Morrissey Release Details Confirmed, Shows Scheduled
Joined by Chrissie Hynde on new single B-side

Years of Refusal, the forthcoming solo LP from onetime Smiths frontman (and world's best babysitter) Morrissey, will be released in the UK on February 16 from Decca/Polydor. Moz will sneak out a single for "I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris" on February 9, joined by the B-sides "Because of My Poor Education" and "Shame Is the Name". "Shame", as it turns out, finds Moz joined on vocals by none other than Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders.

Moz made it to Columbus.  Here's a review of his concert in the beautiful Palace Theatre in downtown.

Music review | Morrissey
Rocker reclusive, but bravado shows

Wednesday,  April 1, 2009 - 11:58 PM
By Kevin Joy, The Columbus Dispatch

Although his trademark pompadour might be thinning and next month he'll turn 50, Morrissey still has fire in his chiseled belly, one which the iconic English rocker (as usual) wasn't hesitant to show his fans.  For a singer who's practically made a career from songs about shyness and apathy, the Pope of Mope seemed downright jovial last night at the Palace Theatre.

we see morrissey often and went to the 3/26 carnegie hall show. sounds like cols was pretty much the same show we saw. here's a billboard review w/ the setlist of that one:

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/reviews-live/morrissey-march-26-2009-new-york-carnegie-1003956927.story

here's a typical lovable/unlovable moz concert quote

When a fan screamed, "Morrissey I love you!" he quickly replied, "I cannot be loved. I'm like a dog from the rescue home. There's no point."

The 2009 Columbus, Ohio, concert season is heating up with classic rock, pop and rockin’ country at a variety of venues. The major Columbus concert venues have once again attracted major concert tours in 2009. Nationwide Arena, the Schottenstein Center and (perhaps) Crew Stadium are snagging some of largest tours of the 2009 concert season.

I saw last year that Britney's tour would be rolling into Columbus on April 30th.  When I saw that I would have bet big money that her tour would have crashed and burned long before making here!  But it looks like Britney actually has a good shot to play at The Schott.

Coincidence or karma?  A North High Street bar changes its name to Circus.  Then Britney Spears brings her Circus Tour to Columbus.  Columbus Alive explores Circus: The Britney Tour vs. Circus: The Bar.

Headliners: Britney Spears
Thursday,  April 23, 2009
By Chris DeVille, Columbus Alive

Britney Spears brings her Circus tour to Columbus next Thursday, five months after Short North club High Five reopened under the name Circus.  At first glance, the two institutions would seem to have little in common beyond a recent fascination with the big top, but upon further examination, the parallels run much deeper.

Eight years after their debut EP sent the emerging internet music culture aflutter and helped launch Brooklyn as this decade's epicenter of hipster cool, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are finally playing their first show in Columbus.  Originally booked for 1,700-head Newport Music Hall, the gig sold out so fast that promoters moved it to LC Pavilion's 5,000-capacity outdoor amphitheater.

In a recent photo thread of Columbus and German Village, there was speculation on where Eric Clapton has a residence in Central Ohio.  I don't know the answer, but I do know he'll be at the Value City Arena on Monday.

VALUE CITY ARENA
LANE AVENUE AND OLENTANGY RIVER ROAD (1-800-745-3000, WWW.TICKETMASTER.COM)
Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood: The dynamic duo, who played together in the British supergroup Blind Faith, will play a mix of those songs along with hits from each musician's solo endeavors.
SHOWTIME: 8 p.m. Monday
TICKETS: $67.50 to $153

Leonard Cohen at Madison Square Garden: The master at 75

by Simon Vozick-Levinson

"I don’t know when we’ll be passing through here again,” he told the Madison Square Garden crowd early in last night’s set. “So I want to tell you that it is our intention to give you everything we’ve got tonight.” Leonard Cohen does not make empty promises. Backed by a tight folk-rock-jazz band of mostly gray-haired virtuosos, plus three otherworldly backup singers (including frequent collaborator Sharon Robinson), he played for nearly three hours. Cohen (pictured above at another recent show) hit the major peaks in his catalog along the way: “Suzanne,” “So Long, Marianne,” “Bird on the Wire,” “Famous Blue Raincoat,” “Chelsea Hotel #2,” “Hallelujah” (earning a standing ovation), “I’m Your Man,” “First We Take Manhattan” (of course!), “Everybody Knows,” “The Future,” “Anthem,” to name just a few utter classics.

PromoWest celebrating 25th anniversary
Friday,  October 30, 2009
By Jim Fischer, ThisWeekNews

The concert industry in Columbus is hopping, with no shortage of places to see local, regional and national acts and numerous local promoters.  But PromoWest Productions is the grandpappy of them all.  The company, founded by Scott Stienecker 25 years ago, owns and operates four venues (five, if you count the indoor and outdoor stages at Lifestyle Communities Pavilion) and books/promotes shows at other venues as well.  It officially started when Stienecker took over the Columbus Agora, renamed it the Newport Music Hall and brought Neil Young to town on Sept. 19, 1984.

One of PromoWest's projects with Belkin was the opening of Polaris Amphitheater in 1994.  The partnership later sold the venue, which later was renamed Germain Amphitheater and is now closed.  "Columbus was a secondary market until Polaris Amphitheater opened," Stienecker said.  Following the sale of the amphitheater, PW operated the Brewery District Pavilion for a few years until opening PromoWest Pavilion in 2001, now Lifestyle Communities Pavilion.  The venue is perhaps best-known, both locally and within the industry, as having an indoor-outdoor stage, allowing for 5,500-capacity outdoor shows seasonally and 2,200-capacity indoor shows year-round.

The company celebrates its 25th anniversary with a Bob Dylan show Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Lifestyle Communities Pavilion.

The Dave Matthews Band will perform June 22 in Huntington Park, the first major concert for the new Arena District stadium.

Columbus Alive is throwing the last outdoor music festival of the season this Saturday, Oct. 2 at South Campus Gateway.  It's called Rocktoberfest, and it's doubling as the release party for their latest Columbus music compilation CD.  The (FREE) album features 16 cool Columbus acts, eight of which will perform from 3-11 p.m. Saturday at the (FREE) concert.  PBR purchases will support Columbus Music Co-op.

Full coverage at Columbus Alive.
