288 days of no snow - to end this weekend

"Cleveland's snowless stretch is longest in 85 years"
http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2012/12/clevelands_snowless_stretch_is.html

And a high wind advisory has just been issued for the are starting tomorrow afternoon through late night Friday morning
I was going to point out that we've had snow already, but apparently they don't count dustings.

The Weather Channel icon on my phone has turned from blue to red. I click on it and see, in addition to the wind advisory, we also have a Winter Storm Watch for Friday and Saturday for potentially 6-10 inches of snow. I hope it doesn't escalate to a warning. I have to drive a friend from the Cleveland Amtrak station at 5:30 a.m. to Ravenna in a rear-wheel-drive, 200-hp car with racing slicks. Anyone got a Range Rover I can borrow??

You sir, are an incredibly generous friend.

One of the best parts of being completely car free [and not having to commute in a suit] is having absolutely zero dread of snowstorms.

Based on tomorrow's weather forecast, my suggestions depend on your definition of "friend". If this is merely a good aquantence, give them directions to somewhere for breakfast, then tell them to take the PARTA bus from Tower City. If this is a good friend, meet them at 5:30 with a 6 pack and walk them to the bus (by the time they get down to Kent and then transfer to a bus into Ravenna in tomorrow mornings weather they should be sobered back up.) If this is someone that you have any intention of sleeping with, then suck it up and drive them but be careful.

I'm afraid I'm not so shallow, and that I follow through on my promises. My friend is from college whom I've known for 23 years. I tried to be there for him when his father died suddenly almost 20 years ago and when he lost his job and was in serious financial trouble about 10 years ago. He and I remain good friends, even though we live several hundred miles apart. BTW, he quit drinking before I did.

He also knows where to get the PARTA bus in Cleveland and more importantly when, which is not on Saturdays. He is a regular user of PARTA as he does not have a car. There is a possibility that the Sunday bus from Cleveland may not be operating either because KSU is on holiday break.

The snow wasn't/isn't the problem. it's all the idiot drivers that do not know how to drive in the snow.
Although it did not take me much longer than usual (I drive the opposite direction of rush hour), its took many people 4x their actual commute time this morning.

Tell you what, let's talk about a weather girl -- Indra Petersons. She was just hired by CNN from a TV station in LA, and I'm so glad. She is smoking hot! And she also was very knowledgeable in talking about the weather. I'm in love....

Could a 'Sharkicane' hit New York?

By NATALIE O’NEILL
Last Updated: 11:44 AM, July 14, 2013

This is no fish tale — Sharkicane could happen here!

If a raging hurricane were to strike New York City, it could suck up sharks and other sea creatures — triggering a Sharkicane, a horrifying real-life twist on the campy hit flick “Sharknado,” marine biologists warn.

“Hurricanes can carry huge volumes of water with them 20 or 30 feet over land — and whatever happens to be in that water does get transported along,” cautioned marine biologist Joe Yaiullo, of the Long Island Aquarium.

Getting ready to move to the West side (Cleveland) wanted to know from those who have experience is the West side noticeably sunnier than the East Side? For those unfamiliar with Cleveland's unique weather dichotomy, the east side is directly in the path of moisture containing westerly winds which creates a snow/rain/fog belt along and east of the north east sloping coast. The west side is south of the lake and misses a lot of this precipitation/ cloudiness. Any thoughts would be welcomed.
Without change, progress is impossible.

I think the extra precipitation you are talking about applies more to the snow belt (parts of the east and south side) than the east side in general.... especially the City proper and inner ring.  I've never heard of it being cloudier on the east side.

^ Cleveland is more overcast than the towns south when there is a significant temp difference between the air and water. Not just in the winter. April through June, there have been times I've left downtown completely overcast to get clear skies by 480 or 82 heading South. Only to come home to the gray. It happens when I drive out to Solon for work too.

I don't know how far west you need to go to avoid it.

I agree! Driving from the zoo to University Circle will be sunny to cloudy at least 2 or 3 days a month.. It's especially pronounced in winter time. I've left home in sunshine and arrived at UC to a medium blizzard.

There is much variation.  When Mayfield Hts has 3 inches of snow, my neighborhood in the inner ring might have 1 inch and there will only be a slight dusting in Euclid.  I've noticed the overcast clear up as I head south towards Akron, but never heading west towards the airport.

Top 10 Safest U.S. Cities From Natural Disasters

*  *  *  *  *

6. Dayton, Ohio
Dayton holds the record for the greatest natural disaster in Ohio history, based on lives and property lost, for the Great Dayton Flood of 1913. Afterward, a major flood control district was established. The Miami Conservancy District has kept Dayton safe from flooding more than 1,500 times, according to the city.

*  *  *  *  *

3. Akron, Ohio
Akron's big disaster was a tornado in 1943, although details on the storm are scarce.

*  *  *  *  *

2. Cleveland
Besides a few storms that cause some damage from wind and rain, Cleveland hasn't seen any major natural disasters.

Many in Cleveland (especially on West side) have no idea what real snow is, or what real heat, cold, etc..  They just need something to complain about.
