BGSU students seeking to reverse arena support
By JC REINDL
BLADE STAFF WRITER

BOWLING GREEN - The student opposition movement to a new arena at Bowling Green State University has changed tactics and is now aiming to overturn the student government's resolution of support for the planned $36 million Stroh Center athletics and events venue.

at first i thought oh cool good eye c-dawg, everybody came to their senses about this hideous arena.

.....but then i read the article and my heart sunk:

"Many Stroh Center opponents take issue with the $60 per-semester fees that students would be charged beginning in 2011 when the arena is scheduled to be finished. The fees would last until the project's debt is paid off."

so it turns out they are just cheapskates! nobody has any issue at all with the new arena being a butt ugly tin shack.

^I think they're publicly saying "we're not for or against the arena" (you saw that in the video on the Blade site), but deep down, I have a feeling they're pissed about how small/crappy it will be too (waste of money). When you're trying to get political support, you want to get as many people as you can. You sometimes don't publicly say everything you feel because it might risk turning off potential supporters. They're probably not saying the arena is ugly/too small because they're afraid to, or it will lead to the inevitable "UT has better athletic facilities than BG."

But still, anything to stop the arena from being built is a good thing in my book. It is a waste of money and an unfair burden on the students. BG should only build an arena if they're ready to do it right, meaning 7,000-8,000 seats (seems about right in the MAC these days- look at UT's success), and actually put up a quality product that will be respected for generations. Stroh's falls way short. It's something you'd spend 36 million dollars on and regret the next day. If BG kids wanted to live in regret, they'd just go to Skybar and pick up a freshman.

your assumptions may or may not be correct, but the facts is all they said outright was they didn't want to pay the fee.

now i'd like for you to be right, because it would restore my good faith in the architectural taste of the bg students, but going on that article and the looks of the rest of the campus, i think thats hoping for too much don't you?

also, even though they are rivals in sports, it's much more likely that bgsu would compare itself to its ugly twin sister school kent state than it ever would to toledo's ut or tu or whatever-they-are-calling-it-this-year college.

^true, Kent and BG share the same history (teacher schools), and look more alike (way too much of that modernist sh!t).

At least BG has a more functional college town though. BG downtown/student neighborhoods > Kent downtown/student neighborhoods. Kent is a majority commuter school. BG should really be comparing themselves with Miami.

And I think in terms of MAC athletics these days where all the dominant programs have fallen, comparing any two programs is like comparing a Ford Contour with a Dodge Neon. You're getting there slow either way...

And honestly, Stroh's Center would be the Dodge Neon of MAC arenas.

WOW, NOT COOL!! :x BG is the only school in this state to have won the Frozen Four, and they've produced a lot of NHL players. They've also got an ice arena that holds 5,000 people (actually more than their basketball arena).

BOWLING GREEN - Two weeks before the 25th anniversary of Bowling Green State University's national hockey championship, a firestorm has erupted over the possibility the school is considering eliminating the sport

The university's spokesman said yesterday "no decisions about program cuts have been made," but that "everything is on the table."

Huntington donates former Sky building to BGSU
Business First of Columbus
Wednesday, May 27, 2009, 1:57pm EDT

A former operations center for Sky Financial Group Inc. is in the hands of Bowling Green State University after Huntington Bancshares Inc. donated the $1.5 million building to the school.  Officials from the northwest Ohio university and Columbus-based Huntington gathered Wednesday afternoon to announce the donation of a 35,000-square-foot building that formerly served as an operations center for Sky.  When Huntington bought the Bowling Green-based bank for $3.6 billion in 2007, it closed the center at 1851 N. Research Drive and cut its 100 employees.

BOWLING GREEN - The dorms at Bowling Green State University will get a complete overhaul to modernize them for today's students.

The university is planning a substantial 15-year program to renovate residence halls and build more, with the largest push in the next six to seven years, said Steven Krakoff, associate vice president of capital planning and design.

"Over time, most if not all of them will be upgraded," he said...

BGSU says mess means it's building for the future

BOWLING GREEN — When students return to Bowling Green State University for the first day of classes Monday, they'll be greeted by hundreds of construction workers, heavy equipment, and fenced-off building areas.  The university is in the largest building blitz in its history — about $200 million in projects are under way.  Under construction are:

• Two residence halls — South Central and Northwest residence halls — that together add 1,300 beds at a combined cost of nearly $66 million.  They are expected to be open by fall, 2011.

• The 700-seat McDonald dining center, which will cost about $10 million and will open in the fall, 2011.  A second dining center that will replace the Commons dining hall is expected to be built and completed by early 2012.

• The Wolfe Center for the Arts, a $41 million performance and academic building for theater, music, film, digital arts, design, sound, and dance that's to be finished by fall, 2011.

• The $36 million Stroh Center, a sports complex and arena for men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball, and gymnastics that will be ready to use in July.

The new residence halls look great. BG is on a building rampage right now.

The Stroh's Center looks worse in person than it does in renderings. It's a real trainwreck, may even become an attraction just because it's so nasty.

I was very impressed by the residence halls till I found the construction map and it reveals that they demo'd Rogers Hall to make room for the South Central Residence Hall.  That's where I lived so it has sentimental value to me.  But also kinda lame because those dorm rooms were enormous compared to nearly all other options on campus.

They were designed and originally used to house 4 people per room (double bunk beds).  My sister's father in law dormed there in the 60s and since they only brought clothes, a clock/radio and a lamp it wasn't that bad.

From the Bowling Green Sentinel-Tribune Daily Newspaper:

Stroh Center: Hitting the homestretch

The main court is ready to go with a giant BG Falcon logo painted right at center court.  The chairback seats around the court are installed.  The retractable bleacher seats which will surround the floor and include seating for students and the band will start being installed at the end of this month.  Rest rooms, concessions stands, locker rooms and coaches' offices are framed and work can be done to get them ready for everyday usage.

It all adds up to the construction of the Stroh Center being in the "homestretch," according to Jim Elsasser, the associate athletics director at Bowling Green State University.

What a waste of money and time.

The new campus buildings look good overall. They really highlight how awful the 60s architecture is.

Two new residence halls greeted students arriving at Bowling Green State University last month.  BGSU will celebrate the opening of Falcon Heights and Centennial Hall at 10 a.m. Wednesday (September 14) in the courtyard of Falcon Heights.

Falcon Heights, located on the corner of Merry Avenue and Thurstin Street, has the capacity to house nearly 650 upperclass students in single-room suites with semi-private bathrooms shared by up to four people.  The rooms feature in-unit air conditioning and heating, self-lofting beds and moveable furniture.
