this sounds tasty. The import store said the food is awesome (grilled Octopus!!!) How do think it compares to the Greek church fest in Tremont?

Equally as good as the tremont festival.  I think the pita (tyropita) is better at the Tremont festival but the spanikopita is better at RR's festival. They also have more wines at the RR festival, and a tasty artichoke chicken dish.  I think the grape leaves are a little better at the Tremont festival but only marginally.  The tremont festival also has a table with some more authentic pita dishes (e.g. made with leeks and in a big pan instead of triangles) that aren't in the regular food line. But I think the RR one is where they have the big silent auction, I've won something there a couple of times so that's nice. Both are good festivals.  RR has a drive through!

Don't forget about the Greek Festival that is in Cleveland Hts near the end of summer.  Never been to RR, but I personally like the CH one better than Tremont.... maybe because it is so much closer.

We all know Cleveland has no shortage of summertime ethnic festivals, but what if you could experience a little bit of each at one event?  This is the idea behind the First Annual CultureFest!

The former St. Clair Superior Neighborhood Festival has this year transformed into CultureFest...a celebration of that neighborhood's (and the city's) cultural diversity.

The event will take place Saturday, June 27 from 11am to 7pm on the grounds of the Tyler Village redevelopment complex at 3615 Superior Avenue.  This family oriented event will feature ethnic foods, cultural displays, live performances and more!  Best of all Admission is free!  Check out the website for more info and a detailed performance schedule.

PERFORMANCES FROM...
Cleveland Chinese Music Ensemble
Native American Storytelling w/ Florence Toledo
Karamu House
Free Salsa Lessons from Selena Vicario
Tango Cleveland
Belly Dancing from Troupe Shabaana
Rhythm Culture Interactive Drum Circle
Button Box Duo performance by The Culkars
Slovenian Accordion music
Animal Dance Trio
Urban Artz Inc.
The Greater Cleveland Russian Chorale
Macedonian Folk Dancing Lesson
AND MANY OTHERS!

The Mayfield Road church's festival (St Constantine & Helen I believe) is IMO the worst food and the longest lines.  I only go if it's really, really off peak hours like first thing when they open or at like 2pm or something.

I looked for a Burke Airport thread but couldnt find one.

Burke Lakefront Airport welcomes farmers market

Posted by Trevor Hunnicutt/Plain Dealer Reporter June 18, 2009 21:34PM

An airport may not be the first place that comes to mind when Clevelanders think of fresh produce.
But that is the association that some local officials and vendors are hoping downtown workers and visitors will make with Burke Lakefront Airport.

The airport is now the site of a farmers market every Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

the best of the area fests, now in its 42nd year...

Lorain International Festival kicking off

LORAIN — Lorain’s International Festival was born 42 years ago, the brainchild of city visionaries who sounded a lot like the leaders of today.

They saw a city with tons of potential but a huge inferiority complex.

So they seized on Lorain’s diversity as a way of giving the city an identity. As early as 1966, they discussed forming a “nationalities council.” Within a year, that plan evolved into an idea we know now has stuck — promoting Lorain as “The International City.”

MTS (and the local news media) need a slap on the wrist for not mentioning this one!!!!   :whip:

The Puerto Rican parade went down Superior yesterday around 1pm (which is why I know about it), and we had no trouble seeing (or hearing ;)) it from our house.  It was actually a really long parade - about 30 minutes!  I hope to actually know about this ahead of time next year!

Like I said, you weren't the only one who didn't say anything.  There was NOTHING on any of the Cleveland news websites.  I had to ask the cop standing outside my house what the parade was for.

Haha, no we just watched it from the living room cause we were in the middle of organizing a bunch of stuff.  I suppose I wouldn't have needed to ask the cop if I would've waited until the parade started (I had just seen them congregating from afar) - once it started, it was quite obvious, cause there were like 50 million Puerto Rican flags :).  Next year we'll walk out to the curb if we know about it ahead of time.

Annual Coventry pie fight whips 200 participants into a frenzy
Posted by gshamray July 22, 2009 15:13PM

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS For a split second everything was silent. It was the calm before the storm.

Then, all at once, the pies began to fly. Hundreds of them.

Shrieks of terror, or perhaps delight, rang in the air, and for five minutes it was pure madness.

Soon, whipped cream and pie crust caked the faces of the almost 200 participants at the annual Coventry pie fight July 16.

Big weekend in Cleveland...

Tonight a group of us plan to go to the Feast of the Assumption in Little Italy (all first timers).  We are thinking about taking the Red line to either the University Circle stop or Euclid & E. 120th, any suggestions which stop is better?  Also, I would probably plan on taking the Red line back downtown afterwards, should we be concerned about walking to the Rapid from Little Italy or the train ride at all?

Tomorrow I plan to get my first taste of the Burning River Festival.  Has anyone been to this and is it a good time for a group of ~24-26 year olds?

Any advice on either of these events this weekend is much appreciated!

You can always take the Healthline which lets you off on Euclid and Mayfield or is it Cornell.

I think all three (University Circle, E. 120th and the Cornell stop of the HealthLine are good options ... it sounds like you might be coming from the West Side, in which case, the Red Line certainly makes more sense). The E. 120th station is closer but has a reputation for being a little less savory as a stop, mainly I believe because of the lighting, how the station is set up (a little more tucked away than University Circle's) and people's preconceptions about being on the border of East Cleveland. I think it's totally fine though, and I would imagine a lot of people will be riding the train to and from there tonight. University Circle is a bit further away but still totally walkable along a very nice little street. Either way, expect it to be safe ... There will literally be THOUSANDS of eyes on the street ... the event is a real trip and everywhere around Mayfield will be jammed with people. I wouldn't worry too much about safety. As always, just keep your wits about you and have at least one participant who doesn't get plastered :)

^It would depend on where they are coming from.  If it is downtown then yeah the Healthline may be quicker, anywhere on the weest side though and i would bet the one seater on the red line is their best bet.  Besides that's what I'm doing and i like to think I'm reasonably intelligent.

does anyone know what the F is going on downtown today?  I could not get into my building's parking garage, nor 4 different surface lots which are usually good backups.  I heard from my co-worker that our garage's lot (memorial plaza for key tower and the marriott) was nearly full at 7:30am.  WTFBBQ?

There's a game btw. Chicago White Sox and the Indians, and Common's performing at House of Blues, but those are both evening events.

The only other thing I can think of (but couldn't find info) would be those "motivational" speakers that show up annually at Quicken Loans Arena - Ziglar or something like that? It was usually in the fall, and like you said - parking was non-existent.

I just meant it like WTF is happening.  It's very unusual.  I wasn't saying it was bad or good, except on my own personal slant in that I had trouble parking.
