Easily, my favorite architectural style - Art Deco

not pure "art deco" but I don't think many of the Hannaford buildings are pure anything...

it's says 'time capsule'

obligatory

to the maxxxxxxx

open to debate - maybe some art deco elements??

how many people knew that the Shillito building used to look like this and that the art deco facade was bolted on much later?
this is around back..

??

oh yeah..

did I miss any more downtown art deco?

Ditto edale, epitomy of art deco in Cinci is the Palm court.  Did get the Netherlands Plaza though.  Great thread.

Another "missed" style are the endless art-deco apartments throughout the city (Madisonville, Avondale, Oakley, West Price Hill, etc) and perhaps the more prominant ones near Eden Park (the pink one comes to mind, on Victory).

Otherwise, great eye, great thread!

Great thread!

How many people actually know that the Palm Court was orignally the lobby of the Netherland Plaza?  I would love to see an old pic of that.  There is a a great Art Deco building on Queen City east of St. Boniventure.  I think its a pumping station or something.  It's light up at night in orange lights at night which really adds to the character.

I vote to return the Shilito Building back to its original brick facade.  I'm not a big fan of its small/fortified looking windows right now.  It's hard to tell that there are gorgeous apartments inside.

Great shots!     I luv Indiana Limestone!!!!

Western Hills Viaduct (1932ish)and the Paddock Rd overpass (2000ish) are two good examples of Art Deco inclusion into bridge construction off I-75.

Very interesting about the Shilitos facade.

Does that say that the time capsule is to be opened on 12/2/2008?

And the original date is 1983?  Not much of a capsule...25 years, meh.  I have socks older...

The one corner of the Shillito building where the art deco facade stops is really weird. But I like it. I like the art deco and I like the original facade. And I like the juxtaposition.

Oh, tough call!  I like Art Deco A LOT, but I also love the original look of the Shillito building. It was gorgeous!  What a strange choice they made, to cover that up.  Question: When does a modification become part of a building's historic value?

Modifications are considered to be a part of a building's history...but in order to qualify for designation you must:

  • Be at least 50 years old
  • Meet one of the four required criteria:
  • Associated with a broad pattern of history
  • Associated with a significant person
  • Possess high artistic or architectural merit
  • Likely yield historic or prehistoric information

   3.  Possess each of seven integrities of preservation:
  • Location, Design, Setting, Materials, Workmanship, Feeling, Association

Don't confuse Art Deco with Art Moderne.   Sorry I'm an Art Moderne Snob

Moderne, a style that followed Art Deco, is closely related but lacks the intricate geometric Art Deco ornamentation. It is also known as streamlined architecture: banded windows, smooth stone surfaces, and stainless steel trim and railings are characteristic of this style. Union Terminal is the best example of Moderne in Cincinnati. There are few houses of this style.
