A trip into West Virginia
I recently had to travel out to Charlottesville, Virginia for a conference and decided to swing by two large historical sites in West Virginia: Weston State Hospital and Sweet Springs Resort. I will be returning to these for more photographs in the future, so stay tuned.

Weston State Hospital

Weston State Hospital is now known as the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, and is open for tours.

Sweet Springs Resort

Originally opened as a health resort, over the years it became a sanatorium, a hospital, and towards the end of its active life, a nursing home and drug treatment center.








One of the cottages was outward bowing and in danger of collapse in 2003.


Fast forward to 2009, it is being stabilized.

2009: The sections that were collapsing were knocked down. The brick has been salvaged for complete restoration for 2010 that has been funded by the state.

A wayward note: the property is well watched and guarded, and the property was photographed with the express permission of the owners, who are working with the state to restore the resort. All of the buildings are secured, and some are occupied.

I think West Virginia is beautiful. It has some of the most spectacular scenery east of the Mississippi, gorgeous and impeccably-maintained state parks, and friendly, hospitable people. Yes, it has lost a lot of its economic base and some of its towns and cities are definitely on hard times, but I've always enjoyed my visits there. It's a splendid place in Spring and in Fall.

I stayed at Canaan Valley State Resort Park on my first night. Immaculate, but really kind of dated. My room has probably never been updated since the 1970s, sans the television with tubes. I think the same could be said for Hawk's Nest.

Canaan Valley has a really nice dining area, and their breakfast buffet is one of the best I've had. Lots of fresh (and local) fruits and veggies, and meats. Hawk's Nest was really... BLEH.

The topography at Blackwater Falls is something. Until I saw that gorge from the edge, I had no idea there was anything like that in the East. I saw the falls first and was impressed, and from the rim of the gorge the falls are just a tiny speck.

I agree.... The state park system is wonderful. Hardly the litter and yabbos that invades ours.

Well, Ohio's is very much underfunded. I had a discussion about this with another hiker I met at Red River Gorge (Kentucky)... who actually works for the Ohio DNR, and just some of the tales he has told, especially with the cutbacks and BS in the past few years alone... deeply undermines the goal of the DNR.

Let's just say they have spent far too much making the parks way too user friendly, marketing of them has promoted more influx than they can handle......then doing a deal with the devil on vending machines... That's just for starters.
