The neighborhood's urban density definitely helped make the rescue possible.

Im not so sure. And it took a long time to find them, not saying other neighborhoods would have been different.

This area is not that dense and shows a lot of abandonment. I dont think that Rocky River would have been any worse. If anything certain things might have been more out of the ordinary.

I was speaking more to Hts121's point about the front porches.  Similar density to Rocky River here, but not at all similar to a rural or exurban area.  And without a doubt, the neighborhood's economic problems worked against these ladies.  I just think the density helped.  Doesn't seem possible to save them if everyone's on a 2-acre lot.

I agree that rural would have obviously been worse. The typical suburb would probably have been better. Exurban could probably have been worse. It depends on the neighborhood.

But in the typical suburb, loads of neighbors aren't hanging out on their front porches at 6pm.  There was abandonment on this street, but there also was activity.... probably at most any hour.  Whether that activity is good activity or bad activity, the fact that it was there is what allowed Amanda to get someone's attention before Castro returned home.

I'd agree that boarded up windows would not have been overlooked without concern in the typical suburb, but that would have probably just led the perp to keep all of the girls in the basement or some other area where they wouldn't be seen or heard.

THis neighborhood is more closely related to the Clark-Fulton neighborhood.
About 3 years ago, I did a photo thread on C-F and drove up and down many of these peripheral streets and walked on both Clark Ave  and Fulton Rd.
Its shocking to me that I (more than likely) looked over at this house on Seymour.

Best thing about this whole story is obviously the outcome, and what happened can happen in any neighborhood. This kind of outcome is 1 in a thousand though.
About this neighborhood specifically... I dont think its dense at all. And one thing for sure...its chain-link fence heaven. Which Ive heard on UO is the epitome of trash. Not my words

EDIT to explain density comment: this northeast section of C-F was a very dense neighborhood at one time but because of tear-downs and abandonement, it currently isnt

We're having a party when the tree on the top of the Truman Bldg is taken down. Here's hoping we're soon raising our glasses in a toast to that "event."

Revised the subject of the thread based on the recent release from custody of the two Castro brothers.

I live maybe a mile from where Berry and her sister live. I told my sister the other day as we drove past Berry's street, but didn't go down it, that the media will imprison these girls again. If I were the girls, I ask for help to sneak out and flee to another city. Or, preferably to a secluded, rural area where they can enjoy being outside in the fresh air, hear birds sing, look at the sky anytime they want to and rediscover that there is still some beauty in this world.

I agree, I want to sneak them away to a park or something.

Amanda's family has said they want her to move to Tennessee.

Good. She deserves to have a quiet, uneventful remaining 60+ more years of life.

BTW, my #55 bus goes by the Justice Center. Last week, the media throng assembled in company tents and satellite trucks was mind-boggling. There had to have been 20 trucks and 200+ people there.

On the positive side, this sad event bring money to (hotel, tech, restaurant, misc travel, etc.) CTown.

I hope they stay, but understand if any or all of them leave Cleveland and never want to return.  I think Gina will stay due to the local support system she has.  The families of the other victims don't seem to be nearly as strong or united.  These women are local heroes and will always be embraced by our City.  If escaping the media is their concern, I don't know if they could find a place to live where the throng of reporters wouldn't follow them until they are seen in public and speak on the issue.

If they want it, I hope they're able to get standard-issue witness protection treatment, i.e. a brand new life set up for them.
