Washington - So you think getting a driver's license is a hassle now? Just wait.

As the federal government inches closer to strict national standards for driver's licenses in an effort to keep them from would-be terrorists, critics warn that the new system will be more costly and cumbersome. Critics say it also will potentially expose more Americans to identity theft and government snooping by placing large amounts of personal information into government databases...

Anyone know whether Ohio's requirement that drivers have insurance reduced the number of uninsured motorists?  Seems like a possibility that higher standards for obtaining a drivers license could lead to more unlicensed drivers.

I got to visit traffic court recently and there were two younger people who had been in accidents and didn't have licenses or insurance.  They both lost the right to apply for a license for two years.  Not sure how that will stop them from driving without a license again.

Maybe I'm crazy, and maybe it's because I just renewed my license this January so I have some breathing time, but, it just doesn't seem that bad to me. I know most of my friends with children are getting passports for them because of extra security measures on planes; just seems to be what we are going to have to get used to. What do you think? I agree about possibly catching the uninsured...but then again, like you said, they might drive anyway.
