "drive around" to find Music Hall for Christ's sake!

Art Academy gets grant for moving expenses

The Art Academy of Cincinnati has received a $60,000 grant from the Greater Cincinnati Foundation (GCF) to fund expenses for its move to a new campus in Over-the-Rhine.  Of that amount, $24,000 was provided by the Abraham, Katie, Eleanor and Natalie Feld Memorial Fund, a "field of interest" fund of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation.

The GCF grant will help the Art Academy relocate to 1212 Jackson St. The move, which began June 15, continues through Aug. 26.  The Greater Cincinnati Foundation is a charitable organization that builds and preserves endowment funds, identifies opportunities to enhance community life and provides grants in six areas: arts and culture, community progress, education, the environment, health and human services. GCF provides philanthropic leadership to eight counties in the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana region.

Anyone read CityBeat? This is a very good article that I didn't see posted here.

The Art Academy of Cincinnati Bets Its Future On An Old Building and On Over-The-Rhine
By Steve Ramos

A Factory For Art

The Vandercook printing press is a hulk of iron and steel that weighs 300 pounds, and it's something you want to move only when absolutely necessary. The press, used for poster and book printing, is 65 years old and has been part of the Art Academy of Cincinnati's design department since 1996.

The letter press' previous home was the first floor of the Art Academy's Mount Adams building, its historic classroom facility along with its Eden Park building adjacent to the Cincinnati Art Museum. But it's one of the first items to be moved to the school's new facility at 1212 Jackson St., a gritty side street between Vine and Walnut in Over-the-Rhine.

Students embrace new Art Academy
Parking, safety only concerns in $13.1 million building

By Lori Kurtzman Enquirer staff writer

The new art school is huge and breezy, with worn concrete floors, freshly painted walls and 26 student studios already beginning to fill with supplies. It is 120,000 square feet of "industrial-chic" learning space, with seven floors and an atrium running up the middle.

In all, the renovation of the Art Academy of Cincinnati's new campus in Over-the-Rhine took five years of planning, 13 months of construction and $13.1 million, and President Gregory Allgire Smith now walks through the halls wondering how the 200-student academy ever did without it.  But what do the students - who started at the new building Monday - think?

I plan on going to the Art Academy's open house on September 10.  I really want to see how the new building looks.

I've taken a few classes through their Community Education program, and I could tell that they really needed a new location.  I know they mentioned parking being bad  at the new location, but I don't remember it being great at the old one either.

Academy's new digs picture-perfect
By Sara Pearce Enquirer staff writer

The red neon "Art" sign on Jackson Street was aglow on the front of the Art Academy of Cincinnati's new home in Over-the-Rhine, signaling the opening Friday night of the Ruthe G. Pearlman Gallery.  Inside, there was almost as much interest in gawking at the renovated warehouses as there was in viewing By Their Labor, the exhibit of glossy color photographs by Howard Wells documenting the construction.

But strategically-stationed art students kept the curious, including Kathy Holwadel of neighboring InkTank and freelance art critic Jane Durrell, from making it past the first floor.  Even photographer David Rosenthal, whose family once owned the south building as the home of Rosenthal Printing, was thwarted. He reminisced with Wells about a childhood visit as the two stood in front of a photograph of the sixth floor when it was dusty, peeling and empty.
