SMU was a much bigger deal when they gave them the penalty - the old Texas-based leagues were disbanded because they were so corrupt. I've seen death penalty rumors for Miami on a couple different sites. That would make the next conference shake-up really interesting to say the least.

That was a fun opening weekend for college football.  No competition with the NFL meant an extended schedule of games from Thursday to Monday.  What was most memorable?

Friday's 50-48 upset win by Baylor over TCU?

Saturday night's big wins by big teams - LSU over Orgeon / Boise St. over Georgia?

Lightening delayed/shortened games (USF at ND / W. Mich. at Michigan) on Saturday and Marshall at WV on Sunday?

Or was it Monday's unveiling of Maryland's ugly new uniforms in their win over Miami?  I know I've been trying erase those unis from my memory!

^Frankly, I think you're forgetting the most exciting game of the weekend... Utah State @ Auburn.  The late comeback, while exciting for Auburn fans, was hard to watch because Utah State should have never lost that game.

The Miami @ Maryland game was fun to watch too.  And I really liked the Maryland uniforms!  I don't know why everyone gets so worked up about that stuff... it was fun and added a little something extra to an already exciting game.  I'm looking forward to the Michigan throwback uniforms for the ND game this weekend.  Should be an exciting Saturday night game that Michigan should win.

I didn't forget about the Utah State/Auburn game.  I saw it.  And while it was a great comeback for Auburn - the victory was so unimpressive that formerly #23 ranked Auburn got dropped out of the Top 25.

FWIW - I'm also looking forward to Michigan's throwback unis and the first ever night game at The Big House.

Lots of entertainment in Week 2.  Such as the following: (list not meant to be comprehensive - if something else caught your eye, please share)

- How about Michigan's spectacular comeback against Norte Dame?  At the first game in the Big House?  And with ND and UM wearing very stylish throwback uniforms?

- How about Alabama travelling to Happy Valley and making Penn State unhappy.

- How about the early season SEC shootout between the hedges?  SC downs GA 45-42.

- How about Auburn stopping Mississippi State at the goal line on the final play of the game to win 41-34?  Auburn goes 2-0 and retains their title of the luckiest college football team this year.
It's nice to be important.  But it's more important to be nice.

Conference shake-ups galore!!!

- First, Texas A&M announces it is leaving the Big 12 for the SEC.  Leaving the Big 12 - which had only 10 schools after Nebraska and Colorado left last year - with only 9 schools.

- Next, Syracuse and Pittsburgh announce they are leaving the Big East to join the ACC.  Which would bump the ACC from 12 to 14 teams.

- Then, Rutgers and UCONN announce they might also join the ACC.

- And even more.  Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State announce they may leave the Big 12(9) for the PAC 12 - which would become the PAC 16 presumably.

Confused?  Well, this may be the beginning of what was hinted at last year.  The formation of four football superconferences with 16 teams: SEC, ACC, PAC-16 and the Big Ten. (Although, the Big Ten has said they are satisfied with their current 12-school membership.)

And what might happen to the two conferences that are losing schools?  There is talk of the remaining Big East and Big 12 schools combining into a new conference.

I thought 'Cuse or Rutgers would have been good candidates for the B10.  But now I would guess, if we expand, it would be with WVa, Mizzo, and both Kansas schools.

Not to get off topic, but the new ACC, assuming all those schools do join, is going to be ridiculous basketball-wise

That's BS with the ACC.  The Big East was the best basketball conference last year.  As a Cincy alum this pisses me off.

Whats interesting now is that there are reports that Oklahoma says that they would stay in the big 12 if the commissioner is  fired and that there is equal revenue sharing.Missouri is being mentioned as the 2nd school to go to the sec along with texas a&m. West Virginia also apparently has been shot down by both the sec and acc for expansion. To make things even more complicated the mountain west commish has stated that he thinks tcu may stay in the conference and that there has been talks with conf. usa to merge and form a bcs super conference as well.

More conference carousel news:

- The Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State mass defection from the Big 12(9) for the PAC 12 didn't happen.  Apparently it failed because Texas was unwilling to share revenue from its Longhorn Network with the rest of the PAC 12.  And (as BUCKEYE54 alluded to) the Big 12 commissioner got fired.

- TCU is expected to join the Big 12(10) as its 10th member now instead of joining the Big East next year.

- Missouri is expected to leave the Big 12(9) - taking it back down to 9 members - to join the SEC as its 14th member.  Missouri stated that it wanted to join the Big Ten, but B1G was "not interested".

Non-conference-carousel / on-the-field / i.e. actual game news:

Q: Just how impressive is Wisconsin with transfer QB Russell Wilson?
A: 48-17 over Nebraska impressive!

