2nd Street Public Market, Dayton, Ohio - July 13, 2007

The 2nd Street Public Market is in a former railroad freight house, and is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. On Saturdays it's wall-to-wall people, but my schedule only worked out for a Friday photo excursion. Still, it picked up pretty well around lunchtime.

Vendors offer art, crafts, meat, produce, wines, plants, flowers and prepared meals.

Excellent photos! Why the trip back to town?

I wish they'd do more advertisting; I hadn't heard of the place until the Dayton Meet. The Oregon District gets a lot of exposure in the Middletown area, but I think my family would much more likely visit the unadvertised market.

Too bad we missed. I was heading out just as the lunchtime traffic was starting to build.

I should have stayed and had lunch; as often happens when my camera starts dragging me around, I didn't pay enough attention to hydration and nutrition. About the time Carriage Hill Farm closed I sort of crashed and burned, and I had to refuel and give myself some recovery time before I headed home. I cut short my over-ambitious plans for the day.

I still have a bunch of downtown photos to post.

Excellent photos! Why the trip back to town?

Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission has an option through the end of the year to buy a former New York Central freight yard that has a structurally-sound big brick freight house. They've been soliciting public input on uses for the land and building, and at one of the public workshops I pitched the idea of a public market. They're hosting charettes next week, and I hope to show some photos of what it could be.

When I told my brother of my plans, he told me about Carriage Hill Farm and said I should check it out. I'm glad I did; it was the high point of my visit.

Wow, for some reason I've never heard of that place before!  I wish I had known about it when I visited Dayton.
