Moving to Pittsburgh Area
« on: June 30, 2010, 09:41:38 AM »
As of today I accepted a prelim verbal offer to be the new Community Planner with Cranberry Township, PA. Though ideally my search would've landed me in Ohio, I am excited and happy for the opportunity.

Any information, advice, or suggestions, in terms of re-locating, would be appreciated.

Congrats! You've certainly worked hard and sacrificed to get to this point. Best of luck, and although it sucks to see another brain leave Ohio, you're making a smart career move. Go wherever the jobs are.

And you never know, this could be a springboard to come back to Ohio in the future if something opens up.

Cranberry = sprawly, but you knew that already.  If I were you, I'd pick Lawrenceville or downtown.  Easy highway access, urban neighborhoods, etc.

Yep. I suggested someplace on the 13K route because, even if I plan to drive to work everyday, I always want to have contingency option of getting to work. I've never lived anywhere without having a transit option available. And when Cleveland RTA cut my one-seat ride to work last year, I quit my job. But that's my little quirk...

The South Side is an excellent urban neighborhood, though I think it is fairly expensive.  I don't know about transit connections.

Bainbridge? :)

What are ya, a lawyer? OK, when I had the ability to choose where I wanted to live I always chose places where I had options..... I lived at my parents house in Bainbridge before 1993. The sad thing is, we moved in 1978 to our house in Bainbridge that was a half-mile from the Geauga Lake train station that was a stop on the Erie-Lackawanna commuter train between Youngstown and Cleveland's Union Terminal. The train stopped running in 1977.

But anyway......

What is fair to expect for around $650?

Also, I'm not familiar with apartment hunting in cities that are foreign to me. Is the internet reliable or do you yield more/better results actually being on the ground?

A little bit of both.  Check the internet for interesting deals and actually go there to see if they hold true.  And I'd imagine $650 is a good price for a good place there.  Pittsburgh's MSA (last I checked) is "cheaper" than Dayton, Cincinnati, Columbus, etc.

FYI - I found a place to live. It is bigger, i.e. more expensive, than what I really needed or wanted but my options were fairly limited. Apparently Pittsburgh isn't crawling with apartment complexes (at least within a reasonable commute to my place of employment). I'll be living in suburbia but I'm a quarter-mile max from work. Guess who will be doing a lot of walking/biking to save on gas?

Right in Cranberry Twp., in the northern burbs. I wanted something more urban but most of the more desirable areas were simply just farther than I wanted to drive.

I hope you keep looking. There's some cool areas in Sewickely and the the Old Economy Village of Ambridge. That's not too far from Cranberry.
