The opening of a cultural garden once captivated an international city. The parades, speeches and ethnic performers drew crowds of 100,000 to Rockefeller Park in the 1930s and 1940s.

Isn't the African-American one still trying to get funding?  In a city that's 51% black?!?!

There is funding for the African-American garden. There are organizational problems that are keeping it from going forward.

There is another garden that has broken ground (besides the Indian). I don't recall which nationality is sponsoring it.

A friend pointed out the irony of a larger-than-life statue of a man known for extreme modesty, but it's still pretty awesome. From today's PD.

Angelo Paolone, a worker with Shippers Highway Express Inc. holds the hand of a 13 foot bronze statue of Mahatma Ghandi as he and other worker place it on a base in the India section of the Rockefeller Gardens. It is to be unveiled in a ceremony Sunday.

The local Indian community really raised some cash for this. One of the members is a structural engineer. He designed the base for the statue. Supposedly, it could support something 5 tons heavier. Hey, whatever works..

Wow I haven't been to the cultural gardens in years.  What a wonderful gem!  Cities around the world would kill for such a great public space.

Wasn't sure where to post this. there isn't a thread just related to the gardens.
I've had this for little while and kept forgetting to post it.
It shows all of the current gardens and the boundaries for future ones too.

EDIT: Sorry if you read this with the oversized image. If somebody would like the full file, IM.

Why would they do just an African-American Garden? That would be like having a European Garden or an Asian Garden. How about the many African nations instead? It looks like they've got the space for them.

Well, African-American is generally regarded as an ethnic group, but that doesn't imply it's a "black" garden.  "Black" can be Kenyan, Domincan, Togoan, African-American, etc.  Perhaps the African groups of Cleveland can create their own gardens as well?

CDM, that was a great way to explain it.

African-American culture varies great from someone who might be West Indian or to be specific Jamerican.

I think this is great idea for a garden considering its location to Glenville and Forest Hills.
