Cincinnati: Ball Around the Block Pub Crawl
« on: January 27, 2010, 12:20:44 AM »
Hey Everyone,

We are having a pub crawl in Downtown Cincinnati to raise money for a Dog Park for Downtown.  Nine bars without having to cross a street.  Come join my team (Team Lodge) and sign up here: http://www.ballsaroundtheblock.com/

Wish I could be there...Downtown really could use a public dog park.

Central Parkway's median is a defacto dog park. Or at least a toilet.

Pet waste stations and a lawn do not make a dog park.  An actual dog park would include an enclosed area where dogs can run around without a leash.  Often times this is a gravel type surface and is surrounded by benches for dog owners to sit, observe their dogs, and socialize with the other dog owners.

Heck, there are those pet waste stations along the sidewalk all over Midtown so that dog owners always have access to poop bags and somewhere to dispense of the materials.  In downtown Cincinnati these can be found in a number of locations that work as spots for dogs to do their business.

Oh I know, I've taken my two dogs back at home to several dog parks. The ones in Lexington are typically in suburban areas where there are very large, fenced in play areas, but that may not be all that practical for downtown. I would like to see some of the new land that will be created by Interstate 75's shift for a new park -- dog park, splash area, etc., which would strengthen the "Soapbox" district (or soapbar, whatever it was named).

Washington Park will have a dog park by Fall 2011, or so they say.

^There are many tremendous urban dog park designs that are similar to what I described (small gravel type area where dogs can run around surrounded by a fence with benches for dog owners to sit, observe and socialize).

I wrote about this about a year ago: http://www.urbancincy.com/2009/03/dog-parks-improve-livability-of-urban.html.  At the line you'll also find an image of an urban dog park in NYC (sorry can't embed here).