From what I've heard - Wilson graduated from NC State but had one year of eligibility left.  NC State then released Wilson from his scholarship to play minor league baseball after he was drafted by the Colorado Rockies.  Then after the minor league season was finished, he transfered to Wisconsin to use his remaining year of eligibility.

Unusual situation - but I wondered too why he didn't have to sit out a year.

If Mizzou is not restricted geographically from entering the SEC, then neither should WVU or Cincy. (Not saying those two teams should be desirable to the SEC, but it's not like Mizzou has been a star lately, nor does it have a stellar media market.)

This Big East crap is ridiculous.

How about Rutgers destroying Pitt? Pitt took down USF last week, who was undefeated and ranked, and Rutgers is widely thought to be the worst team in the Big East. Except they're the only team 2-0 in the conference now! Not that there have been that many conference games, overall.

Next, let's hope WVU falls. Then UC will have a real shot at taking the conference!

Maybe not that interesting after all...

NCAA: No major violations for Auburn

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The NCAA said it found no major violations committed by Auburn regarding Cam Newton or other pay-for-play allegations and has concluded multiple investigations of the football program.

The NCAA released a statement Wednesday saying it has closed its 13-month investigation into Auburn's recruitment of the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, whose father shopped his services to another school for up to $180,000.

No one else has mentioned the last play of the Wisconsin-Michigan State game last night.

I'm calling that one for an ESPY even with the season barely halfway completed.

I also enjoyed the upset of Oklahoma by Texas Tech -- in Oklahoma!

I love me some  upsets.

That really was an amazing play.  The lucky bounce was good, but I really liked the fight by both the WR and the DBs trying to keep him out of the endzone.  It was a great clash to end the game.  Also, kudos to ESPN for having the camera (ground level, the one higher up got a little shaky as those MSU fans started going crazy) at the right angle to see that the ball did cross the plane.  It feels like too many times there is not a good angle for the replays, even when they have 12 cameras all around the stadium.

#1 LSU travelled to #2 Alabama for the latest "Game of the Century/Decade/Year/Week".  And it certainly lived up to the hype.  (If you really like field goals and turnovers.)

Well, it was a close game.  And it did go into OT - where LSU kicked a field goal to win 9-6.

The Cincy-Pitt game was pretty exciting. Cincy now has to lose twice to have a possibility of not winning the Big East.

Figures that we wouldn't crack the top 25, smh. The voters has something against the BIG 10, but onto that game from last night, WHAT A SNOOZEFEST!!! I can enjoy a good defensive smashed mouth game, but it was a good defensive game because both offenses were horrible :-D. They both do have great defenses tho, but Joe Bauserman could make Toledo look like a top 5 defense.

And their coach died in a plane crash...umm...bad day?

Frankly, it might have been appropriate to postpone the game.

The recap on ESPN is ridiculous. The first 30 seconds are about the coach and the moment of silence before the game, etc., then there's an abrupt transition from the somber tone to upbeat metal-guitar music and the regular recap. You have to feel for the host being thrust into such an awkward moment.

Having watched a good part of that game, I wouldn't mind seeing it.

Better than seeing Boise State make it by playing what mostly amounts to a Division I-AA schedule.   Fortunately, TCU spared us that.

Oklahoma and Oregon also upset, perhaps in part because Oregon had LeBron on the sidelines. :choke

It's definitely looking like an all SEC BCS championship game, and deservedly so.

An LSU/Alabama "championship game" looks even more likely now.  Unless someone thinks Arkansas might break that up?  Anyone?

I would've loved to see an Oklahoma/LSU title game.  But Baylor's RG3 (aka Robert Griffin III) prevented that (how great has he been?).  Didn't care as much about Oregon dropping out because there is the same objection to them being in the title vs. LSU as Alabama.

The NCAA/BCS argues that true playoffs aren't needed because "every week is a playoff" and "every game counts" in the regular season.  Fine.  But then you can't ask a team (LSU) that has beaten another team (Alabama) on their home field to play them again and call it a "national championship game".  Alabama had their shot at LSU and lost.  That - and the extreme boringness of the first LSU/Alabama game - is why I won't be watching any second LSU/Alabama game.

Although the bowl games are irrelevant - they do provide some pretty good entertainment.  A couple of great games from yesterday:

- Toledo won 42-41 over Air Force in the Military Bowl.  It looked like Air Force would force the game into overtime with an extra point with only 52 seconds left.  But instead Air Force faked the XP and tried for a 2-point conversion and the win.  Toledo stopped them for the win.

- Baylor, led by Heisman winner RG3, won a 67-56 shootout over Washington in the Alamo Bowl.
It's nice to be important.  But it's more important to be nice.
