^Why would you be excoriated "for having an opinion".  That is exactly what this forum is for at long as you express it in the correct thread (which you did) and it is on topic (which it is).

Did you read the above posts?  I'm pretty sure I was called a cleveland.bomb poster b/c I had the temerity to criticize something.

One person said that. One person is not a forum. I think the discussion has been healthy -- hardly an excoriation. And I'm with you -- I don't care for the UH's cancer design design either. Perhaps I'm getting used to being disappointed with hospital facilities not interacting well with their city. Ironically, the Cleveland Clinic parking garage with the offices fronting Euclid at East 90th actually relates to the street better than most other buildings constructed in recent decades by the two hospital systems.

I don't mind the main building.  But the 4-story side building that connects to the rest of the hospital and the parking garage are just awful.  Have we learned nothing about covering buildings with sheets of metal?  We're tearing off all the metal downtown to restore historic facades, and they're just slapping metal on new buildings down here in UC.

Was driving by UH in University Circle and I have included a view of the new parking structure. In a previous thread I had seen the corner unfinished and workers today were completing the skin. In person the campus is looking quite nice.

Although not saying much, it is probably the best looking parking garage on the UH campus (looks almost like an actual office building) which was  necessary given its prominent location.

Yes, it does look like an office building. I didn't recognize it until I noticed the lower-left corner of the "unskinned" parking garage.

Looks kinda cool for a parking garage.  Much better than the garages Cleveland Clinic built on Carnegie.

I drove by that cancer building today, and the snow buildup at the bottom of that "swoop" completely covered the windows on the first floor, maybe higher.  The above photos were taken pre-storm, and in the first two you can see a bit of snow built up at the lower lip of the swoop.  Imagine 50x that much.  I doubt UH planned on hiring crews to shovel their windows.  But that's exactly what they're gonna need.

I have NEVER seen an exterior cladding of metal panels take so long on a building.  That top level of the facade has been waiting for those panels for well over a year.  Unbelievable.

Yeah, I don't know WTF is up with that.

And all the heat over this way is steam, at least on Case's side.  I would assume UH is the same :).

Steel just shot out of the ground today on the west lawn beside the main entrance ... very confused what this is.   Something temporary??

University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center opens for tours this weekend
Published: Thursday, April 14, 2011, 5:30 AM     Updated: Thursday, April 14, 2011, 10:07 AM
By Plain Dealer staff The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The public will be able to get a peek inside the University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The Center won't open officially until early June, but some radiation oncology patients will be treated in the new hospital starting later this month.

The 120-bed center -- with capacity for 30 more -- will be 10 stories. The $260 million project at UH's main campus on Euclid Avenue covers 375,000 square feet, tripling the space for cancer services currently at UH. Nine levels (including the lower level) will be dedicated to patient care.

A friend of mine -works for Marous- has been designing the window blinds for this "CER Center" lol. As you might imagine, it hasn't been easy because of the curvy-ness.

I like this building.

The company is taking a lot of pride in this one!

Thanks for the photos, MayDay!  From your visit, any sense how bad the glare/sun reflection will be from that shiny facade on pedestrians and drivers in the area?

Yeah, Straphanger, don't go to UC no more cuz you can't handle the glare!

The glare actually is pretty bad, depending on the time of year, and time of day.  sfbob, why shouldn't architects have to consider things like this?  In Vegas, one curved glass building is actually burning people.  I guess it's more important that it be iconic than that it doesn't burn people, huh?

I've heard some say that there's substantial glare on the western facade; I was there around 2:30pm so it wasn't an issue for me. That said... unless we're hearing stories of spontaneous combustion or daily pile-ups on Euclid, let's just leave it at that. :-)

Thanks, guys for the report.  I'm not big fan of the design for other reasons too (YMMV), but was curious if Mr Shiny there might also make things uncomfortable for passersby in our hot, bright summers.  Nothing a growing tree canopy can't handle though (unless it gets fried ;)).

Looks like the healing garden is still just dirt, but suppose it's a bit early in the season for planting.  I look forward to seeing that shape up.  I can't quite tell from the photos- has anyone noticed about how tall the garden wall along Euclid is on the sidewalk side?  Will the garden be easily visible from the sidewalk?

Rode by on my bike last night.  The new front entrance to UH is looking nice.  For whatever reason, the neon on the garage is showing up green in the picture, but it is actually blue.
