Public hearing is set on proposal to link downtown and university
A decision by city council on extending Hazel Street is expected in December.

By DAVID SKOLNICK
CITY HALL REPORTER

YOUNGSTOWN — The public will have an opportunity to comment on a proposal to link Youngstown State University to downtown by extending Hazel Street.

On Thursday, city officials will release a draft transportation survey conducted by MS Consultants to determine the impact the Lincoln-Rayen-Wood development district would have on traffic patterns in that area, particularly the proposed Hazel Street extension. The city will have a hearing at 6:30 p.m. that day in the Chevrolet Centre's community room.

The public is invited to comment on the draft study and submit written comments during the two weeks after the hearing, said Carmen S. Conglose Jr., the city's deputy director of the public works department.

Input sought on Hazel proposal
Consultants favor a two-way extension of Hazel Street from Commerce Street to Lincoln Avenue.

YOUNGSTOWN — Anyone with an interest in the city's proposed extension of Hazel Street has until Nov. 27 to submit comments in writing to Carmen S. Conglose Jr., the city's deputy director of public works.

Conglose and engineers from MS Consultants presented results of their transportation survey Thursday for public comment and said comments in writing are valuable to the progress of the plan.

A proposal by the city would link Youngstown State University to downtown by extending Hazel Street north from Commerce Street to Lincoln Avenue, part of the Lincoln-Rayen-Wood development district.

Council will consider YSU-downtown link
The university also supports the proposed street modification.

By DAVID SKOLNICK
CITY HALL REPORTER

YOUNGSTOWN — City officials will present a recommendation to city council members next week to extend Hazel Street and provide a link between Youngstown State University and downtown.

The city administration supports the recommendation made by MS Consultants in a $33,000 study to rebuild Hazel between Commerce and West Wood streets with an easterly curve so it can directly connect with the proposed Hazel extension on the north side of Wood to Lincoln Avenue.

The street would have space for two-way vehicular traffic and sidewalks on either side.

YSU officials had wanted Hazel between Commerce and West Wood to remain as it is and to build a Hazel extension that would require motorists to take a right and then a quick left to remain on the street heading from downtown to the university.

But YSU has no objection to the MS recommendation, said Ron Cole, a university spokesman.

Council to consider support for study
Some members of council don't support city funding for the project at this time.

By DAVID SKOLNICK
CITY HALL REPORTER

YOUNGSTOWN — City council will consider a resolution today to support a study recommending Hazel Street be extended to create a link between downtown and Youngstown State University.

The study, conducted for $33,000 by MS Consultants, recommends Hazel Street between Commerce and West Wood streets be rebuilt with an easterly curve so it can directly connect with the proposed Hazel extension on the north side of Wood to Lincoln Avenue.

Nathan Zaremba, no stranger to ambitious urban revival projects, has chosen Youngstown for his next challenge.

The Cleveland developer is pursuing a huge facelift for Smoky Hollow, an aging and depressed neighborhood that sits just east of the Mahoning County seat's main downtown corridor. Plans call for 270 homes and 20,000 square feet of retail.

The project’s first phase is set to begin as early as seven months from now.

YOUNGSTOWN — The long-awaited redevelopment of the Wick District-Smoky Hollow area is going to have to wait a little longer, but officials with the organization spearheading the effort say progress is being made.

About $5 million is needed for the first phase of the $100 million neighborhood with housing and retail businesses.

That would include about 55 townhouses and single-family houses as well as infrastructure, said Margaret Murphy, executive director of Wick Neighbors Inc., which is organizing the redevelopment effort.

This could be what finally triggers a long-discussed housing development for Smoky Hollow, where a friend of mine lived while attending YSU in the early 70s. Except for Cassese's MVR, there isn't much left of the Smoky Hollow neighborhood....

Ground Broken (5 Times) at Smoky Hollow
It was a long line-up of people with shovels for the press event in Smoky Hollow.
June 3, 2010 6:30 a.m.

By Dennis LaRueYOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Wednesday was a day many supporters of the Wick District Redevelopment Plan feared would never arrive. But it did, and during ceremonies yesterday, ground was broken five times for Harrison Commons, a five-acre park in Smoky Hollow.

As Jimmy Durante would have said, "Everybody wants to get into da act." Only seven shovels were provided for the first round of breaking ground.

The park is part of 10 acres of public green space in the 57-acre project planned to offer new townhouses and condominiums and commercial and retail space. New streets and sidewalks will be built.
